The Longhorns face a major test right away. Their Aug. 30 opener at defending champion and third-ranked Ohio State is a rematch of last season's College Football Playoff semifinal, a 28-14 Buckeyes win in the Cotton Bowl.

The Buckeyes received 11 first-place votes from the panel of 65 media members who cover college football. No. 4 Clemson got four first-place votes and No. 5 Georgia got one.

Notre Dame, Oregon (which got the final first-place vote), Alabama, LSU, and Miami round out the top 10.
The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the preseason Top 25, most ever by a conference and one more than a year ago. The SEC has four teams in the top 10 for the second straight year.
The Big Ten, which has won the last two national championships, has two of the top three teams for the third straight year and six in the Top 25 for the third year in a row.
Four Big 12 teams are ranked, with defending conference champion Arizona State the highest at No. 11. The Atlantic Coast Conference has three, led by Clemson.

With Arch Manning now the undisputed starting quarterback, Texas will try to become the 12th team to start and finish No. 1 since the AP preseason poll debuted in 1950. The last team to do it was Alabama in 2017.
The Longhorns have been on an upward trajectory since they were 5-7 in 2021, Steve Sarkisian's first season. They have won 25 of their last 30 games and reached two straight CFP semifinals. Last year, they were ranked No. 1 four of five weeks from mid-September to mid-October, and they reached the SEC championship game in their first season in the conference.
'But this is a new year, new faces, new team, and obviously expectations are high for our program,' Sarkisian said at SEC media days. 'I'm not naive to that. I don't put my head in the sand, and expectations are very high. But I also say we're the University of Texas, and the standard is the standard here, and that's competing for championships year in and year out.'
Twelve Texas players were taken in the NFL Draft, including three first-round picks, but elite recruiting and additions from the transfer portal should alleviate concerns about losses on the offensive line and at receiver. The defense brings back plenty of talent.
Still, Texas received just 38.5 percent of the first-place votes (25 of 65), the smallest share for a No. 1 team in the preseason poll since Georgia got 33.9 percent (22 of 65) in 2008.
The Longhorns have ended a season No. 1 in the AP poll three times (1963, 1969, 2005) but until now had never started a season higher than No. 2 (1962, 1965, 1970, 2005, 2009).

The second-ranked Nittany Lions are not only 6 points from being No. 1, they are 75 points ahead of the Buckeyes in what might be considered a slight to the national champs.
Penn State will have Drew Allar back under center for what many consider a light schedule ahead of a late September visit from Oregon before a Nov. 1 showdown at Ohio State.
The Buckeyes, in the preseason top five for the ninth straight year and 12th of the last 13, will have a new look with only five starters back on offense and three on defense.
'This team has its own identity,' coach Ryan Day said. 'It wants to have its own identity, but it also wants to be the first Ohio State team to win back-to-back national championships.'
The opener against Texas will give the Buckeyes a good measure of themselves. Julian Sayin or Lincoln Kienholz will be the third new starting quarterback in three years. Whoever gets the job will throw to one of the nation's top players in Jeremiah Smith.
Day will also have another chance to figure out archrival and preseason No. 14 Michigan, which has beaten the Buckeyes four straight years.

