RM88M to Upgrade 121 Overcrowded Schools by October
SHAH ALAM: The Works Ministry (KKR) will upgrade 121 overcrowded schools, involving 127 classrooms in six states, through a project to address the issue of overcrowded schools, involving an allocation of RM88 million.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said a total of 127 letters of acceptance (SST) were handed over to the successful contractors today to implement the project in Selangor, Langkawi, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu and Penang.
'Selangor has the highest number of SSTs, namely 111 works, followed by seven in Perak, four in Pahang, three in Negeri Sembilan, and one each in Terengganu and Penang.
'The scope of the project involves 117 construction works for premier classrooms and 10 classrooms for the Integrated Special Education Program (PPKI) using the industrialised building system (IBS) concept,' he told reporters at the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters here today.
Ahmad said the IBS concept not only helped to speed up the construction process, but also ensured better and sustainable construction quality, with all projects targeted to be completed by October this year.
He said the implementation of the project was part of the MADANI Government's initiative in prioritising people's projects to improve the quality of learning while creating a conducive education ecosystem.
'These projects are a proactive step by the Ministry of Education (KPM) to achieve the target of implementing a single-session school system by 2030.
'In addition, the ministry also wants to provide more modern and comfortable facilities while creating a conducive teaching and learning ecosystem for students, teachers, as well as the school staff,' he said.
Earlier, Ahmad handed over SST to 127 contractors for the project. They were selected through an open tender that was implemented from April 24 to May 16.
A total of 14 district engineers from the Public Works Department were also appointed to monitor the construction work of the projects concerned.

'More critically, such indecisiveness undermines public and business confidence in government policy,' Tan who is also an MCA Youth central committee member pointed out in a statement. 'The postponements also reflect unresolved issues within the current e-Invoice framework and its support infrastructure. 'The Finance Ministry (MOF) and the IRB must be transparent about these shortcomings by providing a concrete and practical plan for improvement rather than resorting to indefinite delays.' In a related development, MCA also took a swipe at the recent announcement by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying that the government will soon expand the scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) via a gazette next week. 'This effectively amounts to a backdoor tax increase and lays bare the fiscal pressures facing the national treasury,' asserted Tan. 'Given the current state of strained public finances and rising fiscal burdens, the government must set aside political prejudices and seriously consider the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).' He added: 'Compared to the existing SST regime, GST offers a more structured, transparent and broad-based taxation model. Spain's Sonar Festival hit by artist boycott over parent firm KKR's Israel ties
MADRID, June 6 — Dozens of artists have pulled out of next week's Sonar electronic music festival in Spain, protesting financial ties between its parent company and real estate investments in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. In an open letter posted on social media, more than 60 artists — including Arca, Asia, DJ Paquita Gordon, and Shaun J. Wright — accused the private equity firm KKR of being 'fully complicit in the genocide committed by Israel in Gaza'. Sonar — which will be held in Barcelona this year June 12-14 — is one of around 80 global events operated by Superstruct Entertainment, which has been majority-owned by KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts) since October 2024. The artists are urging the festival to sever ties with KKR and to adhere to the principles of the international Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to financially pressure Israel into ending the occupation of the Palestinian territories. BDS accuses KKR of complicity in 'Israel's genocide and colonial apartheid regime', citing the firm's stake in German media group Axel Springer.
