World Rapid And Blitz Team Championships: Arjun Erigaisi's Team MGD1 Claim Rapid Title
Last Updated:
The Erigaisi-led side finished at the top of the table, ahead of second-placed Hexamind and Viswanathan Anand-led Freedom came in third.
Team MGD1 clinched the Rapid event title at the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships on Saturday as the Arjun Erigaisi-led side finished at the top of the table, ahead of second-placed Hexamind and Viswanathan Anand-led Freedom came in third.
The team led by captain Srinath Narayanan comprised Tsolakidou Stovroula, Pentala Harikrishna, Leon Mendonca, David Anton Guijarro, Pranav and Atharva Tayade in addition to Erigaisi.
MGD1, who had claimed the silver and bronze medals in the previous two editions of the event bettered their record to clinch the top podium spot with four wins on the last day of the Rapid event.
'This is very special! With the Indian team in the Olympiad we were the favourites to win and out here with Team MGD1 we were the underdogs. And yet we won gold again," skipper Srinath said following the triumph.
'Team MGD1 is all about Team Spirit. I was having a bad day on day 2 and others stepped up to keep the momentum going. Also Atharvaa's performance was out of this world," Erigaisi added.
Despite commendable performances from across the spectrum, it was amateur player Atharvaa Tayade who shone the brightest with a nearly unblemished record at the team event that dictates contingents to include a sub-2000 ELO ranked male and female player each.
Tayade remained unbeaten up until the final round in the Rapid section of the event in the United Kingdom to help his side script history with the victory as they became the first India team to clinch the coveted title in London.
'I am really happy! With this team it's mainly about a great culture! Even though I'm an amateur player they didn't make me feel like one," Tayade added.

India Women Face Narrow 2-3 Against Australia In FIH Hockey Pro League
The Indian Women's Hockey Team suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat to Australia in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 match at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre on Saturday, according to a release from Hockey India. After going three goals down, India fought back through goals from Deepika (44') and Neha (52'), but the Australians held their nerve in a fierce final quarter to secure the win. Courtney Schonell (16'), Lexie Pickering (27') and Tatum Stewart (35') registered goals for Australia. The match also marked a personal milestone for midfielder Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, who completed her 50th appearance for India. There was little to separate the two sides in the opening quarter, with both teams showing intent and valuing possession. India adopted a patient approach but were quick to apply pressure on the Australian defence. Australia earned a penalty corner in the 10th minute, but India held firm to deny them. India's best chance came late in the quarter, when a swift attacking move forced Australian goalkeeper Zoe Newman into a sharp double save. As early as a minute into the second quarter, Courtney Schonell was at the end of a sharp pass from Grace Stewart. Schonell finished it with precision to give Australia the lead. Australia's high press meant India lost the ball in key pockets. In the 27th minute, a turnover from Navneet led to scrappy moments of play and a series of Australian shots on goal. Savita's reflexes held up against two consecutive shots, but on the second rebound, Lexi Pickering slotted it past the Indian Goalkeeper to double Australia's lead. India were unable to create chances on goal before proceedings broke for half-time. Momentum stayed with Australia as five minutes into the third quarter, Australia earned another penalty corner as their relentless pressure tested the Indian defence. The initial attempt was bravely defended by Sunelita Toppo. However, the sequence led to another penalty corner, which evolved to a penalty stroke. Tatum Stewart stepped up and drilled it past goalkeeper Bichu Devi, extending Australia's lead to 3-0. India found much-needed respite when they won a penalty corner with 68 seconds left in the quarter. Deepika was at the end of a crisp injection and flicked it in with precision to reduce the deficit to 1-3. India came out with all guns blazing in the fourth quarter, spurred by their goal. The Indian attack won three consecutive penalty corners in the 46th minute, but the scores were unchanged. India now played with a strong sense of urgency and put Australia under immense pressure. Australia buckled in the 52nd minute when they conceded another penalty scorer. Deepika's low driven shot was well defended, but Neha pounced on the ball in the ensuing chaos and buried it with finesse at close range to make it 2-3. India looked to threaten with a series of quick moves, but the equaliser eluded them. In the dying embers of the match, silky stick work from Navneet helped her glide into the circle before she was brought down for another penalty corner. However, Australia retained the lead to secure the victory. Prior to the start of the match, both teams observed a minute's silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the recent aircraft tragedy in Ahmedabad.

