Published on: Sat, Apr 26, 2025 Text Size: Battle King with winning AB Stable. Kota Kinabalu: Race 1 (Initiation) over 1,100m sandtrack at Tambalang tracks this Sunday sees a heathy crop of promoted runners, Puteri Santubong III, Dynamite and Jelly Jelly with declared ambition to challenge incumbents. Of the three, Puteri Santubong III is highly regarded and looks sharp going into the race. Horse owner Chin Kui Sang is highly respected in the circuit, and always prepares his horses well. Resilient Battle King is tipped to win with Shahbandar Hero and Mountain Ace (Ex. Kante) in the mix. Race 4 (Class D) over 1,100m sandtrack is suited for Apin Apin Prince for a long overdue win. He should find Class D competition less intense. His lightning quick gate reaction and front leading style should lead him to glory. Hunter Champ is consistent-type and has capability to chase down Apin Apin Prince. Gold Dream and Kokorriko should be noticed. With leading jockey Firdaus in control, in-form Diva can surprise with an upset. Race 5 (Class D) over 1,100m sandtrack will be too close to call with as many as four runners legitimately fighting for top spot. Aqis is favourite with the slightest of edge followed closely by the well-trained Magic Blinks. Wawa's impressive runs of two second placings and a third placing qualify her as a strong contender. Go Tommy Go should be tracked even as he moves up to tougher Class D competition. Over at Selangor Tur Club this Sunday, Royal Sabah Turf Club's (RSTC) two representatives, Sabah Win and Vittoria Perfetta are scheduled to run Race 2 and Race 10 respectively. Sabah Win's excellent record of two consecutive second positions puts him as favourite. His career thus far at the Capital has been satisfactory and local racing fans will be rooting for Sabah Win for further success. He faces proven competitors in Kick, Ganbatte and Wan Legacy. Vittoria Perfetta in Race 10 over 1300m enters this race with modest expectation. A minor placing will be deemed assignment accomplished. Smoke and Mirrors is favourite with King's Gambit and Delilah rounding up the selections. This Sunday in Hong Kong sees the running of the Chairman's Sprint Prize (Race 5 - International Group 1) with international runners and jockeys participating. Ka Ying Rising, HK's sprint king undefeated with a sensational record of 11 wins since February 2024 is the horse to beat. Going after Ka Ying is Japanese horse Satono Reve. Satono Reve with jockey 'magic man' Moreira astride can pose a threat to Ka Ying Rising. Also in contention are Helios Express and Lucky Sweynesse. Race 7 Champions' Mile (International Group 1) over 1600m should see local favourite Voyage Bubble continuing his dominance over his usual nemesis in Galaxy Patch and My Wish. Mr Brightside and Royal Patronage, both Australian champions in their own rights, should be closely watched, in particular Mr Brightside. Race 8 is showpiece race - Queen Elizabeth II Cup (International Group 1) over 2,000m. This race will likely witness the emergence of a champion Japanese horse. Liberty Island (Japan) is installed as early favourite with Prognosis also from Japan, closely behind. Tastiera, another Japanese stayer, should be pencilled in but Goliath from France under famed Belgian jockey C Soumillon has every intention to gatecrash the Japanese party. Racing fans can look forward to a bumper weekend of on-course and off-course racing. Local races, Hong Kong, Australia, Selangor and Perak races are teleast 'live' at Tambalang Racecourse and RSTC's Off-Course centres in Tanjung Aru and Keningau. Ohtani leads tributes as Japan's ‘Mr. Pro Baseball' dies at 89

