Ruben Amorim issues call to arms after Man Utd's ‘disaster season'

Yahoo25-05-2025

The 2024-25 season at Manchester United has been a story of acrimony and asset stripping, chaos and division, incompetence and infighting. At times, it has felt like it has not just been the future of managers, executives, players and – for a brief while – even the club's Premier League status at stake but its heart and soul, too.
The club's worst season for more than half a century has tested the patience of supporters like few before it. It has sapped the morale and energy of a staff that have watched hundreds of colleagues lose their jobs. It has raised serious questions about those running the ship. It left the head coach to declare his team may be the worst in United's 147-year history. And it exposed the weak underbelly of far too many players who have not been good enough for far too long.
The best news is it is finally over, save for the small matter of a post-season tour of Asia, to which Ruben Amorim and his squad flew off on Sunday night, but not before a call-to-arms from the manager.

Amorim had revealed beforehand his intention to apologise to supporters for what he termed a 'disaster season', but his post-match address on the Old Trafford pitch also included a plea for the entire club to pull together after one of the most divisive years in its modern history.
'I know it was really hard to support us in many games but now we have to make a choice or we stay stuck in the past because this season is in the past, it's over,' he said. 'We fight each other or we stick together and move forward.
'Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said the storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you the good days are coming. If there is one club in the world that proves in the past that it can overcome any situation, any disaster, it's our club, it's Manchester United.'
The performance and 2-0 victory against Aston Villa was a start. If there had been more games like this, United would not have finished as low as 15th, although this has been a season of such small mercies that there was a certain relief at the club that they scraped above the 40-point mark and avoided the ignominy of finishing 17th.

From the first whistle to the last, United were the better team, even before the Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was sent off for charging out of the penalty area and body-checking Rasmus Hojlund NFL-style on the cusp of half-time.
As frustrated as Villa were by referee Thomas Bramall's controversial decision to penalise Morgan Rogers for a foul on the United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir in the 72nd minute, two late goals from Amad Diallo and a penalty for Christian Eriksen were the least the hosts deserved.
But there were also reminders of what Amorim was getting at when he talked about the need for unity. Before kick-off and again at half-time, dozens of angry fans in the lower south stand protested in front of the directors' box.
With those supporters brandishing posters and banners bearing words such as 'no loyalty', 'no compassion', 'greed', 'exploitation' and 'seats and soul for sale', the United hierarchy were left in no doubt about the extent of opposition to plans to relocate fans to make way for VIP hospitality next season.
Many of those supporters have sat in those same seats for years but now face 'eviction', as they call it. At the same time, hundreds of fans – led by the 1958 group – marched down Sir Matt Busby Way outside the ground with banners and flares to challenge '20 years of theft and lies'. During the game, chants of 'We want Glazers out' reverberated from the Stretford End.
The fanbase is fractured and at odds with the club over so many matters and, on the pitch, Amorim has much to sort during a summer in which he admitted for the first time that United's transfer activity will be 'limited' to an extent by the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
Alejandro Garnacho was omitted from the match-day squad after being informed the previous day by Amorim at a squad meeting that he should find a new club. Garnacho joined the rest of his United team-mates in a lap of appreciation after the game and brief chants of 'Viva Garnacho' could be heard emanating from one corner before he eventually disappeared down the tunnel.
But it would be of surprise to no one if the Argentina forward has played his final game for the club. Napoli, who like Chelsea tried and failed to sign the player in January, are one of the interested parties. Amorim was coy when quizzed on the 20-year-old's future. 'He is one more player of Manchester United,' the United manager said. 'I don't know what is going to happen in the future.'
Three players who are definitely going are Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans, all of whom will be released when their contracts expire next month and who were applauded as they said their farewells at the end.
A big summer lies in wait. It seems to have been that way every summer for over a decade but it has never felt truer now. Amorim will hope the healing process starts here.

Pep Guardiola issues four-word demand to Manchester City bosses over transfer plans

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has issued a clear demand to his colleagues in recruitment positions over their summer transfer window activity. It's going to be a busy summer of transfer dealings at the Etihad Stadium as club officials look to trim the wage bill by parting ways with current players who have failed to live up to expectations and recruit four to five new signings. Advertisement Jack Grealish is expected to leave the club this summer and there is interest in John Stones as the 31-year-old enters the final year of his contract, with Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips also expected to seal permanent exits ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Kevin De Bruyne played his final game in a Manchester City shirt on the last day of the Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage – and the Belgium international is expected to be soon announced as a new Napoli player after agreeing a two-year contract with the recently-crowned Serie A winners. Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has outlined the club's ambitions of completing their major transfer business in time for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign, with Grealish set to be left out of the squad to complete what now seems an inevitable exit. Advertisement City have reached a full agreement with AC Milan to sign Tijjani Reijnders and are in direct talks with Lyon and Wolves for the signings of Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri respectively – with both deals expected to be completed in the coming week. Speaking to ESPN during the international break, Pep Guardiola was quizzed on what sort of additions he felt would be needed in his Manchester City squad in order to get the club back to their desired levels from next season. 'Always the same: Give me good players. The rest, it doesn't matter,' Guardiola insisted. 'The good players can adapt and adjust,' he continued. 'We will adapt the movement or tactics or whatever things we say as managers for the quality of the players. Advertisement 'And especially (give me) players that go to Anfield, go to (Real) Madrid, the (Santiago) Bernabéu, Barcelona, Camp Nou or wherever and say: 'Okay, I'm going to play my best'. That is the difference, the top players have that.' Guardiola added while speaking in his role as an investor in a medical centre focused on personalised healthcare, Monarka Clinic: 'But we are not adjusting for the fact that we (had a tough season). If we win, I don't have to adjust anything? That is a mistake. 'When you win, you also have to adjust things. Day by day, game by game, week by week (you adjust). Of course we are going to adjust some things, but not for the fact that we just won the Community Shield.'

