Education Ministry takes action after teacher's alleged affair goes viral
NIBONG TEBAL, May 27 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) has taken action to 'rest' a teacher involved in an alleged illicit relationship with a wiring technician from teaching until an internal investigation into the issue is completed.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that although the teacher in question was resting from teaching, she is still working as a civil servant and that action was taken so as not to interfere with the ongoing investigation.
'We have already taken a stance to ensure that the investigation is ongoing. So, she (the teacher) needs to be in the investigation process and ensure that there is no disruption in the investigation.
'I would like to assure all parties that the Ministry of Education takes seriously on matters which are related to the integrity and morals of teachers,' she told reporters after attending the Opening Ceremony of the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) Scholarship organised by Farm Fresh Berhad at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah here today.
She said the Ministry of Education takes full responsibility to ensure that teachers in this country comply with all the integrity and ethics of teaching that have been set by the ministry.
In this regard, Fadhlina stressed that the Ministry of Education will always remind teachers about their behaviour, whether inside or outside school, because educators carry the image of teaching, which is always seen as a role model in society.
A viral item on social media has been circulating about an illicit relationship between a teacher and a closed-circuit television technician when both of them are still married to their respective partners. — Bernama

He said the democratic system had allowed the formation of many political parties and, therefore, a grand alliance involving intellectuals, corporate figures, politicians and religious scholars was needed to unite the Malays. 'All segments must support this new platform. The proliferation of Malay-dominated parties is seen as a cause of division, and this is difficult to control because democracy allows it.' He said all Malay-based parties must come under a single, broad coalition as a platform to safeguard the community's future. When asked if this movement was a better platform to unite Malays compared to Perikatan Nasional (PN), he responded: 'PN is a coalition of political parties. It's different from this new platform.' The grouping announced by the former prime minister yesterday goes beyond existing political parties, he added. Earlier today, Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said Mahathir's new platform is nothing more than part of a repeated cycle of failed political experiments. He said Malay politics cannot be built on nostalgic rhetoric and repeated attempts to form new, loosely structured coalitions without a clear struggle or foundation. Besides Tuan Ibrahim, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin and Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin were also present at Mahathir's announcement for the new grouping yesterday. Mahathir said the formation of the new Malay alliance is aimed at 'restoring Malay power' in government. He said the coalition, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a formal political party for now but serves as an umbrella platform to protect the political and economic future of the Malay community. He also invited individual Umno members to join the coalition — but not the party as a whole. This marks Mahathir's latest effort to unite the Malays through a political platform, following previous initiatives such as Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) and Pejuang, ahead of the 15th general election (GE15). However, all candidates linked to GTA were defeated in GE15, including Mahathir himself, who lost his deposit and failed to retain his Langkawi seat. GTA, launched in 2022, was effectively dissolved a year later when Mahathir, its chairman, admitted the movement was not effective at gaining voter support.

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.

13 foreigners nabbed for running illegal homestay operation in KL
The 13 people arrested comprised nine men and one woman from Bangladesh, one Indonesian man, and one woman each from India and the Philippines. (Immigration Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Thirteen foreigners involved in an illegal homestay operation were detained by immigration officials during a raid in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. Immigration deputy director-general (management) Ismail Mokhtar said the raid at Jalan Ipoh and Jalan Sultan Ismail followed two weeks of surveillance and public tip-offs, Bernama reported. 'These foreigners rented local properties and managed bookings online, with rental rates ranging from RM80 to RM400 per night depending on room size. The operation is believed to have been running for about a year,' he said. Authorities also seized tenancy agreements, passports (four Bangladeshi, one Indonesian, and one Indian), 48 room access cards, a laptop, three mobile phones, guest records, RM74,000 in cash and US$2,160. The 13 people arrested comprised nine men and one woman from Bangladesh, one Indonesian man, and one woman each from India and the Philippines. They are aged between 24 and 40. All 13 were taken to the immigration headquarters in Putrajaya for further action. Ismail added that six Malaysians and one Bangladeshi man were issued notices to assist with the investigation.
