African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Fikile Mbalula says the only way the party can overcome opposition from the Democratic Alliance (DA) - a member of the Government of National Unity (GNU) - is to win the next elections with an outright majority.
Speaking at the Duma Nokwe Memorial Lecture in Sedibeng on Tuesday, Mbalula said the ANC would not be deterred, even as the DA continues to challenge key government policies in court.
'Comrades, the misrepresentation of the Expropriation Act is evidence that the beneficiaries of apartheid will not sleep,' Mbalula said.
'Similarly, those who have taken us to court for advancing employment equity are working overtime to reverse the gains of our freedom.'
The DA has challenged both the Expropriation Without Compensation Act and the Employment Equity Amendment Act in court and has a track record of legal opposition to ANC policies.
In April, the party successfully contested the adoption of a fiscal framework in Parliament. Although the ANC had secured the budget with backing from both GNU allies and non-aligned parties such as ActionSA and Build One South Africa (BOSA), the DA and Freedom Front Plus opposed it.

Despite being the second-largest party in the GNU, the DA has failed politically to stop key legislation, including the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill and the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act
Mbalula said the ANC must secure a decisive electoral mandate to prevent policy gridlock.
'It is clear to us, as the ANC, that the only way to overcome this strategic setback is to win the elections with an outright majority,' he said. 'However, comrades, we must not just win the elections to manage contradictions, but to ensure radical and rapid socio-economic transformation.'
He argued that South Africans have already signalled their desire for change.
'Our people have said through the ballot that they want radical and accelerated change,' he said. 'As the ANC, we must listen to the masses and not justify the unjustifiable.'
Acknowledging the party's failure to win more than 50% in the last election, Mbalula dismissed claims of voter migration.
'Our people simply decided to stay at home. They did not go to any other political party,' he said. 'If they had, we would have a completely new government in the republic.'
He stressed that the ANC remains the country's largest party and will continue to push forward with its legislative agenda.
'That is why, comrades, with that 40%, we will deepen transformation,' he said. 'We will pass laws that deepen transformation—the BELA Act, the NHI, the Expropriation Act, Employment Equity, and more. Those who are in court to challenge these laws of transformation must gear up for a long battle, because we are not going to stop.'
Mbalula also invoked the legacy of Duma Nokwe, ANC secretary-general from 1958 to 1969, to call for introspection and reform within the party. Nokwe died in 1978 at the age of 50.
'It is in this sense that we believe Comrade Duma Nokwe gave us an opportunity to reflect and correct ourselves,' Mbalula said. 'This self-correction, comrades, is being realised through the process of organisational renewal and rebuilding. We must admit our mistakes and correct them.'

Batohi stands her ground as NPA prepares new Gupta extradition bid

National Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Shamila Batohi announced that the NPA was working on extraditing the Gupta brothers. Image: Ayanda Ndamane/Independent Newspapers National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Head, Advocate Shamila Batohi, has revealed that they were in the process of renewing extradition attempts of the Gupta brothers. This is despite criticism of failed prosecutions and extradition. In an interview with Newzroom Afrika on Friday, Batohi said work was being done to ensure that the brothers were brought to justice. 'The NPA is working very hard, and I don't want to give a time frame, but I am certainly hoping that within the next couple of months, they will be able to put together a new extradition with additional charges,' she said. Batohi said that the previous application failed without any explanation on why their numerous notes sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had not been responded to. However, Batohi stressed that they would still face the same challenges because they didn't know what was the cause of the delay initially. 'We certainly don't want to experience the same fate with the new extradition application when we don't have some of the reasons from the UAE court denying the first application,' she said. The attempt to extradite the Gupta brothers was made in 2023. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The Gupta brothers are accused of using their close relationship with former President Jacob Zuma to influence senior government decisions and appointments. This was for them to also profit financially from the state. The Zuma and Gupta families—collectively referred to as 'The Zuptas'—have been implicated in allegations of state capture, though both parties deny any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, political parties have been split over whether Batohi should step down or not. The call for her removal stems from NPA's high-profile failures, eroding public trust, and casting doubt on its ability to deliver justice. One of the most prominent disappointments has been the botched prosecution of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso, who faced multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault and human trafficking. ActionSA has urged Batohi to resign, pointing to a series of high-profile shortcomings within the NPA. In contrast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has expressed its opposition to her dismissal, signalling continued support for her tenure. But responding to criticism, Batohi said, she is not going anywhere. IOL Politics

