Kawasaki down Ronaldo's Al Nassr to book ACL final
JEDDAH: Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr were dumped out of the Asian Champions League Elite as Japan's Kawasaki Frontale spectacularly ripped up the script with a 3-2 semifinal victory on Wednesday to reach the continental final for the first time.
The big-spending Saudi Pro League team succumbed in Jeddah when Yuto Ozeki and Akihiro Ienaga struck after Sadio Mane's deflected effort in the 28th minute had cancelled out Tatsuya Ito's 10th-minute opener for the J-League side.
Aiman Yahya scored from distance with three minutes left for Al Nassr to set up a tense finish but Frontale held on.
Kawasaki will next face Al Ahli, another Saudi side boasting a squad packed with high-profile foreign internationals, in the final on Saturday with both clubs looking to win their maiden continental crown.
"It was a very difficult game but the players were able to show their best performance on the pitch," said Frontale coach Shigetoshi Hasebe. "We're showing what we've been building since pre-season and I'm happy with that."
Underdogs Kawasaki, who had needed extra time to defeat Qatar's Al Sadd in the quarterfinals on Sunday, made an encouraging start, with Marcinho outmuscling Marcelo Brozovic to win possession 35 yards from goal before shooting wide.
Four minutes later Hasebe's outfit had taken an unexpected lead.
Ozeki's pass to the left found Marcinho and, after the forward's centre was headed towards the edge of the area by defender Mohamed Simakan, the unmarked Ito lashed a first-time volley into the top corner to stun the Saudi fans.
Al Nassr struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages, a Jhon Duran shot that flew high and wide after he was fed by Ronaldo in the 18th minute was a rare sight of goal for Stefano Pioli's side.
That changed when Mane levelled the scores, the former Liverpool man benefitting from a slight deflection off the shoulder of Yuichi Maruyama that took his right-foot shot past Kawasaki goalkeeper Louis Yamaguchi.
Ronaldo then rattled the frame of the goal with a header moments after sending an overhead effort wide of the target as Al Nassr started to take control of proceedings.
But with four minutes left in the half Kawasaki reclaimed the lead through the doggedness of Ito, whose determined running unsettled the Al Nassr defence. While Bento saved the winger's close-range shot, Ozeki calmly converted the rebound.
Frontale's decisive third came 14 minutes from time after Erison drove along the Al Nassr byline to set up fellow substitute Ienaga to strike.
Yahya thumped home Al Nassr's second in the 87th minute before Yamaguchi twice denied an increasingly desperate Ronaldo in injury time as Kawasaki claimed a famous win. — Reuters

Ronaldo fires Portugal into Nations League final
MUNICH, Germany: Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Germany in Munich on Wednesday, sending Portugal through to the Nations League final and breaking his run of bad fortune against the Germans. Ronaldo's 68th-minute tap in, a record-extending 137th international goal, sealed a first win over Germany after five losses, the 40-year-old's longest streak against any national side without tasting victory. After a stuttering first half, Florian Wirtz produced a moment of magic to give Germany the lead three minutes after halftime, starting and finishing a clever burst through the middle and heading in the opener. Portugal's Francisco Conceicao ran 35 metres to score a brilliant solo goal, levelling things up with half an hour remaining. Conceicao's goal was a fitting tribute to his father Sergio, who scored a hat-trick the last time Portugal beat Germany in a 3-0 win in 2000. The stage was then set for Ronaldo, who had missed two solid chances earlier, to land the telling blow, turning in a Nuno Mendes pass from close range. Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, will now face either European champions Spain or France in Sunday's final at the same venue. Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva celebrated Ronaldo's relentless desire to play and win. "It's never easy — I don't know how old he is, I think he's like 40 — to still be hungry to go on every day," said Silva. "We're very happy to have him with us." The loss is a setback for Julian Nagelsmann's Germany, who had lost just one of their previous 17 games. "It was a deserved defeat," Nagelsmann told DAZN. "We gave the game away in the first half. Defensively we lacked the ruthlessness that we've had in recent games." Portugal had four players backing up from winning Saturday's Champions League final — and the ensuing celebrations — but it was Germany who struggled to find rhythm early. The match started 10 minutes late due to a violent storm which left hailstones scattered across the turf. Aleksandar Pavlovic mislaid several passes while Portugal's approach of pressing Jonathan Tah almost paid dividends, with the defender insecure in possession. Ronaldo, greeted by Portuguese cheers and German boos every time he came near the ball, almost scored the opener six minutes in, but his shot was claimed by old La Liga sparring partner Marc-Andre ter Stegen, playing his first match for Germany since September 2024. WIRTZ OPENER Germany's best chance of the opening half fell to debutant Nick Woltemade with 18 minutes gone, but the 1.98-metre-tall striker's low shot was well saved by Diogo Costa. Ronaldo was inches away from giving Portugal the lead when the visitors broke immediately after halftime, but he was unable to get enough of his boot on a clever Nuno Mendes cross with an open goal beckoning. Germany took less than a minute to punish the miss. Wirtz tiptoed down the left side, attracting three defenders before laying off for Joshua Kimmich. The German captain chipped it over the Portugal defence and back to Wirtz, who expertly guided a low header into the bottom right corner. Both sides made three changes on the 60-minute mark but it was Roberto Martinez whose substitutions had the telling impact. Five minutes after coming on, Conceicao shed Robin Gosens with a shimmy near the half-way line and advanced goalwards before unleashing a superb curling shot past the desperate fingers of Ter Stegen. Ronaldo then put Portugal in front, nervelessly tapping in a Nuno Mendes pass to make up for his previous misses - his 137th goal for Portugal in his 219th international. Munich-born Karim Adeyemi rattled the crossbar with eight minutes remaining but Germany could not find an equaliser and will need to be content with a third-placed match in Stuttgart on Sunday. — AFP

Fernandes rejects Saudi move to stay at Man Utd: reports
LONDON: Bruno Fernandes has reportedly rejected a huge offer to leave Manchester United for the Saudi Pro League, opting to be part of Ruben Amorim's rebuild at Old Trafford. Reports said Al Hilal were willing to pay United up to £100 million ($135 million) for the 30-year-old Portugal international but had not made an official approach. United endured their worst finish of the Premier League era, finishing 15th. They also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. United captain Fernandes was one of the few players to emerge with credit from a disastrous season, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists across all competitions. The midfielder addressed his future after United's defeat to Spurs in Bilbao last month. "If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is and football sometimes is like this," he said. But as speculation swirled over his future, manager Amorim last week expressed his belief that his compatriot would remain at Old Trafford. Former United captain Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, said the development was "significant". "I think that there was an element of this situation that meant United getting that level of money, for someone of Bruno's age, obviously, you couldn't say that it would have been a bad deal," he said. "But, on the other hand, Manchester United's star player — only player at times — for the last four, five, six years, has been Bruno Fernandes. He's so important." Neville added: "To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character. "The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them." United are expected to be busy in the transfer market as Amorim reshapes his under-performing squad. The club have already signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves and are being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Departures could include Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals for United since his £47 million move from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. — AFP
