Iraqi Parliament advances Civil Defense Law amendment
Shafaq News – Baghdad The Iraqi Parliament completed the second reading of the first amendment to the Civil Defense Law, an Iraqi lawmaker reported on Monday. Speaking to Shafaq News, Kareem Alawi, head of the parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, explained that the amendment grants Civil Defense directors in Baghdad and other provinces broader powers, enabling faster decisions in the field to protect citizens. 'The amendment also supports increased financial allocations for the Civil Defense Directorate and expands its scope to match urgent tasks,' he noted, adding that the parliamentary leadership is working to schedule the vote as soon as possible. Earlier, the Parliament's media department released the agenda for Tuesday's fourth session of the second legislative term. It includes votes on several bills, as well as first and second readings of others, but excludes a vote on the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Law. Efforts to pass the PMF Law have sparked internal debate and drawn international attention, particularly from the United States, which views the legislation as potentially strengthening Iranian influence and empowering armed groups outside state control. The US also regards the Law as a potential threat to Iraq's sovereignty and an obstacle to establishing a unified national army.

Iraq denies reports of covert US operations
Shafaq News – Al-Anbar Reports of unauthorized US troop movements in Al-Anbar's western desert are unfounded, Iraqi officials revealed on Monday, noting that all foreign movements are under control. 'There is no evidence of unauthorized movements or operations beyond the scope of official security coordination,' stated Saeed Ghazi al-Mohammadi, head of the provincial security committee, in comments to Shafaq News, further stressing that all activity inside foreign military installations, including Ain al-Assad, remains under close surveillance by Iraqi security forces. He noted that no breaches or irregular movements had been recorded in recent weeks, urging media outlets to verify information before publication and refrain from spreading rumors that could undermine stability in the province. Approximately 2,500 US troops remain in Iraq under an agreement with the Iraqi government. Their mission, as part of the Global Coalition against ISIS, is to advise and assist Iraqi forces, support counterterrorism operations, and help build local military capacity. US personnel are stationed at several bases across the country, including Ain al-Assad in al-Anbar, as well as facilities in Erbil and Baghdad.

SDF repels attack in Deir Hafer, accuses Damascus of escalation
Shafaq News – Deir Hafer The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Monday that they had repelled an early morning assault on their positions in al-Imam village, southeast of Aleppo, blaming pro-government factions for a 'deliberate escalation' threatening regional stability. According to a statement, armed groups affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government launched a coordinated attack at 3:00 a.m., targeting four SDF-held positions in the Deir Hafer area. The SDF forces engaged the attackers immediately, and clashes continued for 20 minutes without interruption. Calling the attack a 'repeated aggression,' the group warned that its fighters are 'more prepared than ever to exercise their legitimate right to respond with full force.' The confrontation followed an earlier escalation on Saturday, when SDF units shelled Syrian army-held areas in the Manbij countryside, northeast of Aleppo. According to Syria's Ministry of Defense, the strike wounded four soldiers and three civilians, prompting the army to launch retaliatory attacks targeting the source of the fire. The SDF rejected the government's version of events, insisting its strikes were in self-defense. The group claimed it was responding to overnight shelling by 'uncontrolled elements' within Syrian army ranks, who allegedly launched more than ten artillery shells into residential neighborhoods in Deir Hafer.
