Black History Month: Local CEO creates premier networking company
The Brief
February is Black History Month and we are celebrating people and organizations in our community making a difference.
A Philadelphia native who launched a networking company three years ago, focusing on connecting Black and Brown professionals is being highlighted.
PHILADELPHIA - Senzwa Ntshepe is the CEO of The Connect, Philadelphia's premier networking group for Black and Brown professionals.
The mission of The Connect is to create city ecosystems where professionals can thrive socially, professionally, and philanthropically. The organization helps Black professionals build community while also helping to facilitate access to career opportunities by bringing together people from diverse industries.
What they're saying
"The Connect is birthed off of need," said Ntshepe. "A lot of folks were leaving Philadelphia to seek better social and professional opportunities elsewhere. We really say that we like to connect folks to capital, conviction, and community. And community is really at the center of everything that we do."
"When Black and Brown folks have felt threatened or have felt uncomfortable, community is always what saved them," he continued.
"We strive to create a space where it feels like home," said Stephon Braithwaite-Martin, The Connect's Chief Growth Officer. "Where you're meeting strangers, but it feels like family. It is paramount that our Black folks are able to find communities they feel safe in. That we can be our own multifaceted selves."
Big picture view
The group achieves their mission through year-round events such as their Black Excellence Gala, engaging conversations, and Friday night's LikeMinded Black History Month Mixer.
"They know that people feel a little bit nervous," said Ashley Lyles, CEO of A+ Event Consulting. "I think they make it a point to make events very engaging and friendly and open and we always have fun."
What you can do
The Connect has expanded to Washington, D.C. and a chapter will soon launch in Memphis, Tennessee. It is free to become a member. You can find more information on The Connect's website, here.

Stadler unveils RS ZERO sustainable train in Czech Republic
Stadler has unveiled the RS ZERO, a train designed for zero-emission transport, at the Rail Business Days in Ostrava, Czech Republic. This fully decarbonised locomotive operates on both hydrogen and battery power and is expected to facilitate sustainable rail travel on Czech railways lacking electrification. With only 35% of the Czech rail network currently electrified, the RS ZERO offers a green alternative to the ageing diesel vehicles serving the remaining lines. The Czech Republic is the second country, following Germany, to witness the introduction of the RS ZERO. Stadler supervisory board chairman Peter Spuhler said: 'I truly believe that our RS ZERO can replace diesel vehicles, represents a compelling solution for modernising the fleet in the Czech Republic's non-electrified routes. 'The RS ZERO is capable of CO2-emission-free operation with exceptional versatility, functioning on both electrified and non-electrified rail tracks. I am very pleased to present this vehicle in Ostrava today.' The RS ZERO is the successor to the RS1 model and is designed with a fully decarbonised propulsion system suitable for non-electrified and partially electrified routes. It is available in single or double-car units, seating up to 165 passengers, and is ideal for regional services with lower traffic demands, offering both low-emission and emission-free hybrid operation. Furthermore, the RS ZERO boasts a range of up to 150km on a single battery charge and 800km using hydrogen propulsion system. Stadler Prague supervisory board chairman Zdeněk Majer said: 'The modernisation of rolling stock and railway lines is a key priority for both the Czech government and neighbouring countries. There is a clear need for sustainable solutions that increase financial efficiency and environmental protection. 'The RS ZERO embodies our commitment to the development of rail travel, providing comfort, efficiency and respect for nature - especially on non-electrified lines.' In related news, Stadler has secured a contract valued at approximately SFr350m ($419.3m) with A-Train, the operator of the Arlanda Express in Sweden. The deal includes the delivery of seven FLIRT trains and an option for an additional unit, along with a 15-year maintenance contract. A-Train plans to replace its fleet, which has been operational since 1999, by 2029. "Stadler unveils RS ZERO sustainable train in Czech Republic" was originally created and published by Railway Technology, a GlobalData owned brand. Rainbow PUSH accuses Target of backing away from commitment to Black community
CHICAGO (WGN) — Religious leaders with Rainbow PUSH protested outside a downtown Target store on Thursday, saying that corporate executives reneged on commitments to the Black community, which company spokespeople deny. Black leaders also demanded more hiring and advancement opportunities. For Rev. Jamal Bryant of Atlanta, Georgia, it's a lingering question about fairness. 'African Americans spend in the orbit of $12 million a day in Target stores around the country. So to just walk away from our community, we really felt betrayed,' Bryant said. Target latest company to roll back DEI programs Leading Thursday's protest on State Street in the city's Loop, Bryant, along with Rev. Jessie Jackson and members of his Rainbow Coalition, asked Target why the retailer seemingly had a change of heart. 'Under no pressure and no response to any protest, they offered themselves a $2 billion commitment to the Black community and Black entrepreneurs, and then after the inauguration of Donald Trump, walked away from it,' Bryant said. Organizers are pointing to glaring disparities, such as the presence of 26 Target stores on college campuses across the country, they say. But none of them are at Historically Black Colleges and Universities — HBCUs for short. 'We've asked them to partner with six HBCUs' business programs,' Bryant said. 'They've not responded to that.' But in a written statement to WGN-TV, Target spokespersons said: We have committed to invest $2 billion in Black owned businesses and brands, supported students at over 20 Historically Black Colleges in Universities, invested 100 million to Black lead community organizations and given scholarships to over 30,000 members of our team to advance their career.' Statement from Target Yet, Yusef Jackson, with his father Jesse Jackson, and other community leaders say they need to see action. 'Your word ought to mean nothing,' Yusef Jackson said. 'You can't expect us to have foot traffic in a store and not be able to sit at the table with you to make decisions.' Last month, Target announced that sales fell more than expected in the first quarter, and the retailer warned they will slip for all of 2025 year as its customers, worried over the impact of tariffs and the economy, pull back on spending.
