Minnesota Twins activate Carlos Correa from concussion injured list

May 23 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Twins activated shortstop Carlos Correa off the concussion injured list, the team announced Friday. He is expected to be in the lineup Friday night against the Kansas City Royals.
Correa sustained the concussion when he ran into outfielder Byron Buxton during a win over the Baltimore Orioles on May 15 in Baltimore. Both players were placed on the seven-day concussion list.
Correa hit .236 with two home runs and 13 RBIs through his first 41 appearances this season. The two-time All-Star hit .310 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs over 86 appearances in 2024.
The Twins (27-22) are tied with the Cleveland Guardians (27-22) for second place in the American League Central, five games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (33-18).
On Thursday, the Twins optioned infielder Ryan Fitzgerald to Triple-A St. Paul. They sent infielder-catcher Mickey Gasper to St. Paul in a corresponding move.
The Twins will host the fourth-place Royals (28-23) in the first game of a three-game series at 8:10 p.m. EDT Friday in Minneapolis.

He won the 2017 Home Run Derby in Miami, but since then, he's chosen to skip the event to focus on staying fresh for the regular season. Following that 2017 Home Run Derby win, Judge acknowledged it exacerbated a shoulder injury he suffered crashing into the wall a few weeks earlier. He needed surgery on the shoulder after the season. Participating in the Derby can add extra wear and tear in the middle of a grueling schedule. For Judge, it's about protecting his body and prioritizing the team's success over personal accolades. Remember, in 2023, Judge declined an invite to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic because it was the first year of his new contract with the Yankees, and he didn't think it would be fair to take away from the team. Miami in the thick of it for in-state WR Somourian Wingo Jr.
The Miami Hurricanes have hosted Somourian Wingo several times over the last two years. But last weekend he was able to take in campus in an official visit capacity and it offered more depth for the St. Augustine (Fla.) High School wide receiver to take in. Advertisement "In the meetings, spending time with academics and going over all of that gave a better understanding of how it would be," Wingo said. "All the people stood out -- the staff, the players. It's always a good time being here spending time with the players and coaches, it's a blessing more than anything. "It was about adding on to what we know, plus that I'd have a lot of fun here. It was more about having fun instead of being strictly a football player. They showed that." The well-rounded trip to South Florida also came with more sit-downs from assistant coaches under Mario Cristobal, including wide receivers coach Kevin Beard. "The bond always strengthens when I'm around KB," Wingo said. "Especially this weekend, being around him with my family. Showing that he can be that same person around my family, my siblings... The overall push from Miami has long been evident for Wingo, who kicked off his official visit slate with the Hurricanes. Florida hosts him this weekend before stops at Alabama and South Carolina to round out the month. "It's a huge impact, they set the standard," he said of Miami. "Now everywhere I go they got to know they have to give it 110 percent and show they really want me just as Miami did."
