Carter Burwell, Three-Time Oscar Nominee, Elected to Motion Picture Academy's Board of Governors
Carter Burwell, a three-time Oscar nominee for best original score, has been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He joins two returning governors — Lesley Barber and Richard Gibbs — in representing the music branch. Burwell replaces Charles Fox, who was the third governor representing the music branch.
Burwell, 70, has received Oscar nominations for scoring Todd Haynes' Carol (2015) and two films directed by Martin McDonagh: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022).

Burwell, who was born in New York City, has scored most of the films made by Joel and Ethan Coen. He has also scored films by such other directors as Bill Condon, Spike Jonze, James Foley, Brian Helgeland and John Lee Hancock.
Burwell received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2011 for his work on HBO's Mildred Pierce, winning for outstanding music composition for a miniseries, movie or a special (original dramatic score).
Burwell is one of four pros who were elected to the board of governors for the first time, along with Peter Kujawski (Executives Branch), Gigi Williams (Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch) and Andrew Roberts (Visual Effects Branch).
Ten incumbent governors were reelected to the board: Marlee Matlin (Actors Branch), Marlon West (Animation Branch), Richard Hicks (Casting Directors Branch), Dion Beebe (Cinematographers Branch),Jason Reitman (Directors Branch), Chris Hegedus (Documentary Branch), Nancy Richardson (Film Editors Branch), Jason Blum (Producers Branch), Missy Parker (Production Design Branch) and Peter Devlin (Sound Branch).
Three governors are returning to the board after a hiatus: Isis Mussenden (Costume Designers Branch), Christina Kounelias (Marketing and Public Relations Branch) and Larry Karaszewski (Writers Branch).
Returning governors, in addition to Barber and Gibbs, are Pam Abdy, Wendy Aylsworth, K.K. Barrett, Rob Bredow, Brooke Breton, Paul Cameron, Patricia Cardoso, Eduardo Castro, David Dinerstein, Ava DuVernay, Linda Flowers, Jennifer Fox, Jinko Gotoh, Lynette Howell Taylor, Kalina Ivanov, Simon Kilmurry, Laura C. Kim, Ellen Kuras, Hannah Minghella, Andy Nelson, Daniel Orlandi, Lou Diamond Phillips, Gerald Quist, Stephen Rivkin, Howard A. Rodman, Terilyn A. Shropshire, Dana Stevens, Mark P. Stoeckinger, Chris Tashima, Kim Taylor-Coleman, Jean Tsien, Rita Wilson and Debra Zane.
The Production and Technology Branch and Short Films Branch did not hold elections. New governors-at-large will be elected and announced later this month.
The board of governors sets the academy's strategic vision, preserves the organization's financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission. The newly elected 2025-26 board will take office at the first scheduled board meeting of the new term.
The academy has 19 branches, each represented by three governors, except for the Animation Branch, represented by two governors; the Short Films Branch, represented by one governor; and the Production and Technology Branch, also represented by one governor. Governors, including the board-elected governors-at-large, may serve up to two three-year terms (consecutive or non-consecutive), followed by a two-year hiatus, after which eligibility renews for up to two additional three-year terms for a lifetime maximum of 12 years.