Chelsea working on deal to beat Liverpool to striker target

Chelsea Push Ahead in Ekitike Race as Liverpool Assess Options Premier League giants pursue Eintracht Frankfurt striker amid growing transfer urgency Chelsea have accelerated their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and are currently working on a verbal agreement regarding personal terms, according to Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg. The Blues intend to follow that up with more formal negotiations with the Bundesliga side in the coming days. The French forward has attracted strong interest from both Chelsea and Liverpool, with the latter exploring attacking reinforcements as part of a multi-pronged summer rebuild. However, Chelsea's more aggressive stance in recent days has seen them move ahead in the queue. Photo IMAGO Advertisement Frankfurt are said to be demanding €100 million (£84 million) for Ekitike, a figure both Premier League clubs would be reluctant to meet in full. Chelsea, however, are reportedly hopeful of negotiating the fee down to approximately €77 million (£65 million). Chelsea's striker strategy takes shape Despite already completing the £30 million signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, Chelsea remain determined to recruit a second centre-forward. The club views Ekitike as a potential first-choice option, someone who could immediately start ahead of Delap in Enzo Maresca's attacking setup. Photo IMAGO Should both Delap and Ekitike arrive this summer, there may be movement elsewhere in the squad. Nicolas Jackson's future is under discussion, with the suggestion that Manchester United could be preparing a move for the Senegal international. Photo: IMAGO Chelsea's push comes amid a broader squad overhaul at Stamford Bridge, where multiple senior players are expected to depart. Bringing in Ekitike would signal a long-term commitment to building a young, dynamic attack, one aligned with the club's strategic recruitment model. Liverpool's stance shaped by potential outgoings Liverpool also admire Ekitike, but their approach appears more cautious. The Anfield hierarchy are unlikely to make a concrete move without first offloading Darwin Núñez, who continues to attract interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia. Photo: IMAGO With Alexander Isak deemed unattainable this summer, Ekitike has risen on Liverpool's shortlist. However, the Merseyside club have other priorities at present, including completing deals for Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz. The club are also monitoring left-wing options, particularly with ongoing uncertainty over Luis Díaz's future. Photo IMAGO Ekitike scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in a standout campaign for Frankfurt and is widely viewed as one of Europe's most promising young strikers. The player is understood to be open to a move, with Frankfurt granting him the green light to leave — but only on their terms. Ekitike pursuit could go late into window While Chelsea appear to have taken the initiative, sources believe this transfer could remain active deep into the summer. If Frankfurt soften their stance or if Liverpool are able to generate funds through player sales, the dynamic could yet shift. For now, Chelsea lead the race. But Liverpool, patient and pragmatic, are not out of it.

Pep Guardiola admits difficult truth on Manchester City's 2024/25 season

Pep Guardiola has opened up on the challenges Manchester City faced in his most difficult season in charge at the Etihad Stadium. It's been a campaign like none previously for Guardiola in Manchester, with his City side struggling uncharacteristically and failing to mount a challenge for the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and losing in the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace. Advertisement Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak recently admitted the club were wrong to not have acted as aggressively in last summer's transfer window as they should have, which will only fuel the fire in their belly in get it right this time round. Kevin De Bruyne was told in early April he was not part of the club's plans for the 2025-26 campaign and the 33-year-old has agreed a two-year move to Napoli, who are set to announce the signing of the Belgium international. City are set to shift their focus onto the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States and Al Mubarak has declared the Blues are in it to win it as they look to kick-start their preparations for the new season. Advertisement Guardiola has pointed to mounting injuries and inconsistency in performances to explain Manchester City's slump this term, with several key players losing form and the squad collectively failing to meet the incredible standards they've set for themselves over the years under Guardiola. In an interview with SPORT, Guardiola had the chance to discuss the trials and tribulations of Manchester City's recent campaign, which the Catalan has deemed to be the most difficult year he has faced throughout his managerial career. 'The season has been difficult, a tough year. We struggled a lot in the Champions League, we weren't solid or consistent,' the Catalan said. 'We've achieved the most important title, which is qualification for the Champions League; it's more important in England than some titles. Advertisement 'It's becoming more complicated, as seven, eight, or nine teams can qualify (for the UEFA Champions League). We finished on a high note and it's now time for the Club World Cup, where we're in good shape, with the idea of going through the rounds and seeing.' Guardiola will be heavily backed in the summer transfer window as incoming sporting director Hugo Viana conducts an audit of the first-team and eyes four to five first-team signings to get Manchester City back challenging on all fronts next season. Manchester City are closing in on the signings of Lyon's Rayan Cherki, AC Milan's Tijjani Reijnders and Wolves' Rayan Ait-Nouri to begin their summer overhaul and a mass exodus will see several current first-team players exit the club in the coming months.