Rebuild VBS, urges ANC treasurer-general

Ramokgopa advised ANC leaders to speak with one voice to preserve the dignity of the party. VBS Mutual Bank customers queue outside the bank, demanding their money in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, on 20 June 2018. Picture: Gallo Images/ANTONIO Muchave/Sowetan ANC treasurer-general Gwen Ramokgopa has pleaded with the Reserve Bank and National Treasury to assist the Vhembe community in Limpopo to rebuild the collapsed Venda Business Society (VBS) Mutual Bank. More than 53 people have been charged for theft, corruption, fraud, money laundering, contraventions of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, and racketeering for stealing and looting more than R2 billion of VBS Mutual Bank money since 2018. Ramokgopa was speaking during a well-attended memorial service of the late ANC veteran, Reverend Dr Tshenuwani Simon Farisani, at the George Phagadi Town Hall in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, this week. Farisani passed away on Thursday, 29 May 2025, and his funeral will be held at the University of Venda Stadium, outside Thohoyandou, on Saturday. The former prominent Lutheran Church Bishop and known political struggle hero was honoured for his resilience in the fight for freedom and equality against the apartheid regime. The service was attended by South African Communist Party deputy national chairperson Thulas Nxesi, Limpopo first female premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, Limpopo ANC secretary Vhamusanda Reuben Madazhe, Speaker of the Limpopo Legislature Dr Makoma Makhurupetsa, Mopani district municipality Mayor Pule Frelimo Shayi and leaders from various religious and political structures in the province and beyond. Speaking to the mourners at the service, Ramokgopa said Farisani had fought for VBS victims. 'Government, under the tutelage of President Cyril Ramaphosa, has been on the side of the victims. We always said those who stole from VBS must be punished and languish in jail. 'The Reserve Bank and the Department of Finance, under the tutelage of Minister Enoch Godongwana, must assist the grieving communities to rebuild the collapsed VBS Mutual Bank,' she said. 'We have many times successfully rebuilt our country, including the health system in Gauteng during the predicaments of Life Esidimeni. We have also successfully rebuilt the Limpopo provincial government after it collapsed through fraudulent activities after some in the era of mismanaged government funds. 'There is nothing that can stand in our way to rebuild the VBS Mutual Bank and begin on a clean sheet,' she said to thunderous applause. ALSO READ: Simelane VBS matter will not be swept under carpet Lazy mayors The treasurer also scolded lazy mayors, who sit idly while communities face poor service delivery. 'When I came here, I drove a sizeable number of potholes, and the feeling was unbearable. For the record, good roads are important to us because they have a positive impact on the economy of our communities, our regions, our province and our country. 'They attract investment that often blossoms our economy. I therefore implore you, Honourable Premier Ramathuba and your mayors, to fix all your roads and patch potholes so that investors can invest in your municipalities. 'Through this, we can win the fight against the triple challenges of inequality, unemployment and poverty,' she said. ALSO READ: Mayor claims she was exonerated of VBS graft allegations ANC conference slammed However, the memorial service did not go without controversy. Veteran journalist Mathatha Tsedu was invited to the stage to give testimony on the life well spent by Farisani and how his political acumen bolstered his journalism prowess. However, Tsedu used the platform to voice criticism of the irregularities surrounding the ANC Vhembe regional elective conference in May. 'This is the ANC of Farisani. He would be disappointed by how you skipped vital items in the programme, only to jump into nominations and elections of the top five officials. 'How do you jump the secretariat report and other vital items on the programme as if the main objective of the conference was to elect leaders,' he asked. The conference saw Tshitereke Matibe living up to his name — 'Tshitereke,' a Venda name meaning 'protest' — as he staged a bold demonstration at the venue, ultimately securing a fourth term. Tsedu's criticism was challenged by an ANC regional executive committee (REC) member. 'Tsedu does not understand the politics of the ANC. This is not journalism, he must just leave politics to politicians, and journalism to the newsroom. You can just read from his address that he is far from within,' said the senior member, speaking to The Citizen on condition of anonymity. The leader, who asked for his name to be withheld for fear of reprisal, said that despite the woo-ha, Matibe won the conference hands down. In response, Ramokgopa advised ANC leaders to speak with one voice in an effort to preserve the dignity of the party. NOW READ: Calls for VBS-linked Bojanala mayor to go

