Toulouse edge out Bordeaux in extra time to secure third straight French Top 14 rugby crown
PARIS – Toulouse claimed their third consecutive Top 14 title and a record-extending 24th French championship by beating Bordeaux Begles 39-33 after extra time in a dramatic final on Saturday.
Thomas Ramos kicked two penalties in the last five minutes for Toulouse after Bordeaux's Maxime Lucu had converted a penalty on the hooter to take the game into extra time at 33-33.
A try from Anthony Jelonch and a brace from Jack Willis put champions Toulouse in control of the match but Damian Penaud, Matthieu Jalibert and Guido Petti also crossed the tryline to keep Bordeaux in touch.
Petti and Pierre Bochaton were shown yellow cards and Toulouse, missing talisman Antoine Dupont, won their 11th consecutive final, a year after routing Bordeaux Begles 59-3 in the title match.
'Emotions are unbelievable. The scenario is crazy', Jelonch said on France TV. 'We were exhausted after 80 minutes, we played 100. When you see all the players' emotions, this one is the most beautiful of all.'
Bordeaux's Jalibert said he was proud of his side.
'We were strong but the coin didn't fall on our side', the fly-half said on France TV. 'I think we can keep our heads up. I'm proud of the team because after last year's disappointment, we wanted to come back here.'
After Toulouse and Bordeaux traded penalties, the holders capitalised on Petti's yellow card to score the opening try when Jelonch found a gap in the defence.
Bordeaux responded quickly, however, when Penaud latched on to Maxime Lucu's kick to touch down.
Willis restored Toulouse's lead with a powerful finish from a driving maul just before half-time and the English flanker crossed for a second try after Jalibert had dotted down under the posts for Bordeaux.
Lock Petti kept the game alive when he went over from a wide position for Bordeaux before Lucu sent the game into extra time.
France internationals Romain Ntamack and Louis Bielle-Biarrey did not reappear after half-time, the former due to a shoulder injury while the latter was playing his first match after suffering a concussion. REUTERS

Financial details were not disclosed, but British media reported that the 25-year-old France-born Morocco international was signed for a fee of around 25 million pounds ($33.66 million). Adli joins Ben Gannon-Doak, Adrien Truffert, Dorde Petrovic and Bafode Diakite as new additions at Bournemouth. The club lost Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Milos Kerkez to Liverpool and Illia Zabarnyi to Paris St Germain in the close season. Adli started his senior career at French side Toulouse before moving to Leverkusen in 2021. He registered 23 goals and 25 assists in 143 appearances for the German club, helping them to an undefeated domestic league and Cup double in the 2023-24 season. "Amine is a proven winner and someone that will be a real asset to our squad," Bournemouth's President of Football Operations Tiago Pinto said in a statement. "He's someone that has competed at the highest level and his ambition is very much aligned with ours." Adli will link up with Bournemouth ahead of Saturday's Premier League home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season, lost their opener against reigning Premier League champions Liverpool 4-2 last week. REUTERS

Olympic champion Imane Khelif denies retirement from boxing

ALGIERS – Algerian boxer and Olympic champion Imane Khelif on Aug 20 denied claims made by her former manager that she was putting her career on hold. The 26-year-old was at the centre of a gender row at last summer's Paris Games where she won gold in the women's 66kg category. 'I would like to make it clear to the public that the reports of my retirement from boxing are false,' Khelif wrote on her Facebook page. She accused her former manager, Nasser Yesfah, of 'betraying (her) trust and (her) country with his false and malicious statements'. 'This person no longer represents me in any way,' she added. 'I have never announced my retirement from boxing. I remain committed to my sporting career, I train regularly and I maintain my physical condition between Algeria and Qatar in preparation for upcoming events.' French newspaper Nice Matin earlier on Aug 20 cited quotes from her former manager saying that she had hung up her gloves, without specifying whether it was for good. Top stories Swipe. Select. Marseille's Adrien Rabiot, Jonathan Rowe up for sale after ‘extremely violent' bust-up: club president

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Marseille's Adrien Rabiot's contract expires at the end of this season but he has now been put up for sale. MARSEILLE – Marseille president Pablo Longoria revealed on Wednesday that the French giants had decided to place star player Adrien Rabiot and English winger Jonathan Rowe on the transfer list as the result of an 'extremely violent' dressing room bust-up. 'What happened was extremely serious and extremely violent, something I've never encountered before,' Longoria told AFP in an interview. 'We had to take a decision because what happened went way beyond what is acceptable in a football club, as it would be in any organisation.' The incident happened after Friday's 1-0 defeat away to Rennes in their opening match of the French Ligue 1 season, a game which Marseille lost to a stoppage-time goal after playing for an hour with an extra man. Marseille had called the players' behaviour 'unacceptable' in a brief club statement published on Tuesday. 'I wasn't in the dressing room but the staff who were told me it was incredible, violent, aggressive and went beyond any limits,' added 39-year-old Spaniard Longoria, who has been Marseille president since 2021. The incident is a huge setback for the 1993 Champions League winners, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for Europe's elite club competition. Top stories Swipe. Select. 'Roberto de Zerbi has been coaching for 13 years, (sporting director) Medhi Benatia has been in top-level football for 22 years. I started out in professional football 20 years ago,' Longoria added. 'I think we all have enough experience to say we have never seen anything like it in a dressing room... Even in the worst punch-ups there are rules. Not in this case.' England Under-21 international winger Rowe spent last season on loan at Marseille from Norwich City and that deal was turned into a permanent transfer in the summer. The 30-year-old Rabiot, who has 53 caps for France, joined the club at the beginning of last season as a free agent after leaving Juventus. He had an outstanding first campaign at the Velodrome but Marseille have not succeeded in persuading the former PSG midfielder to extend a contract which will expire at the end of this season. However, Longoria insisted the decision to put Rabiot up for sale was in no way related to his contractual situation. 'The decision was very clear. It protects the club as an institution and it protects our season going forward. It is not negotiable for me to be president of a club where there are no rules,' he added. 'Honestly as a club we are the victims in this situation. A fight like this is unheard of in the world of football.' AFP
