Wildfires Erupt across Syrian Coast, Pose Threat to New Government
The fires had destroyed 'hundreds of thousands of trees' covering an area estimated at 10,000 hectares (38.6 square miles), Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh posted on X.

UN teams have joined Syrian firefighters who are battling fires for a fourth day with strong winds, rugged terrain and the danger of landmines hampering the efforts.
The blazes of the fire in the northwestern province of Latakia 'have forced hundreds of families to flee their homes, while vast tracts of agricultural land and vital infrastructure have been destroyed,' UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria Adam Abdelmoula said. Crucially, Turkey and Jordan have supported Syrian civil defense teams with firefighting teams providing support from the air with helicopters.

This catastrophe comes in a crucial time as Syria's new government strives to build a new recovered economy after over a decade of civil war and crippling sanctions that isolated Syria from the international community.

Trump Announces 30% Tariffs Against EU, Mexico to begin August 1
President Donald Trump on Saturday announced he's levying tariffs of 30% against the European Union and Mexico. Trump announced the tariffs on two of the United States' biggest trade partners in letters posted to his social media account. In his letter to Mexico's leader, Trump acknowledged that the country has been helpful in stemming the flow of undocumented migrants and fentanyl into the United States. But he said the country has not done enough to stop North America from turning into a 'Narco-Trafficking Playground.' 'Mexico has been helping me secure the border, BUT, what Mexico has done, is not enough,' Trump added, The AP news reported. Trump in his letter to the European Union said that the US trade deficit was a national security threat. 'We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with The European Union, and we have concluded we must move away from these long-term, large, and persistent, Trade Deficits, engendered by your Tariff, and Non-Tariff, Policies, and Trade Barriers,' Trump wrote in the letter to the EU. 'Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal.' Trump is in the midst of an announcement blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike, a bedrock of his 2024 campaign that he said would set the foundation for reviving a US economy that he claims has been ripped off by other nations for decades. With the reciprocal tariffs, Trump is effectively blowing up the rules governing world trade. For decades, the United States and most other countries abided by tariff rates set through a series of complex negotiations known as the Uruguay round. Countries could set their own tariffs – but under the 'most favored nation'' approach, they couldn't charge one country more than they charged another. With Saturday's letters, Trump has now issued tariff conditions on 24 countries and the 27-member European Union. The European Union's chief trade negotiator said earlier this week that a trade deal to avert higher tariffs on European goods imported to the US could be reached 'even in the coming days.' Maroš Šefčovič told EU lawmakers in Strasbourg, France on Wednesday that the EU had been spared the increased tariffs contained in the letters Trump sent on Monday, and that an extension of talks would provide 'additional space to reach a satisfactory conclusion.' The bloc collectively sells more to the US than any other country. US goods imports from the EU topped $553 billion in 2022, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative. Trump on April 2 proposed a 20% tariff for EU goods and then threatened to raise that to 50% after negotiations did not move as fast as he would have liked. Sefcovic did not mention any tariff figures. The higher tariffs as well as any EU retaliation had been suspended as the two sides negotiate. However the base rate of 10% for most trade partners as well as higher rates of 25% on autos and 50% on steel and aluminum had gone into effect. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former Congressional Budget Office director and president of the center-right American Action Forum, said the letters were evidence that serious trade talks were not taking place over the past three months. He stressed that nations were instead talking amongst themselves about how to minimize their own exposure to the US economy and Trump. 'They're spending time talking to each other about what the future is going to look like, and we're left out,' Holtz-Eakin said. He added that Trump was using the letters to demand attention, but, 'In the end, these are letters to other countries about taxes he's going to levy on his citizens.'

60 MPs Urge UK to Immediately Recognize Palestinian State
Approximately 60 British Labour MPs have urged the UK government to immediately recognize the Palestinian state and halt what they labeled as 'ethnic cleansing' in Gaza, according to The Guardian. Rafah Plan A group of centrist and left-wing MPs write a letter this week to the Foreign Secretary David Lammy asking him to act immediately to stop Israel's reported plan to establish a so-called 'humanitarian city' of tents in the ruins of Rafah, in southern Gaza. 'By not recognizing [Palestine] as a state, we undermine our own policy of a two-state solution and set an expectation that the status quo can continue and see the effective erasure and annexation of Palestinian territory,' the letter said. The MPs also described the plan as 'ethnic cleansing' warning that such a move means the forcible transfer of civilians and the erasure of Palestinian presence as well. 'It is with great urgency and concern that we are writing to you regarding the Israeli Defense Minister's announcement on Monday of his plans to forcibly transfer all Palestinian civilians in Gaza to a camp in the ruined city of Rafah without allowing them to leave,' the letter added. Five Measures In this context, the 59 MPs introduced five different measures for the government to stop the Israeli government from carrying out its Rafah plan. Organized by Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East group, the letter requests ministers to take five different measures to ensure the following: Recognizing the state of Palestine Supporting the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) Securing the release of hostages Pressing for the full and unhindered resumption of humanitarian aid Fully reviewing and placing restrictions on trade with and financial support of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Iran Willing to Resume Nuclear Talks with US under Guarantees of No Attacks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that Tehran would restart nuclear talks with the US if there were assurances of no more attacks against Iran, according to The Associated Press. Araqchi noted that Iran has always been ready and will be ready in the future for talks about its nuclear program. However, 'assurance should be provided that in case of a resumption of talks, the trend will not lead to war.' Israel Iran Conflict On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. The US became directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran on June 22 after launching airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. Araqchi said that if the US and others wish to resume nuclear talks with Iran, 'first of all, there should be a firm guarantee that such actions will not be repeated.' In this context, he clarified that attacking Iran's nuclear facilities has made it more difficult and complicated to achieve a diplomatic solution based on negotiations. Deteriorated Relations between Tehran and IAEA Iranian relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have deteriorated since the United States and Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities in June in order to eliminate Iran's nuclear program. Moreover, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has signed a law suspending cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog, amid growing tensions. Then, Araqchi stated that Tehran intends to collaborate with the UN nuclear watchdog, but this cooperation would take on new form and would be guided and managed through the Supreme National Security Council, according to Reuters. He also noted that that access to Iranian Nuclear sites bombed by Israel and the US posed security and safety issues. According to the new law, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should have approval by the Supreme National Security Council for any future inspection of Iran's nuclear sites. In a speech to Tehran-based foreign diplomats, Araqchi emphasized Iran's need to resume uranium enrichment on its soil.
