Inside the Gaza row splitting the British Jewish board

When Phil Rosenberg became president of Britain's largest Jewish representative body, he vowed to become a 'unifying figure' and stressed that he was 'not frightened' by the community's diverse views on difficult issues, including Israel.
Under his leadership, he pledged that the Board of Deputies of British Jews would proudly echo every corner of the community as it grappled with the fallout of the October 7 attacks.
'I'm not scared to speak to people on my right or on my left, because I often find, genuinely, you learn something from people, if you listen,' he told Jewish News after his appointment last May.

Israeli PM confirms arms distribution to Gaza clans

BY Libyan Express Jun 06, 2025 - 15:19 Updated: Jun 06, 2025 - 15:19 Members of the Abu Shabab gang in Gaza, seen in a recent video posted by the group on Facebook (Screengrab) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged providing weapons to local clans in Gaza as part of efforts to counter Hamas operations in the territory. The disclosure came following statements by opposition politician Avigdor Lieberman, who serves as a former Defense Minister. Lieberman described the recipients as 'criminal gangs' and expressed concerns about the potential future use of these weapons against Israeli interests, citing the absence of monitoring mechanisms. Netanyahu addressed the matter in a video posted to his X social media account. He stated that the decision was made based on recommendations from security officials and characterised it as beneficial for Israeli military personnel safety. 'On the advice of security officials, we activated clans in Gaza that oppose Hamas,' Netanyahu said. 'What's wrong with that? It's only a good thing. It only saves the lives of IDF soldiers.' Israeli state broadcaster Kan TV reported that unnamed officials confirmed the initiative received Netanyahu's approval and was coordinated with the Shin Bet internal security agency. These sources indicated the program proceeded without Security Cabinet authorisation. The program involves distributing arms to Gaza-based clans that have positioned themselves in opposition to Hamas. The approach represents one element of Israel's strategy for operating within Gaza's complex tribal and political landscape. Lieberman's criticism centers on the lack of oversight capabilities, arguing that Israel cannot effectively track or control the weapons once distributed. He warned this could create future security risks for Israeli forces. Israeli FM condemns attack on Jewish jeweller in Tunisia

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar has condemned an attack on a Tunisian Jewish jeweller on the island of Djerba, urging Tunisian authorities to implement all necessary measures to protect the Jewish community. Writing on his X account, Sa'ar stated: 'I strongly condemn the attack that targeted a member of the Jewish community in Djerba, Tunisia, today. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.' He continued: 'This attack comes two years after the previous bloody attack that claimed the lives of Jews and members of the security forces during the Lag B'Omer celebrations.' Tunisian media had previously reported that a Tunisian Jewish jeweller was attacked with a sharp object, resulting in severe injuries to his hand. According to reports, a dispute erupted between the jeweller and the attacker, though the reasons remain unclear. The LDJ website quoted Yaniv, son of the Chief Rabbi of Djerba and owner of a nearby jewellery store, recounting the incident during a telephone call with Chief Rabbi Moshe Lewin. Yaniv said, 'Yesterday, the assailant went around the shops in the area, asking if they were owned by Jews, and then returned this morning carrying a large knife.' Yaniv noted that the victim 'survived thanks to the brave and quick intervention of the neighbours, who are themselves members of the Jewish community.' An unverified video of the attack has been circulated online by activists. No official statement has yet been issued regarding the incident, but sources close to the matter reported that the assailant is a resident of Ajim city on Djerba who lives in a working-class neighbourhood in the capital. A dispute reportedly broke out between the victim and 'Youssef Y.', the owner of a jewellery store in the area, which escalated until the assailant drew a knife. Both parties were subsequently brought under control and transferred to the National Security District headquarters in Djerba. The shop owner sustained a minor elbow injury in the incident. His condition is described as normal, and he is currently in the custody of local National Security.

Trump opens negotiations with Iran, catching Netanyahu off guard

BY Libyan Express May 04, 2025 - 03:14 A technician is seen at an Iranian uranium conversion facility in Isfahan. REUTERS US President Donald Trump has launched direct talks with Iran aimed at preventing nuclear weapons development, a move that reportedly surprised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his recent Washington visit. According to multiple sources, Netanyahu travelled to Washington seeking support for military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, only to learn shortly before a joint press appearance that the US had initiated negotiations with Tehran. The negotiations, which have already progressed through three rounds of talks in just three weeks, focus on a framework similar to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that Trump abandoned during his first term. The proposed new agreement would extend duration to 25 years, tighten verification, and expand so-called sunset clauses. Key points under discussion include Iran limiting its uranium enrichment to 3.67%, reducing stockpiles, and accepting expanded IAEA oversight in exchange for substantial sanctions relief. However, significant obstacles remain, including Iran's insistence on maintaining enrichment capability versus Netanyahu's demand for 'zero enrichment' and complete dismantling of nuclear infrastructure. Whilst negotiations continue, regional tensions remain high. Iranian leadership reportedly remains deeply concerned that Netanyahu may launch a strike – deal or no deal. The Pentagon has meanwhile deployed six B-2 bombers to Diego Garcia and positioned two aircraft carriers in the region. The views expressed in Op-Ed pieces are those of the author and do not purport to reflect the opinions or views of Libyan Express.
