New York hit by Canada wildfire smoke, advisory issued over outdoor activities
Smoke from Canadian wildfires started making air quality worse in the eastern U.S. on Wednesday as several Midwestern states battled conditions deemed unhealthy by the federal government. The fires have forced thousands of Canadians to flee their homes and sent smoke as far as Europe. Parts of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York had areas of moderate air quality concern, and officials advised sensitive people to consider reducing outdoor activity.
In the U.S., smoke lingered on the skylines of cities from Kansas City to Minneapolis, and a swath of the region had unhealthy air quality on Wednesday, according to an Environmental Protection Agency map.
Iowa issued a statewide air quality alert through early Thursday, urging residents to limit certain outdoor activities and warning of possible health effects due to the thick smoke. Wisconsin officials made similar suggestions as the smoke drifted southeast across the state.

UK hubs for exploited migrant carers are of little help
A major UK initiative to match thousands of exploited migrant care workers with employers has helped less than 4% find jobs, according to a Freedom of Information request, casting doubt on the government's efforts curb the industry's reliance on new employees brought in from abroad. More than 28,000 migrant care workers whose visas were tied to their employer had to be referred to government job-finding 'hubs' between May 2024 and April 2025, according data released by the Home Office in response to an FOI from charity the Work Rights Centre. That was after they lost the job they were supposed to fill when UK Visas and Immigration officers discovered more than 470 employers were exploiting staff and revoked their licenses to sponsor overseas workers. But just 941 of those so-called 'displaced' migrant staff signposted by UKVI for support, or 3.4%, reported finding alternative employment. The small proportion who've been helped calls into question the government's plan to bring down job vacancies in social care by utilizing the pool of displaced workers, after it banned recruitment of overseas social care staff last month in an effort to reduce immigration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Crossout 2.0: Supercharged Crossout Play Now Undo 'After Covid, England desperately needed more care workers, and thousands of people from around the world answered that call in good faith,' said Dora-Olivia Vicol, chief executive of the Work Rights Centre. 'But instead of jobs they got scams, and instead of justice they got a referral to a program that simply doesn't work as intended.' (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) She urged the government to 'rethink their approach' to migrant care workers by fully reforming the Health and Care Worker Visa so it isn't dependent on employer sponsorship. Live Events You Might Also Like: A UK industry is still able to hire foreign workers under visa clampdown The Home Office has previously said 10,000 of the 40,000 who were displaced had found alternative work. A spokesman said the FOI figures 'do not provide a complete picture and workers were initially under no obligation to report their employment outcomes back to their regional partnership.' 'Over 900 workers have been directly matched into new employment thanks to the international recruitment fund and thousands more are being supported through our regional partnerships with CV writing, interview techniques and signposting,' the spokesman said. 'Since April employers wanting to recruit migrant care workers need to first consider recruiting from the pool of displaced workers - getting them back to work, into fulfilling careers and boosting productivity.' The Health and Care Worker Visa route was introduced by Boris Johnson's government in 2020, as the number of vacancies in the social care sector — which looks after the elderly, sick and disabled — soared due to Covid-19, Brexit and an aging population. Employers were given a fast-track route to recruit staff from abroad by applying for licenses from the Home Office to sponsor workers. But few checks were done on the businesses who became licensed to be sponsors. Bloomberg found evidence of businesses charging overseas workers tens of thousands of pounds for the opportunity to come to the UK, while some paid their workers too little, overworked them or gave them no hours at all. You Might Also Like: UK tightens student visa rules: Shorter stays, stricter checks, fewer perks The migrants couldn't quit their jobs, and in many cases were too afraid to report their employer, since their right to stay in the UK was tied to their continued employment with that business. But UKVI began investigating and revoked at least 471 employers' sponsorship licenses. That meant around 40,000 migrant staff employed by those businesses could no longer work, and were left looking for an alternative employer. This pool of workers was one reason that Prime Minister Keir Starmer felt able to announce last month plans to ban British care businesses from recruiting overseas workers. Under pressure from the growing popularity of Nigel Farage's anti-migrant Reform UK party, Starmer has been looking for ways to reduce net migration into the country — almost 700,000 people have entered the UK on Health and Care Worker Visas over the last five years. But matching those people with jobs is proving to be harder than expected. Emails sent out to displaced workers urging them to visit their local recruitment hub have in many cases gone unanswered, according to one government source. Many are thought to have gone into so-called 'black market' work such as prostitution in order to make a living, according to another government official. In other cases, employers have rejected workers applying through the hubs because their English language isn't satisfactory, or they fail other requirements. You Might Also Like: Indian students look beyond the 'Big 4' for study-abroad dreams 'We're hearing a lot of moans about the hubs,' said Jane Townsend, chief executive of the Homecare Association which represents UK home care providers. Some businesses looking for workers said it had taken months to speak to anyone at the hubs, she said. 'What we're hearing from lots of people is that they're not replying to emails. There doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency — and of course the clock ticks for the displaced workers, they've got 60 days to find another job, otherwise they get deported.'

