Huge push for four-day work week to become reality for all Aussies
It will advocate for workplaces to take on the 100:80:100 model, which means workers would retain 100 per cent of their pay, with 80 per cent of their current hours, as long as they can maintain 100 per cent of their productivity and output. ACTU president Michele O'Neil said it's time to start exploring other ways of working.
'A fair go in the age of AI should be about lifting everyone's living standards instead of just boosting corporate profits and executive bonuses," she said.

Dozens of Aussie companies have already adopted the four-day work week and discovered huge positive results.
But, the concept so far has largely been confined to white collar and office-type roles.
It can be much harder to expand the approach into other sectors that depend on certain working hours, shift types, and workload.To remedy this issue, the ACTU will push for businesses that cannot adopt a four-day work week to give workers more rostered days off and annual leave days.
Regardless of which approach is taken, the union wants to ensure that pay and conditions, including penalty rates, overtime and minimum staffing levels, wouldn't be affected.
'Shorter working hours are good for both workers and employers. They deliver improved productivity and allow working people to live happier, healthier and more balanced lives," O'Neil said.
'Unions want all Australians to benefit from higher productivity – not just those with money and power."
What are the benefits of a four-day work week?
Fundraising platform Raisely jumped on this bandwagon back in 2022, and there's been a noticeable shift ever since.
Jordan Maitland, the company's chief customer officer, told Yahoo Finance they adopted the 100:80:100 model and praised artificial intelligence (AI) for helping staff reduce their workload.
'Life is busy and with AI we're able to get so much more done, which is almost at the expense of your people and you're almost getting too much done in five days that people are easily burning out,' she said.
'With all the technology and better ways of working, reward your people for that and let them have that day off and come back more energised."
To ensure staff could adhere to the shorter week, Maitland said they had to cut down on certain project work and had less time for learning and development.
But this meant they focused more on their 'core' jobs.
There was a 10.1 per cent improvement in productivity, and staff reported their work-life balance had gone up by nearly 18 per cent.
This has largely been the case for many businesses who took the 100:80:100 approach.
The ACTU pointed to a study published in Nature Human Behaviour that showed how a four-day work week "boosts performance, reduces burnout and improves employee health and retention".
That conclusion came after examining nearly 2,900 staff across 141 organisations in six countries after they took on the new-age work style.
Swinburne University also found in a separate study that productivity lifted in 70 per cent of the firms that adopted the four-day work week.
A poll of more than 2,500 Yahoo Finance readers found 90 per cent would prefer a four-day work week with the same pay.
Why is there a productivity roundtable happening?
The productivity roundtable was convened to examine how Australia could lift itself out of its current performance.
According to Treasury, productivity growth in the 2010s was the lowest in 60 years.
There are fears if this trend continued, it could have major implications for wages, living standards, and the overall resilience of the Australian economy.
Back in 2022, Treasury downgraded its long-run annual labour productivity growth assumption from 1.5 to 1.2 per cent.
While that might not sound too terrible, the 2023 Intergenerational Report revealed that a decline from 1.2 per cent to 0.9 per cent growth per year would reduce "per capita real income by more than $10,000 per person" over 40 years.
As a result, experts are convening to give the government their two cents on how to avoid this from happening in Australia.

Jobs figures to help RBA understand labour conditions
Australia's jobless rate could edge lower for July after a surprise jump a month earlier wrong-footed economists. Market expectations are for the unemployment rate to fall back to 4.2 per cent, when the Australian Bureau of Statistics releases its latest labour force survey. After the unexpected June figures economists noted the higher-than-anticipated rise was partly because of a sub-sample with a higher than average unemployment rate being rotated into the survey. So a modest reversal in Thursday's print should not be over interpreted as a sign the labour market is becoming tighter. Indeed, Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock noted various indicators suggest conditions in the labour market had eased in recent months. "There's some sense in which the labour market is easing. There are some indicators that we think suggest that things are still a little bit on the tight side," she told reporters after the central bank cut interest rates by 25 basis points on Tuesday. "If we can maintain where we are I don't think that's a bad thing." Deloitte Access Economics partner David Rumbens expects employment growth to ease through 2025 before stabilising, as public spending decelerates and overseas migration trends downward. Despite the resilience of the labour market since the pandemic, it was being undermined by poor productivity growth, he said in Deloitte's quarterly employment forecasts report. The fall in productivity since March 2022 had cost Australia about $150 billion in forgone economic activity per year, he estimated. Mr Rumbens urged the government to target high-impact, long-term reforms in its upcoming economic roundtable, including an overhaul of the tax system and reduced regulation, to help get productivity moving again. One regulatory change identified by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission on Wednesday could mean $8.7 billion in extra investment and an additional 35,000 homes built by institutional investors over the next five years. The Property Council backed ASIC's review of RG 97 - a regulation that required investors like super funds to disclose stamp duty when reporting fees involved in housing investments. It results in housing investments appearing more expensive than they really are, which penalises super funds for backing long-term housing supply projects, said Property Council chief executive Mike Zorbas. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said it had the potential to be a really important change. "It's a good example of where working together, we can identify regulation which is not serving its intended purpose, we can work with the regulators to act on some of that regulation where it's appropriate to do so, and we can get a good outcome," he said.

Auditor: California could save $225 million a year by letting state employees work remote
Gov. Gavin Newsom appears to have arbitrarily ordered workers back to the office without using specific rationale such as data on worker productivity, according to a newly released report from the California state auditor's office. The audit, which state legislators requested in May 2024 after the governor first ordered workers back to the office two days per week after they had been sent to work remotely during the COVID-19 lockdown, found that Newsom's office failed to gather important information about departments' office space needs and costs and did not use any data about state workers' productivity to justify its in-office mandate. Earlier this year, Newsom signed a new executive order that upped the required in-office days from two to four, but he relented in a series of contracts his administration signed with public employee unions. State Auditor Grant Parks concluded that California could save as much as $225 million per year and reduce its office space by nearly a third if it sticks to having employees in the office two days a week and working remotely three days a week. The governor's office also ignored survey findings from its own oversight agency, the Department of General Services, which had collected estimates from departments on how much office space they would need to bring workers back more often. 'In general, we determined that a one‑size-fits-all approach to telework is counter to state policy and may limit opportunities for significant cost savings,' Parks wrote. Supporters of work-from-home cheered the report as further vindication for their claims that Newsom's return-to-office mandates were capricious, politically motivated decisions rather than a true effort to increase worker productivity. Union leaders say flexible hybrid work policies can simultaneously save the state money and help achieve ambitious climate and emissions goals by reducing commuter traffic. 'This audit confirms what has been apparent for some time: Flexible telework benefits taxpayers, state government, and state employees,' said Ted Toppin, executive director of the Professional Engineers in California Government, a union representing state engineers, in a statement Tuesday. The audit recommended that state lawmakers require departments to identify positions that can successfully telework three days a week and offer such an option. It also instructed the state to develop guidance for departments to evaluate the effectiveness of their telework programs. Tara Gallegos, a spokesperson for Newsom, said in a statement that the governor's office 'respectfully disagrees' with the auditor's findings, which were based on 'hypothetical theories and incomplete information.'
