Delhi Airport weather disruption: Over 300 flights delayed amid heavy rain, IMD issues yellow alert

Over 300 flights were delayed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions, though no diversions were reported. The national capital experienced heavy rainfall throughout the day.IGIA, the largest airport in India, manages around 1,300 flight movements daily. According to available data on Flightradar24.com, more than 300 flights faced delays and some were cancelled, with the average departure delay being around 17 minutes.In a morning update on X, IndiGo stated there was heavy rainfall in Delhi, leading to temporary disruptions in flight schedules. "If you're travelling today, please be aware of potential delays and allow additional time for your journey, especially with traffic moving slower than usual. We're monitoring the situation closely and will get you airborne as soon as possible," the airline said.Air India also posted in the morning that rain 'may impact flight operations to and from Delhi on Saturday.'Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms in parts of north, west, south, southeast, and central Delhi. The alert was later downgraded to yellow, advising people to remain cautious.
In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Saturday, Delhi's primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 78.7 mm of rain, Pragati Maidan 100 mm, Lodhi Road 80 mm, Pusa 69 mm, and Palam 31.8 mm, according to the IMD.[With PTI inputs]

Panaji: The southwest monsoon faltered in Goa during the first ten days of Aug 2025, with rainfall far below seasonal expectations and most of the state's 13 rain gauge stations recording only scant precipitation. 'We have only 21 days of Aug left, with no convective systems forming over the Arabian Sea or the Bay of Bengal.' Kumar attributed the weak monsoon to several unfavourable meteorological factors, including weak low-level jet streams — with wind speeds as low as 10 knots — limiting the moisture transported from the surrounding seas. Additionally, dry northwesterly winds from the arid regions of Saudi Arabia and Africa dominated the lower atmosphere up to 2,500 metres, further suppressing the moisture inflow. 'The monsoon trough and the offshore trough have not been positioned favourably, and no depressions have formed in the Arabian Sea or the Bay of Bengal this month,' Kumar said. 'These conditions have collectively hindered the development of active monsoon phases over Goa.' Seasonal totals remain uneven, with Dharbandora receiving the most at 2,795.4mm, and Mormugao trailing with only 1,385.7mm. So far, the state has recorded a total of 2,054.2mm (81 inches) of seasonal total rainfall since June 1. With the state still in the peak monsoon window, Kumar cautioned that a continued shortfall could stress water resources and disrupt crop cycles, particularly for paddy farmers dependent on consistent rainfall. The IMD also warned of squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50kmph gusting to 60kmph along and off the south Maharashtra-Goa coast on Aug 13 and 14. Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into that area during this period.

Mercury rises day after rain; more showers likely today
New Delhi: A day after the city received heavy rainfall, the day temperature rose on Sunday as rain activity paused. The city may receive very light to light rain on Monday and Tuesday, with a possibility of one or two light-to-moderate spells on Wednesday and Thursday. It was seven degrees Celsius higher than Saturday's maximum temperature when intense rain brought down the mercury. The minimum temperature on Sunday stood at 23.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 67% and 100%. "There was no significant change in minimum temperatures, but maximum temperatures rose markedly by 6-7 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours over Delhi. Very light to light rain or thundershowers are likely during the next five days in the city," said a Met official. IMD has predicted that there is a possibility of very light to light rain on Monday and Tuesday, but the city may see a few spells of light to moderate showers on Wednesday and Thursday. The maximum temperature is expected to stay between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. "On Wednesday, one or two spells of light to moderate rain/thundershowers are likely, with a higher probability during evening or night hours. On Thursday, there are chances of a few spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers, with a higher probability during morning hours," said an official. Delhi's air quality continued to stay in the 'satisfactory' category with an AQI of 76.

Air India flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi diverted to Chennai
New Delhi [India], August 11 (ANI): An Air India flight operating from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi was diverted to Chennai on Sunday following a suspected technical issue and weather conditions along the route, the airline to Flightradar24, the Air India flight AI2455 was scheduled to depart Thiruvananthapuram at 7:15 pm but took off at 8:17 pm. The flight, originally expected to arrive in Delhi at 10:45 pm, instead landed safely in India spokesperson in a statement said, 'The flight crew of AI2455 operating from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi on August 10 made a precautionary diversion to Chennai due to a suspected technical issue and given the weather conditions en route. The flight landed safely in Chennai, where the aircraft will undergo the necessary checks."'We regret the inconvenience caused to the affected passengers. Our colleagues on the ground in Chennai are extending support to the passengers to minimise it and are making alternative arrangements to fly the passengers to their respective destinations at the earliest," an Air India spokesperson airline emphasised that passenger and crew safety remains its top priority.
