Evil stranger commits horrific act of violence against girl, 8, for being in his way, cops say
Nichalas San Souci, 24, bashed the girl as she waited to eat with her family at the pizzeria Saggio's in Albuquerque on the night of April 25, according to the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office.
He then slashed her neck during the cruel outburst, leaving the girl with bloody lacerations that required 19 stitches.
The jarring attack occurred while the little girl was with her mother admiring a fountain in the restaurant, according to the criminal complaint.
The mother told police that she heard her daughter scream and turned around to see San Souci holding her by her throat.
A patron waiting for his food intervened and 'slammed his tray of food' over San Souci's head, the complaint read.
The girl's father, Britton Rose, told KOAT that he was waiting for a table while his wife was with their daughter.
'That's when I heard my wife from across the restaurant yelling, "No, no, stop,"' he recalled.
Rose ran to his family's aid, and when he asked San Souci why he attacked his little girl, the attacker replied, 'She got in my way.'
The child's father and a second patron then 'punched and kicked' San Souci, according to the complaint.
Rose said that his daughter did nothing to provoke the man and that she was 'extremely lucky' to survive.
'Major arteries were missed,' he told KOAT.
An intensive care nurse and a paramedic were at the restaurant at the time and assisted the girl until emergency responders arrived.
She is expected to make a full recovery.
Officers found San Souci outside of the restaurant with a knife after the attack.
He was charged with child abuse resulting in great bodily harm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
San Souci was also charged with aggravated assault of a deadly weapon for attacking the girl's father with a pocket knife, according to the indictment.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges during his first court appearance on Monday.
Rose told KOAT that he felt angry when reacting to his child's attacker in court.
'But at the same time, I'm happy he's being held behind bars. The DA has made it clear they're taking the case very seriously,' Rose said, adding that he believed San Souci tried to kill his daughter.
'We're extremely lucky our daughter wasn't hurt worse - or even killed,' Rose told KOAT.
San Souci is still awaiting a criminal trial. Child abuse is a first degree felony with a basic sentence of 18 years and a $15,000 fine.
Aggravated battery convictions can result in at least three years of jail time, while aggravated assault has a basic sentence of 18 months.
If San Souci is found guilty on all the charges, he could serve up to 25 years in prison, legal expert John Day told KOAT.
An Instagram account for San Souci has his occupation listed as an artist.
He linked to a Spotify account where his artist bio reads, 'San Souci raps about the problems of the world to the metronome of his pounding hangover.'

Comedian Eric André WILL be able to sue over 'dehumanizing' search by cops at airport
Happy Gilmore 2 actor Eric André has received good news in a lawsuit he's involved in against Clayton County, Georgia over a 2021 incident at an Atlanta airport. The American actor-comedian, 42, and fellow entertainer Clayton English, 43, said in a legal complaint officers with the Clayton County Police Department breached their rights in separate incidents - André's in April 2021 and English's in October 2020. Both of the plaintiffs, who are Black, claimed in their complaint that race factored into why they were illegally stopped at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, according to legal docs reviewed by the Daily Mail. In each instance, André and English told the court that they were making their way through jet bridges connecting them to Los Angeles-bound Delta planes when police stopped them. The case was thrown out of court nearly two years ago in Atlanta, but on Friday, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th circuit revived it. Daily Mail has reached out to André's publicists for further comment on the story. The court ruled on Friday that André and English had their rights violated by the county, in terms of not having to deal with searches and seizures that do not have proper cause behind them. The appeals court threw out the racial discrimination claim filed by English and André, who formerly dated Blurred Lines beauty Emily Ratajkowski. An attorney for the entertainers, Barry Friedman, spoke about the latest development with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. Friedman said that he looks forward 'to returning to the trial court to learn even more about the Clayton County Police Department's unconstitutional jet bridge stop program.' At the time of the incident, André said he was in line for his flight when the officers asked for his consent to search his person, which he declined. This past March, Clayton County attorneys said that both André and English had consented to voluntary searches. The lawyers noted that neither man was detained, as they both were able to board their flights to California with their identification cards and airline boarding passes. The appeals court ruled that 'common sense and the Supreme Court both refute this theory,' as the 'plaintiffs' paths were blocked by officers, the officers held onto plaintiffs' IDs and boarding passes during questioning. Andre called the statement 'sad and full of misinformation' and denied that he gave officers consent to search him and said he was 'detained ... with no probable cause except for racism.' Bandits kill at least 27 in northern Nigeria mosque attack, officials say
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Aug 19 (Reuters) - At least 27 worshippers were killed and several injured early on Tuesday when armed bandits stormed a mosque in northern Nigeria's Katsina state during morning prayers, the village head and a hospital official said. Gunmen opened fire inside a mosque as Muslims gathered to pray at around 04:00 GMT in the remote community of Unguwan Mantau in Malumfashi local government area, residents said.
