The decision to paint the wall black was made at the request of President Donald Trump.
In a renewed effort to strengthen border security and deter illegal immigration, the Trump administration has announced plans to paint the US-Mexico border wall black. US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made the announcement during a press conference held at the border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, on Tuesday.
The decision to paint the wall black was made at the request of President Donald Trump. 'When something is painted black, it gets even warmer, making it even harder for people to climb," Noem explained. She also noted that the black coating will help protect the steel structure from rust and weather damage.
The move is part of a broader effort by the administration to reinforce the border wall with more advanced security features. 'There will be more added to it as far as technology, cameras, sensors," Noem said, outlining the administration's plan to integrate surveillance and detection tools along the border.
This isn't the first time the idea of a black border wall has surfaced. Back in 2020, similar discussions took place as Trump's officials tested black paint on certain sections of the wall to assess its impact on both durability and deterrence.
Although DHS has not provided specific details regarding the timeline or cost of the painting project, Axios reported that inquiries have been made to the department, with no official comment released as of yet.
According to a recent NewsNation report, the Trump administration has allocated $46.5 billion toward the completion of the border wall. During the press briefing, Noem claimed that the US currently has 'the most secure border that we've ever had in the history of this nation," citing zero illegal crossings recorded in the months of May, June, and July.
Noem expressed hope that the changes will encourage migrants to enter the country legally. 'The goal is for people to come to our country the right way, so they can stay, build a life here, and pursue the American dream," she said.
She also emphasised on the administration's stance on border security, claiming that President Trump understands that 'without borders, we cease to be a nation."

Vice-President, the contest The Vice-President is expected to embody neutrality, remain above partisan politics, and uphold an unbiased stance that is free from any rigid political ideology. Traditionally, these posts have been held by eminent individuals whose contributions to society and the nation have been exemplary. By these standards, Justice B. Sudershan Reddy is a good choice. His is a distinguished judicial career. In contrast, C.P. Radhakrishnan, the NDA's nominee, is a seasoned political figure with a long record in public office, and, therefore, may not be perceived as a non-partisan choice for this esteemed role. One hopes that Members of Parliament exercise a 'conscience vote'. May wisdom guide this decision. Varghese George, Secunderabad While the Vice-President of India is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and, therefore, has the duty to conduct proceedings in the House of Elders impartially, it was expected that a scholar with sound knowledge in the tenets of the Constitution would be elected as the next Vice-President in consultation with all the stakeholders, particularly the Opposition. Alas, it is not to be. With the ruling BJP dispensation announcing the candidature of C.P. Radhakrishnan, a hard-core member of the RSS and the BJP, and bypassed going in for a consensus candidate, we now have a situation of a contest. It is unfortunate that some in the BJP in Tamil Nadu have invoked the son of the soil line. The people of Tamil Nadu are well aware that the Union government has always been acting against their interests. One can expect Mr. Radhakrishnan to be another spokesperson of the saffron party. Tharcius S. Fernando, Chennai India-China de-escalation We do need de-escalation at the Line of Actual Control. We also need the display of strong political will at the Centre and robust diplomacy to negotiate peace with China. We must not lose sight of the economic front. We need to settle a trade deal, bypassing American sanctions and also Chinese moves. Manas Agarwal, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh Urban parks Rapid urbanisation in India has only highlighted a key issue — an insufficient number of public parks. Parks serve an important purpose of bringing people from all walks of life together and creating harmony ('Open Page, 'For urban lung space', August 17). Parks improve the aesthetic value of the area and are a major source of green cover in the urban pockets, keeping the temperature under control. According to a study conducted by Pennsylvania State University, the amount of time spent in parks and green common spaces has a direct correlation with the well-being of an individual. R. US Sanctions More ICC Judges, Citing Tribunal's Actions Against Israel

The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on four more International Criminal Court judges or prosecutors, including those from allies France and Canada, in a new effort to hobble the tribunal, particularly over actions against Israel. "The Court is a national security threat that has been an instrument for lawfare against the United States and our close ally Israel," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement, using a term popular with President Donald Trump's supporters. Rubio said that the four people targeted by the tribunal based in The Hague had sought to investigate or prosecute nationals from the United States or Israel "without the consent of either nation." The four include Judge Nicolas Guillou of France, who is presiding over a case in which an arrest warrant was issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The case was brought forward by the State of Palestine, which is not recognised by Washington but, unlike Israel or the United States, has acceded to the statute that set up the tribunal in The Hague. Guillou, a veteran jurist, had worked for several years in the United States assisting the Justice Department with judicial cooperation during Barack Obama's presidency. Also targeted in the latest US sanctions was a Canadian judge, Kimberly Prost, who was involved in a case that authorised an investigation into alleged crimes committed during the war in Afghanistan, including by US forces. Under the sanctions, the United States will bar entry of the ICC judges to the United States and block any property they have in the world's largest economy -- measures more often taken against US adversaries than individuals from close allies. Rubio also slapped sanctions on two deputy prosecutors -- Nazhat Shameem Khan of Fiji and Mame Mandiaye Niang of Senegal. The State Department said the two were punished by the United States for supporting "illegitimate ICC actions against Israel," including by supporting the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant. The Trump administration has roundly rejected the authority of the court, which is backed by almost all European democracies and was set up as a court of last resort when national systems do not allow for justice. Trump on Friday welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska even though Putin faces an ICC arrest warrant, a factor that has stopped him from travelling more widely since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. Rubio slapped sanctions on four other ICC judges in June.