LOS Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani led the tributes to Japanese baseball legend Shigeo Nagashima following his death on Tuesday aged 89. Known as 'Mr. Pro Baseball', Nagashima starred for Japan's most popular team, the Yomiuri Giants, winning nine straight Japan Series titles from 1965 to 1973. He formed a lethal partnership with Sadaharu Oh, who holds the world record for hitting the most home runs, and the pair are credited with cementing baseball's status as Japan's favourite sport. Their batting exploits captivated a Japanese public enjoying new economic prosperity out of the ruins of World War II, with families tuning in to watch games on black and white televisions. Nagashima's outsized personality and easy charisma made him a popular public figure and symbol of a confident new Japan. He hit a dramatic walk-off home run to seal a win for the Giants in the first professional game ever attended by Japan's emperor in 1959. 'May your soul rest in peace,' Ohtani wrote on Instagram to his 9.5 million followers, along with a picture of himself with Nagashima. Oh also paid tribute, telling reporters that he was 'really shocked' to learn of his former team-mate's death. 'I'm really disappointed that Mr. Nagashima, who shines brightly in the history of Japanese baseball, has departed after a long bout with illness,' the 85-year-old Oh was quoted as saying by the Kyodo news agency. 'He taught me a lot of things. I'm grateful to have been able to play with him.' Nagashima retired in 1974 after a 17-year playing career during which he won the Central League batting title six times and was home run king twice. He played in 2,186 games and hit 444 home runs. He also had two stints as the Giants' manager, winning two Japan Series titles over 15 seasons. Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary said Nagashima was 'a sunny person'. 'He left so many brilliant records in the world of professional baseball for many years and gave bright dreams and hopes to society as a national star,' he said.

Pearly-Thinaah face tougher Indonesia Open path after redraw

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 4 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah may have avoided a showdown with the world's top pair, but the redraw at the Indonesia Open has handed them an even tougher route. The Malaysian pair were initially slated to meet Japanese world No. 1 Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida — who hold a dominant 13-1 head-to-head record — in the semi-finals. However, following the Japanese duo's withdrawal, Pearly-Thinaah have been bumped from the third to the fourth quarter of the women's doubles draw under the "seedings withdrawal movement" rule, and their path has become trickier. The Malaysians now face Taiwan's world No. 15 Sheng Shu Yun-Yu Chien Hui in the first round, with a likely second-round clash against Indonesia's world No. 20 Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti. Lanny-Fadia stunned Pearly-Thinaah in the opening round of the Malaysia Open in January, although the Malaysians exacted revenge at last month's Thailand Open — both matches going the distance. Should they make it through, Pearly-Thinaah could face a quarter-final test of endurance against world No. 6 and Singapore Open runners-up, Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi of Japan. Meanwhile, in the men's singles, world No. 25 Leong Jun Hao won't be getting an easy ride either despite the withdrawal of China's world No. 27 Lei Lan Xi. Lan Xi, who pulled out due to injury, was replaced by Indonesian world No. 42 Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo — a dangerous opponent playing on home soil. Last week, Jun Hao advanced to the Singapore Open quarter-finals after receiving a walkover from Lan Xi in the first round. This time, however, he'll have to earn it the hard way. Jun Hao holds a 2-1 head-to-head record over Chico and will look to carry his momentum into this opening-round clash in Jakarta.

Retired great Hakuho to quit sumo over stable row: reports

RETIRED sumo great Hakuho will quit the ancient Japanese sport following a row over the forced closure of his wrestling stable for physical abuse, reports said Monday. The Mongolian-born Hakuho won a record 45 tournaments before retiring in 2021 to coach wrestlers, but his stable was indefinitely shuttered in April last year when one of his proteges was accused of bullying. Hakuho was also handed an embarrassing demotion for failing to control the behaviour of Hokuseiho, who allegedly punched his lower-ranked stablemates and stole money from them. The future of Hakuho's stable is still unclear more than a year later, leading the 40-year-old to tender his resignation to the Japan Sumo Association, reports said. The reports said his resignation was accepted at an extraordinary board meeting in Tokyo. When contacted by AFP, the Japan Sumo Association declined to comment. Hakuho, who is currently in Mongolia according to posts he has made on social media, is expected to hold a news conference next week. Born Munkhbat Davaajargal, Hakuho moved to Japan aged 15 and made his sumo debut in 2001. He won his first top-division title in 2006 and went on to fight at the sport's highest rank of yokozuna more times than anyone in history.
