‘Il Dono' Review: Slow Living

New York Times24-07-2025
In the opening scene of Michelangelo Frammartino's documentary-drama 'Il Dono,' the electric chime of a cellphone ring feels like a freak intrusion from another realm. At first, we watch from a fixed distance as an old farmer does yard work with a couple of young men, their actions unfolding in what feels like real time. Then there's the ring, which would seem innocuous enough were we not already so immersed in the man's rural existence: the birdsong, the trill of insects. When he picks up the device left behind by one of his young helpers, he treats it like an alien object. It's the first time he's ever seen such a gadget.
'Il Dono' premiered in Europe in 2003, but its recent restoration has occasioned its long-delayed arrival to New York. Serendipitously so, as the film's slow, meditative rhythms offer a reprieve from citygoers daily grinds — should they be willing to stash away that screen and lock into a much more languorous, almost mystical wavelength.
Like Frammartino's other films, 'Le Quattro Volte' and 'Il Buco,' 'Il Dono' is set around his family's hometown in the mountainous Italian region of Calabria. The almost wordless film follows the quotidian lives of two people: the old man, played by the director's grandfather, Angelo Frammartino; and an unstable young woman who reluctantly exchanges sex for car rides around town.
Despite the region's visual magnificence — its winding cobblestone roads and rolling hills — there's a melancholic emptiness to each of Frammartino's striking compositions, accented by the deliberate, solitary movements of its few (mostly aging) inhabitants. The young woman's story tells us that survival means escape, but otherwise 'Il Dono' manages to strike a balance between damnation and idolatry of its medieval setting. We're sucked in, enraptured, even as we feel its lives fading away.
Il DonoNot rated. In Italian, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 20 minutes. In theaters.

Billy Joel Reaches A New All-Time High, Decades Into His Career

Billy Joel's name is back in the headlines — and back on the charts — thanks to a new docuseries that details his life story and rise to musical superstardom. Billy Joel: And So It Goes premiered in two parts on HBO in July, and the effects of the popular show can be seen on music rankings in several countries as millions return to not just some of his biggest albums, but also his most successful songs — the ones that turned him into a household name. Joel even manages to reach a new career peak on one list in the United Kingdom as streams of his entire catalog, and of one set in particular, soar. Piano Man – The Very Best Of Peaks Piano Man – The Very Best Of is one of Joel's several compilations that bring together his hit songs. It's the project that regularly appears on the charts in the U.K., and this week it's gaining considerable ground on the Official Albums Streaming ranking. The title lifts from No. 30 to No. 26, and as it ascends, the compilation reaches a new personal best placement. Billy Joel's New Career High Throughout his career, Joel has landed many hit albums in the U.K., but he's only ever reached the Official Albums Streaming chart with one. As Piano Man climbs, the title brings the singer-songwriter to a never-before-seen peak on the list of the most-streamed collections in the country. Nearly 300 Weeks on the Chart and Counting Piano Man debuted on the Official Albums Streaming chart in July 2019, opening at No. 87 before disappearing. A month later, the full-length returned, and in the years since, it has risen and fallen, though it has maintained a steady presence on the tally since July 2021. The set has now spent 284 weeks on the Official Albums Streaming chart. That lengthy stay suggests that while the occasional concert or headline has likely helped it jump to new peaks — as is the case thanks to the docuseries — fans in the U.K. regularly press play not just on the collection, but also on the individual tracks that fuel it. Billy Joel Surgs on Multiple Tallies As it jumps to its new best showing on the Official Albums Streaming chart, Joel's Piano Man can also be found on four other tallies in the same country. The title rises almost 10 spaces on the Official Albums list — the ranking of the 100 most-consumed projects in the U.K. — and returns to three sales-focused lists at the same time.

Conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson on Her Fourth Tour With the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra—and Her Beloved Collection of Vyshyvankas

During World War II, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony became a shorthand throughout Europe. With Morse code for the letter V (three dots and a dash) following the same pattern as the symphony's iconic opening notes, the tune came to represent victory in occupied Europe. Conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson also reads a sense of triumph in the work—as well as one of resilience. That's why it's being featured in her latest tour with the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra, an ensemble comprising 74 musicians, all Ukrainian, including recent refugees and Ukrainian members of European orchestras. It was formed by Wilson (who is Canadian-Ukrainian) in the weeks following Russia's full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022. The musicians initially came together that summer for a concert tour of Europe and the United States. It was a massive undertaking, one that Wilson thought would be a one-off, followed perhaps the following year by a victory tour. Three years later, however, 'here we are,' Wilson says. She's speaking from her dressing room in Warsaw, where the Freedom Orchestra's fourth tour (nicknamed the Resilience Tour) will launch on August 14. It concludes in London on August 29, with stops in Switzerland, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, and the Netherlands along the way. On a rehearsal break, Wilson speaks to Vogue about the upcoming tour, her fall schedule conducting in Kyiv (where she is music director of the Kyiv Camerata) and Lviv, and—in between—her return to the Metropolitan Opera for a revival of Puccini's La Bohème. Vogue: How is it being reunited with the musicians of the Freedom Orchestra? Keri-Lynn Wilson: Everything's absolutely wonderful, despite the tragedy that's ongoing in our lives. We don't see each other for a year, so it's such an emotional experience when we all come together. And then the new repertoire, that's exciting. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony is very powerful. It has a very strong message of resilience, which is our message on this tour. Has it gotten easier to bring these tours together each year? No—hell no! [Laughs.] With the war progressing, things are actually getting tougher. It's tougher to get the male musicians out of the country. For example, we have a player who, two days before he was to come here, was drafted, and we couldn't get him out. In the past, we had help from the Ministry of Culture. [But now] it's a huge problem in Ukraine: They are desperate for men. So we're very concerned. The best-case scenario is that he plays in the military band there, but at this moment he's in physical training.

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially proposed to his longtime girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez, sealing their eight-year relationship with a dazzling multi-million-dollar diamond ring. The 40-year-old Portuguese football legend's engagement to the 31-year-old model was revealed on August 11, 2025, when Rodriguez shared the news on Instagram. In this and in all my lives'. The show-stopping piece has been estimated by jewellery experts to be between 25 and 30 carats, with a value ranging from $2 million to $4 million, placing it among the most expensive celebrity engagement rings ever (via The Cut). Ronaldo and Rodriguez's romance began in 2016 when they met at a Gucci store in Madrid, where she worked as a sales assistant. Their relationship became public the following year, and since then, the couple has built a family of five children. Their journey has included joyful milestones and certain heartbreaks, one being the death of their son during childbirth in 2022. The model's life with Ronaldo has been documented in her Netflix reality series, I Am Georgina, where fans got a glimpse into their relationship and Ronaldo's earlier hints about marriage. 'I didn't think at the beginning that [the relationship] would be this strong. But after a while, I felt that she was the woman of my life,' Ronaldo shared in the series. Speculation about a proposal began months ago when Rodriguez was seen wearing a different ring on her left hand. The chatter intensified after Ronaldo referred to her as his 'wife' during the 2024 Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai. The engagement was finally confirmed when Rodriguez posted the ring photo this week, making it Instagram official. While Ronaldo himself has yet to publicly comment, the news has quickly gone viral, fueled by his status as the most-followed person on the platform.
