NEW DELHI: Australia's Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Test Championship final after suffering a painful finger injury on Friday at Lord's. The veteran batter sustained a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding at first slip during South Africa's second innings.
The incident occurred as Smith attempted to take a sharp chance off South Africa captain Temba Bavuma. With edges rarely carrying to the slips throughout the match, Smith had positioned himself unusually close, just 14 meters behind the stumps, and was wearing a helmet as Mitchell Starc bowled a 138 kph short ball.

Bavuma's thick edge flew toward Smith, but despite getting his hands up, the ball struck awkwardly, leading to the dislocation.
Smith immediately left the field, clearly in discomfort. Cricket Australia later confirmed that he had been taken to the hospital for X-rays and further medical attention.

The 36-year-old former captain, who has scored over 10,000 Test runs at an average exceeding 56, played a crucial role in Australia's first innings at Lord's with a well-crafted 66.
Smith's injury came with South Africa at 76/2, chasing 282 to win the WTC final. His absence will be keenly felt in the field as Australia look to defend their title without one of their most experienced players.

World Rapid And Blitz Team Championships: Arjun Erigaisi's Team MGD1 Claim Rapid Title
Last Updated: The Erigaisi-led side finished at the top of the table, ahead of second-placed Hexamind and Viswanathan Anand-led Freedom came in third. Team MGD1 clinched the Rapid event title at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships on Saturday as the Arjun Erigaisi-led side finished at the top of the table, ahead of second-placed Hexamind and Viswanathan Anand-led Freedom came in third. The team led by captain Srinath Narayanan comprised Tsolakidou Stovroula, Pentala Harikrishna, Leon Mendonca, David Anton Guijarro, Pranav and Atharva Tayade in addition to Erigaisi. MGD1, who had claimed the silver and bronze medals in the previous two editions of the event bettered their record to clinch the top podium spot with four wins on the last day of the Rapid event. 'This is very special! With the Indian team in the Olympiad we were the favourites to win and out here with Team MGD1 we were the underdogs. And yet we won gold again," skipper Srinath said following the triumph. 'Team MGD1 is all about Team Spirit. I was having a bad day on day 2 and others stepped up to keep the momentum going. Also Atharvaa's performance was out of this world," Erigaisi added. Despite commendable performances from across the spectrum, it was amateur player Atharvaa Tayade who shone the brightest with a nearly unblemished record at the team event that dictates contingents to include a sub-2000 ELO ranked male and female player each. Tayade remained unbeaten up until the final round in the Rapid section of the event in the United Kingdom to help his side script history with the victory as they became the first India team to clinch the coveted title in London. 'I am really happy! With this team it's mainly about a great culture! Even though I'm an amateur player they didn't make me feel like one," Tayade added. First Published: June 14, 2025, 10:00 IST

Watch: Aiden Markram Gets Emotional After Scoring Magical Ton For South Africa Vs Australia In WTC Final
South Africa's left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj called opener Aiden Markram a "big-match player" as the latter scored a century during his outing in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 against Australia at the Home of Cricket, Lord's in London on Friday. Markram (102* runs off 159 balls) scripted history by becoming the first Proteas batter to score a hundred in an ICC tournament final. He also became the fourth batter after Jacques Kallis (113* against Sri Lanka in the 1998 ICC Knockout semifinal against SL), Herschelle Gibbs (116* against India in CT 2002 semifinals), and David Miller (101 against Australia in the World Cup 2023 semifinal) to hit a century for SA in ICC knockout matches. Markram's masterclass! #AidenMarkram slams a stunning century as South Africa roar back into the #WTCFinal Will this be the knock that leads them to glory? WATCH DAY 4 👉🏻 #WTCFinal | #SAvAUS | SAT, JUN 14, 2.30 PM onwards on Star Sports 1, Star Sports 1 Hindi & JioHotstar — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 13, 2025 Speaking at ICC Digital after Day 3, Maharaj said, "I saw a different sort of desire and focus in Aiden's eyes today when he came off the field (prior to batting) as I think he wanted to rectify the mistake that he made in the first innings." "Kudos to him to put that into place. He's a big match player and big players rise up to the moment and rectify their mistakes very quickly. There's no better fitting moment for him to get a Test hundred here at Lord's in a final against probably a team that I don't think they've ever lost a final," the Proteas cricketer added. Maharaj also paid tribute to captain Temba Bavuma (65* runs from 121 balls), after his captain showed enormous determination to battle a hamstring injury and played a vital role in the unbeaten stand of 143 that has South Africa close to victory. "He had a little bit of a niggle, but the warrior and fighter that he is was there with Aidan to support it. It was amazing to hear how they complemented each other when they came off at the tea break, just hearing about how they're going to go about their business and understanding that obviously Temba can't run at full tilt, but Aiden embraced that," the 35-year-old player concluded.