Steelers among top landing spots for quarterback from legendary NFL family

Steelers among top landing spots for quarterback from legendary NFL family originally appeared on The Sporting News The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely be back in the quarterback market in 2026, as Aaron Rodgers is likely to retire after the 2025 campaign. Though Pittsburgh could opt to hand the keys over to Will Howard as the quarterback of the future, NFL Spin Zone's Joshua Watt believes the Steelers could target Texas signal-caller Arch Manning in the 2026 NFL Draft to be their hopeful franchise quarterback. The Steelers have been a quarterback away from being a great team for many years. Arch would join a roster that has a good mix of veterans and youth, with the offense being fairly young. Arch could step in with stability at coach, and enough talent to support him early on. If Arch were selected here, he could almost instantly elevate the team's chance for playoff success. Manning is set to be the Longhorns' full-time starting quarterback in 2025 after sitting behind Quinn Ewers for two seasons. The 21-year-old did start a few games last year, tossing nine touchdowns to two interceptions with a 67.8% completion rate. Manning also added 108 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. The New Orleans native is expected to post a phenomenal 2025 campaign and be in contention for the Heisman Trophy. If Manning does so, the redshirt sophomore will be in contention for the top quarterback in the 2026 draft. Pittsburgh would be a dream landing spot for Manning in the NFL, as he would be placed in a fantastic situation with an experienced and respected head coach in Mike Tomlin. Manning would also bring some much-needed excitement to the quarterback position in Steel City due to his mobility, something the franchise has lacked in recent years. Though Manning could be the prized player in the 2026 draft, his grandfather, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning, doesn't expect his grandson to declare for the draft next year. "Arch isn't going to do that. He'll be at Texas," Archie Manning said of Arch's 2026 draft plans. Staying all four years in college is a Manning tradition, as Eli and Peyton Manning both stayed all four seasons at their respective universities and ended up being legendary quarterbacks in the NFL. Arch Manning could follow in his uncle's footsteps, but he could also declare early with a stellar 2025 season and be a draft target for the quarterback-needy Steelers. NIL policy now in place to allow West Virginia prep athletes to earn money

MORGANTOWN — According to a policy set by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (SSAC) and approved by the state Board of Education, high school and middle school athletes in the state can begin to profit from Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) deals without losing their eligibility. The policy, which became public on Aug. 8, now joins West Virginia with at least 40 other states to allow prep athletes to earn NIL money. SSAC executive director Wayne Ryan did not respond to a message for comment. In approving the policy, athletes in the state are now free to have their name or image tied to a company for the purpose of advertisements or commercials for monetary gain as well as earn money through things such as charging for an autograph without the fear of losing their amateur status or eligibility. The policy does set some guidelines, beginning with athletes being prohibited from making any such endorsements while wearing an official school athletic uniform, jersey or logo. They can't make any references about the school they are enrolled in or any other SSAC member school. The policy also prohibits anyone 'employed by a member school, including coaches and administrators,' from being involved in the student-athlete's use of their NIL. Athletes are also blocked from promoting certain types of businesses and products, including casinos and any form of gambling, adult entertainment services, alcohol, tobacco and nicotine-related products, cannabis, prescription drugs, weapons and firearms. Athletic directors at Morgantown High, University High, Trinity and Clay-Battelle were reached for reaction, but all refused to comment. A provision in the policy makes it illegal for an athlete to be recruited from one high school to another with an NIL promise. 'No one associated with or acting at the direction of a member school, such as booster clubs, alumni or collectives, may use the promise of NIL opportunities to entice student athletes to transfer or attend their school,' the policy states. The NCAA first approved NIL for college athletes in 2021, and those deals have grown into millions of dollars for some athletes. Texas quarterback Arch Manning is believed to have the most expensive NIL deal, currently worth $6.8 million, according to a report from Sports Illustrated.

Alabama names Ty Simpson starting quarterback: Reports

Alabama has named Ty Simpson its starting quarterback, according to multiple reports. Simpson, a redshirt junior, was in a competition with redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and five-star true freshman Keelon Russell, who possesses plenty of promise. Though the decision became official on Monday, things have been headed this way for a while. During a press conference at the end of the spring, Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said, 'if we're playing a football game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start. And he earned that.' Advertisement So, Simpson has been viewed as the leader in the clubhouse for a few months. He backed up Jalen Milroe, who left for the NFL, for the past two seasons. Simpson has attempted just 50 passes during his career, so he's a bit of an unknown. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer clearly believes in him because he did not dip into the transfer portal to add a quarterback this offseason. There is some skepticism within the SEC, though. 'I don't think he's going to be in the upper tier of the league,' an SEC assistant told The Athletic this summer when asked about where Simpson stands among SEC quarterbacks. Simpson ranked 47th among 136 FBS starting quarterbacks in The Athletic's College Football 2025 quarterback tiers. He will be supported with a strong play caller in Grubb, a great receiver group led by star sophomore Ryan Williams, and a strong offensive line. So there's a strong possibility for Simpson to outplay that ranking. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