Costco has a knack for spotting a food trend the moment it tips from niche to mainstream and then rolling out a tray that feeds half the neighborhood. The Chicken Street Tacos showed up just as weeknight taco trucks became a thing. A Frozen Strawberry Lemonade slid into the food court the second every drive-thru debuted its slushy version. Now the warehouse has set its sights on birria — the slow-braised, chile-rich beef you dunk in consommé until your fingertips match the sunset. The online buzz was mixed before I even unboxed it. On TikTok, @yungfoodbeast shows off a dramatic cheese pull and calls the tacos 'fire." While @photogami (aka The Sushi Guy) takes a more hands-on approach, he dips each taco in the consommé for extra moisture, sets them in a lightly oiled skillet, then presses and flips until the tortillas pick up that deep-orange quesabirria crust and the cheese melts right back where it belongs. He's into the beef, tender, well-seasoned — no complaints there. But he still raises an eyebrow at the total price, skillet success or not. I found the tray right next to the Chicken Street Tacos, and it drew a small crowd the moment I paused for a photo. Sydney Martin One shopper even tapped my shoulder to see if I'd tried it yet. Field research nearly turned into a jump scare, but her curiosity told me everything about the aisle's vibe: cautious excitement and a little sticker shock. Before I committed, I zoomed in on the shelf tag: Birria Taco Meal Kit — $6.49 per pound, eight tacos, Jack cheese, corn tortillas, Spanish-style rice, plus a cup of consommé. Sydney Martin Costco doesn't hide the math, but that per-pound price can feel friendly until you realize the tray weighs almost four pounds, which puts you north of $25 the moment it lands in your cart. Credit where it's due: The packaging team makes this feel like a true crowd-pleaser. Still, I found myself doing the quiet Costco math in my head, wondering whether this was a clever illusion or a genuine bulk bargain. Sticker shock continued at home, so out came the scale. The kit weighs 3.89 pounds. All eight tacos together weigh just under two pounds. Sydney Martin My camera had trouble capturing the digital scale numbers, but the official weight was 28.30 ounces. When I opened one and weighed only the filling, it was roughly two ounces. Add it up, and you're looking at a total of about a pound of beef. Sydney Martin The rest of the weight is 17 ounces of consommé, 15.9 ounces of Spanish-style rice, and two lime wedges. Sydney Martin In dollars, roughly $11.50 pays for the tacos; the remaining $13-plus covers broth, rice, and citrus. Suddenly $6.49 a pound feels less friendly. Cooking was by the book: tacos straight on a sheet pan (I skipped parchment — poor choice) at 375°F for 20 minutes. Halfway through, white rivers of cheese were already bonding to the pan. Sydney Martin While the tacos baked, the consommé warmed on the stove, and the rice took a quick two-minute spin in the microwave. Sydney Martin Taste time. The beef? Tender, well-seasoned, still juicy after the oven stint, and excellent once dunked in the broth. The tortillas? Dry going in, tough coming out. A skillet crisp could help, but that's not what the box asks for. The consommé is flavorful, warm, and lightly spicy, but realizing seven of my dollars floated away in that pot dampens the glow. The rice lands squarely in the filler category: dry, lightly seasoned, and easy to ignore once the tacos disappear. Then there's the Chicken Street Taco comparison. That tray costs about $15, makes a dozen tacos, and throws in slaw, salsa, and crema, which works out to roughly $1.25 a taco. The birria kit costs north of three dollars per taco, offers fewer servings, and arrives without extras. Feed more than three hungry people, and eight tacos vanish in a blink. Sydney Martin Verdict: flavorful filling and chewy shells, but a premium price. If Costco softens the tortillas or trims a few dollars, I'll happily buy it again. Jenna Bush Hager Finally Debuts 'Strange' New Bob Haircut On ‘Today': 'I Feel A Little Embarrassed'
Today viewers finally got to see Jenna Bush Hager's exciting new look after the daytime host underwent a dramatic transformation live on the show, all thanks to Leslie Bibb's hairstylist. Like many other White Lotus fans, Bush Hager was inspired by Bibb's signature bob, cut and styled by celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan. So, they had McMillan stop by the show Monday to cut Bush Hager's hair during the live broadcast. Bush Hager debuted the new look during Tuesday's (June 17) broadcast, during which she admitted she's 'feeling a little strange.' 'You know that '90s movie Single White Female where you try to copy somebody to such an extent. You made this hairstyle so famous and then I used your hairstylist to get the same haircut and I'm feeling a little strange,' she told Bibb. Much like she did during the haircut, Bibb gave Bush Hager an empowering pep talk. 'No, you don't look strange. You look sexy, and powerful, and glamorous. And I kept saying it yesterday, you're a badass! You look so great!' the actress told Bush Hager. 'It's a big deal to do that.' Bush Hager went on to admit that she's feeling 'a little embarrassed' by all of the attention she's gotten for the haircut. She even shared that there were a lot of 'fake tears' and criticisms from her children when they saw her new haircut. 'Are those real tears? Your children are monsters! They're monsters,' Bibb jokingly responded. She later asked Bush Hager if she felt 'lighter' after getting the haircut. 'I felt lighter. There's a lot of change happening and I feel a little embarrassed by the attention. And I know the people who work for me are like, 'Mother loves attention,' but I felt a little embarrassed,' the Today host admitted. Just before getting her haircut on Monday's show, Bush Hager joked that the new look will help her shed all of the changes that happened this year – including, for example, Hoda Kotb's shocking retirement and exit from Today. 'I've been through change, I'm gonna wash the Hoda right out of my hair!' she joked, before quickly adding, 'I love her and she's still my friend, but maybe it's time for a whole new look.'
