‘Fire Of Wind:' Locarno & NYFF Title From Marta Mateus Lands North American Distribution Via Cinema Guild

Yahoo26-02-2025

EXCLUSIVE: Cinema Guild has picked up North American distribution rights to Fire Of Wind, the latest feature from Portuguese filmmaker Marta Mateus.
Fire Of Wind debuted at last year's Locarno Film Festival and had its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival. The film was produced by Mateus and Pedro Costa of Clarão Companhia, in collaboration with Fabrice Aragno of Casa Azul Films and Richard Copans of Les Films d'Ici. Cinema Guild will release the film in theaters in 2025.

Set in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, where Mateus was raised, a peasant community of grape-pickers become agents in an open-air ritual of remembrance and rebellion. The synopsis reads: It's harvest time and there's discontent in the fields. Soraia, a young girl, cuts herself. Blood mixes with wine. A black bull is on the loose and the laborers must scramble for shelter up in the oak trees. As the specter of the beast looms below, they share bread and wine, memories and dreams, the history of the landscape, and struggles past and present. We enter a long night, where nature also speaks. The fiery wind that brings the heatwave, is burning.
The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly and Edward McCarry of Cinema Guild with Clarão Companhia.
'Mateus is a rare filmmaker, one whose deep sense of form, language, gesture, and poetry is inseparable from her political commitment to the working class of her home region,' McCarry said in a statement. 'Her first feature heralds an essential vision in contemporary film. We are very proud to be releasing it in the cinema.'
Cinema Guild's other upcoming releases include Matías Piñeiro's You Burn Me, Shinji Somai's Love Hotel, Hong Sangsoo's By the Stream and What Does That Nature Say to You, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich's The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire, and the films of João César Monteiro. Recent past releases include Hong Sangsoo's A Traveler's Needs and Somai's Moving.

Sydney Sweeney has no fear of filming nude scenes as she highlights body transformation for role

Sydney Sweeney has no fear of acting in the nude. "I don't get nervous," the 27-year-old actress recently told W Magazine. "I think that the female body is a very powerful thing. And I'm telling my character's story, so I owe it to them to tell it well and to do what needs to be done." Sweeney appeared nude in both the first season of "Euphoria" and in the 2021 thriller "The Voyeurs." While Sweeney has been outspoken about her choice to film nude and how it relates to female empowerment, she claimed nobody took her seriously in "Euphoria" because she "got naked." "With 'The White Lotus,' I felt like people were finally recognizing the hard work I've been doing. This is something that has bothered me for a while," Sweeney told The Independent in 2022. "I'm very proud of my work in 'Euphoria.' I thought it was a great performance. But no one talks about it because I got naked. I do 'The White Lotus' and all of a sudden critics are paying attention. I was like, 'Did you not see that in 'Euphoria?' Did you not see that in 'The Handmaid's Tale'?" Sweeney further explained at the time that she believes there is "a stigma against actresses who get naked on screen." "When a guy has a sex scene or shows his body, he still wins awards and gets praise. But the moment a girl does it, it's completely different," she said. Sweeney has proven her commitment to telling a character's story, even gaining 30 pounds for her role as Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. "I loved it. I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training," Sweeney explained to W magazine. "I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour." "My body was completely different," she added. "I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong." Sweeney's work ethic while filming the Martin biopic was praised by the film's co-writer and director. "Martin put female boxing on the map in the mid-'90s," David Michôd explained. "She was the first woman fighter on the cover of Sports Illustrated and fought on the Mike Tyson undercard. Her husband was also her trainer, and then, after her success, he tried to murder her. Our film is a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga." "Sydney trained her butt off to play the part," he continued. "The beauty of Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go. No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine." Sweeney had to drop the weight she gained for the Martin biopic in just seven weeks as "Euphoria" finally picked up filming for the highly-anticipated season three. "I hadn't ever seen her in 'Euphoria,'" Michôd told the outlet. "I FaceTimed with her the other day when Sydney was in the makeup truck for the show, and I was stunned by the change in her appearance." "I had only seen her as an adorable, tough moppet with late-'80s hair, ready to box," he explained. "Sydney was happiest when she was in the ring punching and being punched. It was shocking to see her being so glamorous." Sweeney addressed negative comments she had received about her appearance while filming the Martin story head-on via social media. In December 2024, Sweeney posted a video montage on Instagram featuring a number of cruel comments about her look for the film. "Nothing to see here other than an average chunky Yankee girl," one user had written. "Too pale," another wrote. "And she needs to lose a few pounds around the middle." The end of Sweeney's video featured the actress working out in the gym, lifting heavy weights and training in a boxing ring. A sign read, "Just Don't Quit."

