State Street Global Advisors Research Examines Investors' Risk Awareness Amid Market Volatility
BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--State Street Global Advisors, the asset management business of State Street Corporation (NYSE: STT), today released its ETFs in Focus Study: Risk Management Attitudes & Behaviors and its ETF Impact Report 2025-2026.
'As the market absorbs tariff impacts and ongoing uncertainty, questions around risk, diversification, and access to liquid, flexible investment tools are front and center,' said Anna Paglia, chief business officer at State Street Global Advisors.
The study is part of State Street Global Advisors ETF Impact series, which was created to explore the evolving role of ETFs in portfolio construction, risk perceptions, and investor behavior. Conducted annually since 2022, this applied research provides deep insights into the ETF landscape, identifying key trends shaping portfolio decisions.
Market conditions have forced investors to adapt quickly and remain versatile during a time of extreme volatility. This new research examines how investors are managing risk, navigating uncertainty, and adapting to macroeconomic and market shifts. It also examines the more prominent role alternative investments are playing in portfolios, especially among financial advisors seeking to reduce clients' exposure to public markets and diversify portfolios.
'As the market absorbs tariff impacts and ongoing uncertainty, questions around risk, diversification, and access to liquid, flexible investment tools are front and center,' said Anna Paglia, chief business officer at State Street Global Advisors. 'Our research addresses key questions about portfolio resilience.'
Tariffs and Trade Wars Top the List of Perceived Portfolio Risks Pre-Liberation Day
The ETFs in Focus study found that just prior to the president's tariff announcement which sent markets tumbling, just over half (55%) of investors say they felt informed about the risk to their portfolios.
Furthermore, despite all the talk about inflation, the study found that even before Liberation Day, tariffs and trade wars were perceived to be the greatest risk to portfolios in the coming 12-18 months among all investor types surveyed: self-directed, hybrid and advised. Self-directed investors were the most worried at 47%, followed by advised at 44% and hybrid at 37%. Fear over unexpected inflation was more subdued compared to fear over tariffs, with 33% of self-directed investors showing concern about rising prices, and 35% of hybrid and advised.
ETFs Prevail as Essential Portfolio Building Blocks
The study also confirms what research in recent years has shown: investors still see ETFs as essential portfolio building blocks during times of volatility. That sentiment is strongest among individual investors with more than $250,000 in investable assets: 65% agree that ETFs help improve overall performance — a significant jump from 59% in 2022. The uptick in the percentage of investors who believe ETFs make them a better investor is also notable, jumping to 62% from 54% last year.
Investors Differ In Their Approach to Risk
Not all investors are alike when it comes to their preferred strategy for managing risk, but most are sticking to time-tested approaches that have been known to prevail in the long-term. While many are taking a more traditional approach in their asset allocation and making sure they're diversified, others are doing nothing, preferring not to make any sudden moves in anticipation of changing market conditions.
Overall, nearly half of all investors are managing risk in their portfolios by taking the traditional approach of 'avoiding high-risk investments' and/or 'diversification.' Over a third are also managing risk by "holding cash or cash equivalents.'
Alternative Investments Are Top Risk Management Strategy Used by Advisors
The study reveals two clear strategies are emerging in how financial advisors are helping clients navigate perceived threats: the use of alternatives and the use of cash. Notably, just as many are likely to use alternative investment strategies as they are to hold cash amid the uncertainty.
When it comes to alternatives, half of financial advisors are 'allocating to alternative investments/strategies' to manage portfolio risk. And 79% 'plan to increase their allocation to alternative ETF strategies' over the next year or so. Since 2022, alternative ETF assets under management have grown from $27.58 billion to $148.81 billion by the end of 2024. 1
When it comes to cash, nearly half (47%) are 'increasing allocation to cash or cash equivalents' and/or performing 'diversification across asset classes.'
The two drivers that rise to the top as having a significant influence on financial advisors' decision to incorporate or increase allocation of alternative investments/strategies into their clients' portfolios are "reduce exposure to public markets' and 'alternative sources of return.'
This is not surprising as we see the acceptance of a 60/40 portfolio continue to wane. At the same time, alternatives are becoming less 'alternative,' as investors continue to look for asset classes and strategies that offer lower correlations, help diversify beyond stocks and bonds, and help manage risk.
In fact, one of the driving forces behind increased allocations to alternatives is investor demand. The study found that millennials, in particular, are pushing this trend forward with over two-thirds (69%) investing in alternatives compared to 56% of Gen X investors and 46% of Baby Boomers.

