Dodgers Announce Mookie Betts Out of Lineup Ahead of Yankees Game
Dodgers Announce Mookie Betts Out of Lineup Ahead of Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees square off for a three-game series at Chavez Ravine beginning Friday, in what promises to be one of the most talent-loaded in-season matchups of the year. Advertisement The Yankees, who were embarrassed by the Dodgers in five games in the Fall Classic last year, clearly have had this series marked on their calendar as their first opportunity to exact revenge on their new rivals. With the Yankees' acquisitions of Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt, this series promised the first ever game in MLB history with both teams having three former MVPs. Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez (37), shortstop Mookie Betts (50) and first baseman Freddie Freeman (5). Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images However, ahead of the Dodgers' long awaited Friday against the Yankees, they announced a surprising omission from their lineup. Infielder and 2018 MVP Mookie Betts was absent from the Dodgers' starting lineup, per Sonja Chen. Advertisement The rest of the lineup rounded out as expected, with Shohei Ohtani leading it off, and Teoscar Hernandez, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman representing the bulk of the order. Friday's game would be just the second game out of 55 games this season that Betts would miss. Betts has appeared in every game since March 29, when he was sidelined by a stomach virus that caused him to lose 20 pounds. The reason for Betts' absence remains unknown, but it could simply be gamesmanship on the part of Dave Roberts, as Betts has hit to a .641 OPS and .204 average against lefties. Potential Cy Young candidate lefty Max Fried takes the mound for the Yankees in Hollywood tonight. Yankees' Aaron Boone Sends Jasson Dominguez Update After Luke Weaver Injury
Yankees' Aaron Boone Sends Jasson Dominguez Update After Luke Weaver Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After losing two out of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend in what will be their only World Series rematch this season, the New York Yankees now turn to their series against the Cleveland Guardians. Advertisement Injuries have been piling up this season, with Jazz Chisholm Jr and Fernando Cruz returning from weeks-long stints on the injured list, but closer Luke Weaver replacing them after straining his hamstring during warm-ups. One concerning story that fans were monitoring over the weekend was former top prospect Jasson Dominguez, who was nursing a thumb contusion over the weekend. The report prior to Tuesday was that Dominguez would be evaluated in New York, which was ample cause for concern in the organization. Advertisement However, manager Aaron Boone on Tuesday sent a very positive update on the young outfielder. The injury could be a "couple days thing," according to the skipper, with Boone saying Dominguez has seemingly "gotten better every day." Dominguez, in his first full season in New York, is starting to show flashes of the kind of hype he got throughout the minor leagues, with a .247 batting average and .766 OPS. Dominguez turned in a tremendous performance May 9 against the Athletics, hitting three home runs and driving in seven runs which singlehandedly boosted his slugging percentage from .365 to .463. Dominguez added to his hot month with his first career walk-off home run against the Texas Rangers on May 21 to clinch a series win. Advertisement The news that Dominguez will likely return in no time is welcome for a team that has already lost Gerrit Cole for the season and remains without Luis Gil, Jake Cousins, Marcus Stroman and JT Brubaker.