THE DISH: Wool Growers makes LA Times list of best restaurants in state

Bakersfield is back in the spotlight this week thanks to Wool Growers Restaurant. The longtime Basque eatery was named to the Los Angeles Times' 101 Best California Restaurants list. Restaurant critic Bill Addison doesn't mince words in reducing Bakersfield down culinarily to its rich Basque history. He writes that he passes through the area at least once a year, hitting up a couple of Basque spots to debate which sets the bar since the original Noriega Hotel, a James Beard Award-winning restaurant, closed in 2020. Addison gives the edge to the East 19th Street restaurant that has been in operation since 1954. He notes the fried chicken is a little juicier and more roundly garlicky, that meat tumbles off the bone in the hearty oxtail stew and the vinegar of the sliced pickled tongue "twangs like Parker Posey's North Carolina accent in 'The White Lotus.'" Salt is needed on the fries to make them great by his standards. (The hot salsa served with the opening courses also works well with the potatoes with fewer health concerns for diners, in my opinion.) Atmosphere and staff also earn his praise:" ... The beige floral wallpaper and the plastic table coverings over white tablecloths woozily blur the time-space continuum. I don't know quite where or when I am, but the friendly, fast-moving staff always seems glad I'm here." The critic also briefly acknowledges Pyrenees Cafe and The Sinking Ship for providing "outlandish, pirate-themed bliss." Two other Central Valley restaurants made the list: the new American-style spot Saizon in Fresno and Mi Ranchito Cafe in Stockton. Visit for the complete list. Additions for Father's Day Special offers and menus continue to be announced right up until the holiday. Here are a few that didn't make the list shared earlier this week. Bonnaroo 2025 Canceled Due to Severe Weather: ‘We Are Beyond Gutted'

After issuing an evacuation notice to attendees earlier Friday (June 13), the remainder of the 2025 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has now been canceled due to severe weather. The Manchester, Tennessee, festival shared the news on social media around 7:30 p.m. local time Friday, saying that the updated forecast was showing unsustainable conditions for on-site campers as heavy thunderstorms ripped through the area. More from Billboard Bonnaroo Tells Attendees to Evacuate As Severe Weather Approaches Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Head to Florida for Stanley Cup Final Twenty One Pilots Drop New Single, 'The Contract,' Detail North American Tour Dates 'Today, the National Weather Service provided us with an updated forecast with significant and steady precipitation that will produce deteriorating camping and egress conditions in the coming days,' the statement reads. 'We are beyond gutted, but we must make the safest decision and cancel the remainder of Bonnaroo. We are going to make things right with you, and you will find refund information at the end of this message, but let's start with the next steps.' The message goes on to suggest that any campers whose sites are in decent shape or who are safely inside an RV consider camping overnight to prioritize evacuating those festivalgoers in the roughest situations. 'The number one thing we need from the Bonnaroo community is patience,' the message reads. 'Some of your fellow campers' sites are in rough shape. The rain has settled in areas and made certain parts of Outeroo difficult to manage. We'd like to prioritize getting those folks as well as those with accessibility needs off The Farm as soon as possible this evening. To do this, we ask that if your campsite is in good shape or if you're in an RV or pre-pitched accommodation, please consider spending the night with us and we'll start working to get you out of here safely tomorrow.' The festival wrapped its message by reiterating how 'crushed' organizers are to make this decision. 'We have put our hearts and souls into making this weekend the most special one of the year, and cannot express how crushed we are to have to make this decision. Thank you in advance for your patience, your positivity and your unfailing Bonnaroovian spirit.' As promised, the post ends with refund details, spelling out what tickets and parking passes will be refunded in full and what will be returned in part since Thursday's day 1 went off without a hitch. Find the full refund details in the second slide below: Bonnaroo kicked off Thursday with performances from Luke Combs, Dom Dolla, Insane Clown Posse and Rebecca Black. Friday night's headliners were scheduled to be Tyler, The Creator, John Summit and Glass Animals; Saturday's lineup was led by Olivia Rodrigo, Avril Lavigne and Justice; and Sunday would have wrapped up with Hozier, Vampire Weekend and Queens of the Stone Age.