Why KKR Stock Rocketed Almost 5% Higher Today
A top institutional investor was aiming to sell but is now backing off from that plan, according to a media report. This sharply increased confidence in the veteran investment company's stock. 10 stocks we like better than KKR › The equity of sturdy investment company KKR (NYSE: KKR) made for a fine investment all its own on Tuesday. Its stock price leaped by nearly 5% that trading session, thanks to news of a big institutional investor's reversal on a planned sale (which likely would have pushed the stock's price down). KKR's share gain easily beat the slightly over 1% advance of the S&P 500 index. That sizable investor is China Investment Corporation (CIC), the country's sovereign wealth fund. Before market open, Bloomberg, citing unidentified "people familiar with the deal," reported that CIC has canceled a planned sale of several stakes it held in U.S. investment management companies. This list included top names in the sector -- in addition to KKR, positions in Carlyle Group and TPG were to be sold. The sell-off was planned earlier this year as a move to reduce exposure to U.S. businesses. However, at present CIC is no longer interested in such a divestment. The financial news agency didn't cite any reason or reasons for this. U.S. investment bank Evercore was recruited by CIC to broker the sale, Bloomberg and another, earlier article from Reuters stated. Neither China Investment nor Evercore responded to Bloomberg's requests for comment on the matter. Similarly, KKR, Carlyle Group, and TPG haven't yet made official statements regarding it, either. A foreign investor getting cold feet about selling U.S. equities is entirely plausible; earlier this year the world grew increasingly worried that the "punitive" tariffs initially imposed by the Trump administration would damage the U.S. economy. Those concerns are fading quickly, so potential sellers like CIC might be feeling more confident about our country's growth prospects. I wouldn't buy or sell any stock purely on the basis of an institutional investor's move, so I firmly believe folks should hold or ditch KKR entirely on its fundamentals. Given that, it's a wily, veteran company that plies its trade very effectively -- and to me, therefore, is always a consideration for a buy. Before you buy stock in KKR, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the for investors to buy now… and KKR wasn't one of them. This growth stock just crashed 35%! Time to buy it for my Stocks and Shares ISA?
One growth stock stuck out like a sore thumb when I opened my Stocks and Shares ISA watchlist yesterday (23 June). That was Hims & Hers Health (NYSE: HIMS), which was down almost 35%, registering it's worst-ever day. This is a share I've been watching for a while, but haven't bought yet. Even after yesterday's crash, it's still up 86% over 12 months. Could this crash be an opportune time for me to nip in and open a position? Hims & Hers is a vertically integrated pharmacy and telehealth platform focused on personalised wellness. It offers prescription and over-the-counter treatments for hair loss, mental health, skincare, sexual health, and more. In 2024, the firm's revenue soared 69% year on year to $1.5bn. However, this isn't a jam-tomorrow growth story, because both net income and free cash flow more than quadrupled in Q1 of this year. Subscribers grew 38% to 2.4m. Driving some of this eye-catching growth has been compounded GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which the firm began selling on its platform in 2024. In May, it announced a partnership with pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk to sell its blockbuster Wegovy treatment. Since that announcement, Hims & Hers stock has been rocketing. Until yesterday that is, when Novo terminated the collaboration. In a statement, the firm pulled no punches, accusing Hims of 'illegal mass compounding and deceptive marketing'. It used the words 'knock-off drugs' a number of times in relation to 'personalised' doses of semaglutide that Hims continues to sell. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy. More seriously, Novo alleges that potentially unsafe active ingredients are being sourced from foreign suppliers in China, thereby putting patients at risk. Essentially then, there are three allegations here: The continued selling of copycat versions of Wegovy, which Novo says violates regulations. Deceptive marketing of these as 'personalised' treatments. Semaglutide sourced from unapproved Chinese suppliers. In response, Hims' CEO Andrew Dudum wrote on X: 'We refuse to be strong-armed by any pharmaceutical company's anticompetitive demands that infringe on the independent decision making of providers and limit patient choice.' Dudum said Novo's management is 'misleading the public', and that the platform will continue offering access to different weight-loss treatments, including semaglutide. What to make of all this? Well, there could obviously be regulatory compliance risk here. Lawsuits appear inevitable, and there's likely at least some brand damage. Meanwhile, Novo will keep selling Wegovy with two of Hims' rivals, namely Ro and LifeMD. So the firm could lose share in the booming weight-loss space, which isn't ideal. However, there's more to the platform than just Wegovy. It was already growing strongly before GLP-1s, and its opportunity to aggregate demand in some very large health categories appears undimmed to me. It's also expanding into Europe via a recent acquisition. Hims' disruptive direct-to-consumer platform aims to be cheaper and more personalised than the traditional healthcare model. Therefore, I think shareholders should expect further industry resistance, like Uber got from taxi firms. I'd like management to reassure investors about the supply chain accusations. Ideally, this will happen when the firm reports Q2 earnings in August, if not before. But if the stock keeps falling in the coming days, I will open a starter position.
