Israel delivered Patriot systems to Ukraine

Yahoo4 hours ago

Patriot air defence systems that previously protected Israel's airspace have been deployed in Ukraine.
Source: Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Mariia Dovbenko, as reported by Mezha Media, a technology and IT news platform within Ukrainska Pravda's holding company
Quote from Brodsky: "There is a system very well known here in Ukraine – the Patriot system – which once saved us in the early 1990s during the first Gulf War. Back then, we received Patriot systems from the United States. And, by the way, these systems are now in Ukraine. These are Israeli systems that were in service in Israel in the early 1990s. We agreed to transfer them to Ukraine. Unfortunately, this has not been widely discussed, but when people say that Israel hasn't provided military aid, that's not true."
Details: In May 2024, it was reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would stop using the American-made Patriot air defence systems. They are being replaced by systems based on more advanced technologies.
Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to its partners for Patriot systems to defend against large-scale Russian attacks. These systems have proven highly effective, particularly in intercepting Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.
In May 2023, a Patriot system successfully intercepted the first Kinzhal missile over Kyiv – a turning point in Ukraine's defence against this type of Russian weapon. The effective use of Patriots strengthened the air defence of Ukrainian cities.
However, Ukraine still faces a shortage of such systems.
Background:
In April 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready to purchase 10 Patriot systems from the United States for US$15 billion, with European partners willing to support the financing.
In May 2025, The New York Times reported that a Patriot system previously based in Israel would be sent to Ukraine after undergoing modernisation.

NATO chief's speech was meant as a call to arms, but it was also a shameful admission for the alliance

For all the stark warnings and ominous predictions made by the head of NATO today, one key fact remained unmentioned. The West is still funding the Russian war effort to the tune of billions by buying oil and gas, funnelling vast amounts into an economy that is now fully militarised. Russian gas exports to Europe went up by 20% last year and its LNG exports to the EU are now at record levels. Read more: Vladimir Putin's Russia is now making more money from selling fossil fuels than Ukraine receives from allies. NATO's secretary general Mark Rutte did not mention any of that. But he did spell out what Russia is doing with all that hydrocarbon revenue. It is using it to put its economy onto a war footing that is now pumping out munitions at a rate that puts the West to shame, to the extent Russia could have the capability to take on NATO in three to five years, according to Mr Rutte. New Sky News podcast launches on 10 June - simulates an attack by Russia to test UK defences 👉Search for The Wargame on your podcast app👈 The secretary general meant his speech in London as a warning and call to arms. But it was also a shameful admission for the Western alliance he heads. More than three years into this war, Russia is outstripping the entire Western bloc by four to one in terms of munitions production. Russia's economy is 1/25th that of NATO's combined economic might and crippled by sanctions and yet every three months pumps out more shells than the entire NATO bloc manages in a year. And while Europe carries on funding Russia's war effort by buying its oil and gas, none of that is going to change. We are now in the insane and obscene situation where European taxpayers will have to fork out more, a lot more, to counteract the threat of a militarised Russia, whose resurgence is being subsidised by Western countries buying its fossil fuels. Historians will look back on that and wonder why it was allowed to continue more than three years into this devastating conflict.

Russia launches nearly 500 drones and missiles at Ukraine during overnight bombardment