Dinosaurs had cancer 70 million years ago, new study offers clues for cancer treatment
Dinosaurs, the colossal rulers of prehistoric Earth, were not immune to the ailments that still plague modern animals, including cancer. In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have confirmed that a duck-billed dinosaur that lived 70 million years ago suffered from a benign tumour. The fossilised remains of Telmatosaurus Transsylvanicus, found in present-day Romania, contained evidence of a jaw tumour known as ameloblastoma. The condition, still seen in humans today, offers a rare and remarkable link between ancient and modern biology. This finding opens new doors for studying the evolution of diseases and their relevance to human health. Fossil evidence of cancer in dinosaurs Researchers studying the fossil of Telmatosaurus transsylvanicus used high-resolution imaging to identify the presence of ameloblastoma, a benign tumour typically affecting the jaw. While fossilised evidence of disease has been found before, this discovery provides the clearest and most scientifically verified case of cancer in dinosaurs to date. A link between dinosaurs and humans by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The fact that the tumour resembles those found in humans is especially significant. Scientists believe this connection between species separated by millions of years could reveal crucial insights about how cancer has evolved. It suggests that certain diseases have long biological histories, rooted deep in evolutionary time. New methods unlock ancient secrets Teams from Imperial College London and Anglia Ruskin University used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the fossil. They discovered structures resembling red blood cells and preserved proteins, which is remarkable for a 70-million-year-old specimen. Unlike DNA, which degrades over time, proteins can survive and offer new paths for studying ancient life. What dinosaurs can teach us about cancer Understanding how large-bodied, long-lived animals like dinosaurs managed diseases could help researchers develop new cancer treatments. Scientists believe that ancient species may have evolved unique cancer-suppression mechanisms, which could inspire future approaches in human medicine. Preserving fossils for future discoveries The study also highlights the importance of fossil conservation. As molecular science continues to evolve, ancient remains could hold answers to medical questions of the future. "We need to ensure these specimens are preserved for ongoing research," said study co-author Justin Stebbing. A new frontier in medicine and palaeontology This discovery bridges the gap between palaeontology and modern medical science, showing that studying ancient life isn't just about the past. It may help shape the future of disease understanding and treatment. As more fossils are studied with advanced techniques, scientists hope to uncover even more about the hidden health histories of Earth's oldest inhabitants.

Feeling of Loneliness Saturn imparts lessons through solitude. A strong Saturn can enable you to appreciate your own company and cultivate emotional resilience, whereas a weak or troubled Saturn may give you a sense of lonliness. This is especially evident during transit phases such as Sadhe Sati or Shani Dhaiya, when individuals might feel emotionally distanced from friends, family, or partners, leading to profound anxiety stemming from feelings of abandonment and loneliness. Karma and Lessons In Vedic astrology, Saturn is commonly known as the "Lord of Karma." Its placement in an individual's birth chart is thought to signify that they have important karmic lessons to learn during this lifetime. These lessons often entail confronting challenges, hardships, and restrictions that are intended to promote spiritual growth and personal development. Limitations Saturn is linked to limitations, restrictions, and responsibilities. When Saturn's influence is strong in a person's life, they may experience a sense of being weighed down by various obligations, including family duties, work responsibilities, or societal pressures. These constraints can lead to feelings of heaviness and confinement. Mental Stress When positioned in crucial mental houses (such as the 1st, 4th, or 5th), or when it influences the Moon (representing the mind) or Mercury (symbolizing intellect and psychology), individuals frequently encounter mental burdens. Their thoughts may become serious, inflexible, and prone to worry. The individual might obsess over outcomes, past mistakes, or future uncertainties, resulting in persistent mental strain. Saturn's Connection to the Mind The Moon represents the mind, emotions, and tranquility and when Saturn comes in conjunction with Moon in a natal chart (particularly in the 1st, 4th, 5th, or 12th houses) that creates problems related to the Mind. This might bring the feeling of sadness, no one support these people during their tough time which creates emotional trauma and detachments. Moon and Saturn creates chronic mental diseases such as depression and anxiety disorders. These people often become introvert and emotionally numb sometimes. Shani Sadhe Sadi or Shani Dhaiya This is the time, when Shani rules the life of an individual. During Sadhe Sati (the 7.5-year phase when Saturn moves through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from your natal Moon) and Shani Dhaiya (the 2.5-year phase when Saturn transits the 4th or 8th house from the Moon) then people experience ups and downs in life. This time period bring emotional challenges, financial problems, health issues and also if it comes in the house of Mercury or transit with mercury then it might create psychological issues also. As we all know that Saturn is the planet of Karma and justice so it gives the results according to your past deeds. Indeed, Shani (Saturn) can induce anxiety, particularly when it is weak, afflicted, or poorly positioned. Its influence generates mental strain, fear of failure, and emotional detachment, especially when one resists taking on life's responsibilities. Though Saturn is always misunderstood as it gives unnecessary problems in one's life but you should never forget that it is a planet of Karma and justice so whatever you receive is the result of your past Karma.