‘Declare Limpopo a GBV disaster zone'

Thohoyandou police station registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Limpopo must be declared a gender-based violence disaster zone, says the ANC Women's League. This is after a large number of contact crimes such as rape, murder and sexual harassment were registered in different police stations across the province in the fourth quarter of 2024/25. The province's Thohoyandou police station has been branded the rape capital of South Africa after it registered the most number of rapes and sexual offences in the country. Despite the fourth quarter crime statistics revealing a decrease in contact crimes, Limpopo recorded 105 cases including murder, assault GBH, rape, robbery and theft. The second biggest political party in the Limpopo provincial legislature, the DA, said Thohoyandou was in the top 30 stations for all contact crimes, where it ranked 15th. The station also appeared in the top 30 stations for various crimes 13 times. 'Thohoyandou is most often against the downward trend of a specific crime category in Limpopo, with increases in assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm [GBH], common assault and common robbery. 'Urgent high-level intervention is required as the SA Police Service (Saps) is losing the battle against crime in Thohoyandou,' DA provincial spokesperson for transport and community safety Marie Helm said. GBV crisis Helm, who doubles up as a member of the Limpopo legislature in Lebowakgomo, said Thohoyandou ranked first nationally for reported sexual offences and rape, Seshego police station 13th and Mankweng 18th in the top 30 stations for sexual offences. She said the per capita chances of being raped in Limpopo was above the national average and was indicative of persistent misguided efforts to instil a lack of zero tolerance for gender-based violence and femicide (GBV+F) in the society, as well as a lack of resources and experienced investigating officers. Provincial deputy speaker for the Limpopo legislature and secretary of the ANC Women's League in the province, Tebogo Mamorobela, pleaded with Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba to declare Limpopo a gender-based violence disaster zone. She said defenceless women and children were abused on a daily basis. Mamorobela added that the level of crime in Limpopo has reached a boiling point and the government and communities must join forces to win the war against it. No place for criminals Transport and community safety MEC Violet Mathye said there was no place for criminals, especially those who prey on defenceless women and children in her government. The MEC was speaking during a visit to the family of slain Ndzalamo Mlondobozi, who died after her live-in lover allegedly ran over her with a car. No arrests have been made and police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said investigations were still underway. ALSO READ: Alleged GBV victim laid to rest but still no arrest 'We have launched a war against crime, especially against the terrorists who lash out at our innocent women and children,' Mathye said. 'That is why our government, under the stewardship of our premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba is here today. We are here to provide support and pay our condolences to the family. 'We promise that no one is above the law and we will do everything and anything in our power to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrator in this case is made to face the law, come high or low water.' On the rape and murder heightened statistics, Matye said Thohoyandou police station was the entry and exit of all African people from the Southern African Development Community countries into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post. Without revealing the budget, Mathye said funds had been allocated and set aside to build more police stations and satellite police stations in the Vhembe region this financial year. 'We believe the more police stations we have in that region, the lower the statistics will be,' Mathye said. NOW READ: Senior NPA official denied bail in Limpopo case involving repeated child rape
