KOLKATA: An IT-sector employee, and his brother, were arrested by Baguiati cops for theft of items worth Rs 5 lakh from the former's girlfriend's residence at Deshabandhu Nagar in Baguiati.
Accused Shyamcharan Das reportedly took advantage of his girlfriend's business trip to Sikkim and gave the rented flat's keys to his brother Ramcharan, asking him to steal gold jewellery.
He directed his brother to the exact spots where the gold was kept in the flat that he often visited. Shyamcharan himself travelled to Sikkim to meet his girlfriend, ensuring he was not seen as a suspect.
By the time the trip was over and the theft was discovered on May 30, the woman lodged an FIR against the servants of the building.
However, cops checked CCTV footage and identified Shyamcharan's scooty at the crime scene. It was being used by Ramcharan. "On being questioned, Shyamcharan confessed to planning the crime," said an officer.
Shyamcharan borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from the victim and was under pressure to return the money. He planned to sell the jewellery to return the loan and pocket the rest. Shyamcharan and Ramcharan often visited the flat, and no one suspected their involvement.

The victim, who has been in a relationship with Shyamcharan for two years, is also from East Midnapore.

Shah to visit security camps, review anti-Naxal ops to Chhattisgarh

Shah will also lay foundation stones for a National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and a state forensic lab in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar on the first day of his visit (Sunday) Press Trust of India Raipur Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations in Chhattisgarh during his two-day trip to the state starting from June 22, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma said on Thursday. He will also lay foundation stones for a National Forensic Science University (NFSU) and a state forensic lab in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar on the first day of his visit (Sunday), Sharma told reporters here. The state government has allotted 40 acres of land for NFSU, which will be built by the Centre at a cost of around Rs 400 crore. The state forensic lab will come up adjacent to the NFSU campus on six to seven acres of land, said the Deputy CM, who holds the home portfolio. The next day (Monday), Shah will visit a camp of security forces (in Bastar region), he added. During the visit, Shah will chair a meeting in Raipur to review ongoing anti-Naxal operations and meet with family members of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girepunje, who died when a Maoist planted pressure IED exploded in Sukma district on June 9, Sharma added. Notably, anti-Naxalite operations have been intensified in Chhattisgarh since the BJP was elected to power in the 2023 assembly polls and more than 400 Maoist cadres, including senior functionaries, gunned down by security forces in separate encounters since January 2024. Shah has repeatedly declared that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to eradicate Naxalism by March 31, 2026. Security forces achieved a major success when they neutralised Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju (70), general secretary of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), in the Bastar region on May 21.

Kenyan police officers arraigned over shooting a civilian during protests

AP image NAIROBI: A court in Kenya on Thursday gave detectives 15 days to complete investigations of two police officers suspected of shooting and wounding a hawker during the latest street protests over the death of a blogger in custody. The officers were arraigned in court two days after the Tuesday shooting on a busy street and under the full glare of cameras. It triggered anger and fury over persistent complaints against police brutality. Tuesday's protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the central police station. Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing "false information" about a top police official on social media. Police attributed his death to him "hitting his head against the cell wall," but activists have questioned the cause of death. Protesters on Tuesday demanded the arrest of the police deputy inspector general, Eliud Langat, who had filed a defamation complaint against Ojwang. Langat said Monday he had stepped aside and would cooperate with investigators. The two officers at the central police station were arrested last week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The officers will remain in custody until July 3. During their court appearance, they concealed their faces with masks, sparking complaints from activists. Kenya has a history of police brutality, and President William Ruto previously vowed to end it, along with extrajudicial killings. Last year, several activists and protesters were abducted and killed by Kenyan police during protests against tax hikes. The demonstrations led to calls for Ruto's removal.

800 Grams Gold, Rs 80,000 Cash Collected From Air India Wreckage. What Happens To It Now?

Last Updated: If no legal heir claims the gold or other belongings, they are held as unclaimed property for seven years; after that, ownership transfers to the government as per existing rules In the aftermath of the Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, authorities have recovered several valuable and personal items from the wreckage—including 70 tolas of gold jewellery (approximately 800 grams), Rs 80,000 in cash, a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, and multiple passports. The recovered belongings, now secured by the government, have sparked questions over their rightful ownership, especially with the gold jewellery valued in lakhs of rupees. According to Indian law, valuable items recovered from accident sites can be dealt with in several ways. For now, the gold is secured by the government until the rightful claimant is identified. If no claimant comes forward, these valuables will be deposited in the government treasury. The recovered gold, cash, and other items are in the custody of the police or relevant government officials, such as the district administration. These items are stored in government treasuries or lockers for safekeeping. Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi announced on June 15, 2025, that all recovered items would be identified and handed over to the closest relatives of the deceased. The government's priority is to identify the rightful claimants. How Will The Claimants Be Identified? The identification of the heirs involves DNA matching and documentary verification of the passengers killed in the crash. Given that 241 passengers and more than 28 people on the ground perished in the accident, DNA testing is necessary to identify the bodies. Ownership of the gold and other items will also be determined through this process. Who Are Legal Heirs? Under Indian law, the deceased's property, including gold and cash, is transferred to their legal heirs. This process is governed by the Hindu Succession Act for Hindus, Muslim Personal Law for Muslims, and the Indian Succession Act 1925 for Christians. What If No Claimant Is Found If no legal heir claims the gold or other items, they are categorised as unclaimed property. Such property remains under government possession for a specified period, usually seven years. If no claimant is found within this period, the property becomes the government's. In cases where passengers had insured their luggage, identified heirs will also receive compensation. How Many Passengers Have Been Identified So Far Media reports indicate that 162 deceased individuals have been identified through DNA testing since the crash. The process of returning recovered items to their families has commenced. Keeping such items without reporting can be considered an offence under Section 403 (criminal breach of trust) or Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