Rugby Premier League will transform the sport both on-field and off-field, says Rugby India President Rahul Bose
Rahul Bose had a dream. Being a former rugby player himself, he wanted the current lot of Indian players to rub shoulders with international stars, showcase their talents and help the game grow. For seven years, he made several efforts to launch a league for rugby, first as a former player, later as the President of Rugby India. It wasn't a smooth ride for the Indian actor as convincing people to invest in the sport wasn't easy. It took hours of meetings, endless discussions and crossing all hurdles to finally launch the world's first franchise-based Rugby 7s league. And when the Rugby Premier League eventually gets underway at the Andheri Sports Complex from Sunday, it will, indeed, be a dream come true for Bose, the rugby fraternity and all the players who waited for years for this moment. With GMR coming on board as the title sponsor and GMR Sports becoming the joint organiser of the league along with Rugby India, RPL went on to attract some of the biggest names in the world of rugby. And with six franchises coming in, it has managed to put up some star-studded teams, with a perfect mix of overseas and Indian players. Bose terms this as 'transformational'. 'There will be two kinds of transformation that will happen - one is on the field, and the other off the field. On the field, it will be about how these guys recover, how they get ready for the next game, how they take failure in their stride, and how the top players in the world handle exhaustion, or maybe a bad refereeing decision. Secondly, it will be off the field and it will be the culture,' Bose told Sportstar. 'How do you conduct yourself when you are not playing? What kind of impression do you carry of yourself when you are presenting yourself to the outer world? Though both these don't happen directly, but through osmosis, it has already happened for the last two weeks. I can see a change already…' In the ever-changing sporting landscape, sustaining a franchise-based league isn't easy, and for a sport which is still considered 'niche', the challenge is always more. 'How to make the RPL sustainable? Of course, you have to have sponsors and media interest. But you'll only get sponsors and media interest once you have a great broadcaster like Jio Hotstar, and once you have a great product. Nobody knows what kind of numbers this league is going to garner. Nobody knows. It's completely virgin territory. So, we will have to see,' Bose, also a noted actor, said. 'All we can do is make sure that at no point in time do we say, 'Oh, we should have done this, and it would have been better'. At this point of time, we are maximising everything. There will be a full house tomorrow…' Rahul Bose and Satyam Trivedi with the franchise owners of the Rugby Premier League 2025. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT 'Best players in the world, broadcast in Jio Hotstar, World Rugby commentators, World Rugby match referees, match commissioners, medical commissioners. We have everything that we could get. Beyond this, we will just have to wait and watch. We have full faith in the product. I think Rugby 7s, without a shadow of doubt, is one of the most exciting television sports in the world,' he added. While the focus will be on the 30 marquee international players, it will be an opportunity for the Indian players to emerge as household names. 'I do think that a league will accelerate the platforming of this sport on mass media, on OTT and television, because otherwise nobody else was prepared to show it. We were just relegated to the sidelines of one or two webcasts. But this will put out the attractiveness of the sport. And hopefully that will result in more and more people sponsoring Indian Rugby, wanting to back us on television, on OTT,' Bose said. 'So the spillover effect of the RPL obviously has to happen into the larger ecosystem of Indian Rugby. That's something that we have to do. As a federation, we are ready for that…' ALSO READ | UTT 2025: After meteoric rise in world table tennis, Kanak Jha eyes home glory at the LA Olympics Being a former India player and an actor of repute, Bose brings a lot of experience and credibility to the table. But did being a 'known name' actually make things slightly easier? But Bose has a different take. 'I think a known face can help or harm a product,' Bose said, adding: 'If you believe that the person is just doing it for money and there's no connection, then it harms the product. If you believe, 'no, this guy is from this ecosystem and there's a lot of authenticity to what he or she is saying', then it helps…' 'I never talk unless I have something to say. So, I am very, very certain that celebrity endorsement can work both ways. But in this case, I'm not a celebrity. This (the sport) is my childhood, this is my youth. My 30s and my 40s, have all been on a rugby field. So for me, it's like breathing,' he said. In his long playing career, he had a ringside view of the sport, and now, as an administrator, this is perhaps Bose's biggest moment - fulfilling a dream and also sustaining the new league on the block. It's kickoff time!

Dropped For England Tests, Star Batter Scores 101 In Intra-Squad Match
Last Updated: Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a duck, Sarfaraz Khan retired after a hundred in India's intra-squad game. Star India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a duck, whereas Sarfaraz Khan was retired out after scoring a hundred in India's intra-squad game in Beckenham on Saturday, June 14, according to a report in The Indian Express. The team is gearing up for a gruelling five-match Test series against England, starting June 20 in Leeds. While BCCI had informed on Friday that KL Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill had scored half-centuries on Day 1 of the game, with Shardul Thakur being among the wickets, no such update was provided on Saturday. BCCI although posted a bunch of pictures from the game on the day, where Ravindra Jadeja was seen bowling with Sarfaraz on the crease, and most importantly, ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah was also seen bowling. Just a few blokes enjoying a game of red-ball cricket 🏏 — BCCI (@BCCI) June 14, 2025 The report adds that Abhimanyu Easwaran scored 39, Sai Sudharsan scored just one run less, Washington Sundar batted twice to score a duck and 35, Ishan Kishan was unbeaten on 45, while Shardul was 19*. If Sundar was given two chances to bat, it can be expected that the Indian team management is looking to give him a spot in the XI, which can be achieved only by benching Jadeja. Earlier, pacer Prasidh Krishna said that he has learned to 'switch on" according to the team's requirements and is now looking to carry his rich Indian Premier League form on to the tour of England. Having come back from a long injury layoff, Prasidh displayed excellent form in IPL 2025 and emerged as the league's highest wicket-taker and the winner of the Purple Cap. Prasidh is now chuffed about the five-match Test series against England, beginning at Leeds on June 20, for which the touring party is engaged in an intra-squad game in Beckenham. '(You have to) make sure you are focused when your chance is coming. But you can't be focused for a long time, especially when you are sitting outside, so you make sure you have a bit of fun," Prasidh said while speaking to BCCI. 'When you know you can sense the situation, you make sure you support your team in particular situations, making sure you are being switched on because anything can happen in the game," Prasidh added.