Russia launched nearly 500 drones and missiles at Ukraine late Sunday, marking the biggest overnight drone bombardment of the war, the Ukrainian Air Force reported on Monday. According to The Associated Press, the strike comes after Ukraine attacked Russian air bases on June 1. It also comes as part of the Kremlin's summer offensive amid direct peace talks, which haven't yet made any progress toward stopping the fighting. Even though the two countries haven't been able to reach a ceasefire, Ukraine and Russia swapped another batch of prisoners on Monday. Russia's overnight bombardment included 479 drones and 20 missiles of various types, which were fired at different areas of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force said that barrage mainly targeted the central and western parts of the country. 'According to preliminary data, as of 10:30, air defense neutralized 479 enemy air attack vehicles, 292 were shot down by fire weapons, 187 were lost in location,' the air force said in a message, per ABC. Ukrainian officials say that only 10 drones or missiles hit their targets and one person was injured. As the strikes began, the Ukrainian air force issued a number of alerts saying Russian drones were targeting multiple areas throughout the country, according to ABC. Following these alerts, Polish and allied planes briefly scrambled in Polish airspace. Along with the recent escalation in aerial attacks, there has been a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the front line. According to the AP, on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 'the situation is very difficult' in some of those areas. As Russia and Ukraine fail to reach a ceasefire, the two countries have exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war — both soldiers and civilians — which is a small sign of cooperation. The latest prisoner swap occurred on Monday and the staggered exchange process is expected to continue over the coming days, per the AP. The swap included wounded soldiers and those under 25 years old. 'The process is quite complicated, there are many sensitive details, negotiations continue virtually every day,' Zelenskyy said, per BBC. Petro Yatsenko, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian body overseeing prisoners, said the Ukrainian POWs were in poor health. During their imprisonment, they lacked food and had no access to medical care. The AP reported that over 200 Ukrainian POWs have died during imprisonment since the war started in 2022.

Madleen boat seized by Israel forces: What to know

(NewsNation) — Israeli forces said on Monday they seized a Gaza-bound aid boat and several people who were on board. The voyage on the Madleen had set out to protest Israel's ongoing military campaign in the Gaza Strip by a group of activists. The seizure of the ship was the result of a longstanding blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the war. This latest development opens up a whole new discussion to be had. What is the Madleen, and who are the key organizations? What were the consequences of the interception for the activists onboard? What are the potential outcomes of the IDF's actions against the flotilla? The Madleen is a boat used by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which set out on a week-long voyage from Sicily, Italy, to protest Israel's ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition is a movement composed of campaigns and initiatives from different parts of the world, all working together to end the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza. Several of its founding groups include the Free Gaza Movement, European Campaign to End the Siege on Gaza, and İHH İnsani Yardım Vakfı. Palestinians say Israeli fire kills 12 near aid sites. Israel says it fired warning shots Greta Thunberg was one of the 12 activists on board the Madleen who were detained. Thunberg is a Swedish climate campaigner. Along with her was Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is of Palestinian descent, and Brazil's Thiago Ávila. Hassan had been previously barred from entering Israel because of her opposition to Israeli policies toward the Palestinians. The boat had also stopped last week to rescue four migrants who had jumped overboard to avoid being detained by the Libyan coast guard. All 12 activists who were aboard the Madleen were detained by Israel's Foreign Ministry. Reports from Israeli media indicated that the Madleen and its crew members were being taken to the port city of Ashdod. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said all the activists would be returned to their home countries without harm. Israel says it has recovered the bodies of 2 Israeli-American hostages from the Gaza Strip On Sunday, the IFM made assurances that it would halt the 'Madleen from reaching the Gaza Strip. They also acknowledged that the humanitarian aid on the boat would be sent to Gaza through established channels. With the Freedom Flotilla unable to reach Gaza, the possible outcome of those people in need in the area getting the aid they need only shows more difficulty ahead. Spain and Turkey officials condemned Israel for the seizure of the vessel, saying, 'This heinous act by the Netanyahu government, which threatens the freedom of navigation and maritime security, once again demonstrates that Israel is acting as a terror state.' Hamas seeks amendments to Gaza ceasefire proposal but US envoy calls it 'unacceptable' The Freedom Flotilla last month attempted to reach Gaza by sea but failed after another of the group's vessels was attacked by two drones while sailing in international waters off Malta. The group blamed Israel for the attack, including the damage caused to the front section of the ship. Israel previously had started allowing basic aid into Gaza last month after a nearly three-month blockade, They were warned by humanitarian workers and experts of famine if the blockade and its military offensive continued.
