The Philadelphia 76ers are entering the 2025–26 season with uncertainty clouding their cornerstone star, Joel Embiid. After finishing last season with a brutal 24–58 record, largely due to injury-plagued absences from Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, the spotlight now shifts to the future of their 31-year-old MVP center.
While the team hopes for a bounce-back year, one respected NBA analyst believes Embiid might be nearing the end of his playing days.
Keith Pompey raises serious doubts about Joel Embiid's future
Joel Embiid's injury history has never been a secret. Since being drafted in 2014, he has missed a staggering 400 games due to a range of issues — from foot fractures and knee surgeries to facial injuries and back strains. What's changed now is how openly he's begun to speak about the toll it has taken on him.
'The way I was playing a year ago, it's not the way I'm playing right now. It sucks,' Embiid said during an emotional moment last season. 'But I believe... I probably need to fix the problem and then I'll be back at that level, but it's hard to have trust when you're not yourself. It's tough. You know you can do so much more.'
That level of transparency alarmed longtime 76ers reporter Keith Pompey. Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Pompey said, 'I think Joel (Embiid) might know the end is near… Rarely do you have a guy tell you how much pain he's in and how much they're going through.'

Pompey asserted that this wasn't inside information, but rather his interpretation of Embiid's comments and the tone of a recent ESPN feature.
Though Pompey admitted, 'I could be wrong. He could come out and have another MVP season,' his remarks reflected a growing concern shared by fans and analysts alike — that Embiid, despite his dominance, may not be able to withstand the physical grind much longer.
Philadelphia 76ers are looking to come back stronger
While Tyrese Maxey and Paul George are on track to return healthy, Embiid's status could significantly shape the 76ers' future roster decisions.
The team has said they expect him back for training camp, but questions remain.
So far, it is unclear if this is the beginning of the end or just another chapter in Embiid's rollercoaster career. It is fair to say that his availability will define Philadelphia's trajectory next season and beyond.

Who is Jayson Tatum's girlfriend? Meet singer Ella Mai, the rumored mother of NBA star's child

Ella Mai may be best known for her breakout hit 'Boo'd Up,' but over the past few years, she's also gained attention for her rumored relationship with Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum. The NBA superstar and Grammy-winning R&B singer have spent years dodging public scrutiny about their relationship. Despite their silence, their ongoing presence in each other's lives has made headlines many times over the years, from the early rumors in 2020 to Olympic sightings with their alleged child in 2024. Their romance may have unfolded mostly behind the scenes, but fans have managed to piece together a surprisingly detailed picture of their relationship. Clues, concerts, and carefully timed appearances Their connection didn't begin with a red carpet debut; it started with overlapping locations and raised eyebrows. In late 2020, viewers noticed Mai livestreaming from a space that looked a lot like Tatum's home, per People. That sparked speculation, but it wasn't the first sign. Months earlier, Tatum had reportedly flown to see Mai perform after a Celtics game. By 2022, they stopped trying to hide altogether. The pair attended Michael Rubin's White Party in the Hamptons and were later spotted at a Coney Island concert. When Tatum brought Mai to teammate Marcus Smart's wedding the next year, guests caught them singing and dancing to her own hit, 'Boo'd Up.' Clearly, she wasn't just a date—she was part of the circle. Olympic cheerleading, baby news, and matching ink Per the publication, Mai showed up courtside in 2024 for some of Tatum's biggest moments, including his NBA title win and Team USA's gold medal match in Paris. The quiet scenes of Mai holding a newborn in a video further hinted at something more personal. Later that summer, Page Six confirmed she and Tatum had welcomed a child. Though the pair didn't make an announcement, a clever Amica Insurance ad showed Tatum juggling dad duties, while a closing shot of three sneakers—adult, child, and baby—drove the message home. More recently, the couple got matching tattoos behind their ears: a tiny '3' meant to symbolize Mai's November 3rd birthday. Tatum has also been spotted with 'Deuce' and 'Dylan' written on his sneakers, possibly revealing the name of their second child.

LeBron James isn't thrilled about deepfake videos of him, and his legal team is taking action

NBA stars like LeBron James are no strangers to memes and viral internet content about their lives being circulated online. However, a new trend of people creating deepfake videos has recently cropped up, and as per AI platform FlickUp's founder Jason Stacks, the Los Angeles Lakers player is not that thrilled about it. LeBron James is not happy about people making deepfake videos of him.(AP) Cease-and-desist letter In a recent Instagram reel, Stacks revealed that James's legal team had issued him a cease-and-desist letter in lieu of the deepfake content being created using his platform. 'This is a letter from one of the biggest NBA players of all time. Two months ago, I launched the YouTube of AI video. It was a fun idea to help creators make some more money. But then people started noticing … Like this guy, yeah, LeBron James. And he wasn't happy, because I got this cease-and-desist from his team,' says Stacks. "I'm so f**ked 😭,' he wrote in the caption. This is in reference to multiple deepfake videos created by online users, including one where James is pregnant with Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry's baby. Former teammate speaks in support James's former teammate Richard Jefferson spoke up in support of the player's attempt to remove content potentially harmful to his image during a recent appearance on the Road Trippin' podcast. We see the value in name, image, and likeness,' he claimed. 'This is one of the issues with AI. All of a sudden, videos depicting whatever you want. They're saying whatever you want. Think for all human beings, what people are doing isn't a positive thing. Kendrick Perkins, Jefferson's co-host, also spoke up on the matter. 'If it is true that LeBron and his team are sending out those cease and desists and stopping that s***, I'm all for it,' he said. 'You have one name. Protect that m*********** name!' This is one of many efforts of James's legal team to take charge of his online narrative and address issues concerning the illicit use of famous personalities. It also points out the dangers of the unregulated use of such technology. By Stuti Gupta

Stephen Curry gets real about his ‘surreal' friendship with the Obamas

NBA and American politics haven't always been the most interconnected of worlds, but when they do meet, they have proven to deliver beautiful friendships in return. One such example would be the close bond Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry shares with former President Barack Obama and his family. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry opened up on his bond with the Obama family.(AP) Stephen Curry opens up on close bond with the Obama family During a recent appearance on 360 With Speedy, Curry opened up on his bond with the Obama family while discussing the launch of Plezi: a flavored drink company run by him in collaboration with former First Lady Michelle Obama. When asked if he shares a close relationship with them, Curry replied, 'As you can imagine, there are uh there are levels to what it means to be a part of the Obama family. But they're accessible. Let's put it that way." 'The friendship is there. The mentorship is there. President Obama's been an unbelievable voice for me in terms of certain things. I can just call him, ask him a question. He's always hyping me up on the court and to have now something that we get to do with Michelle, something that she's passionate about for a while. It has taken her time to develop a product, and she stands behind it.' It's still surreal to even talk like that, but those are good people to be partners with. For sure. They are amazing people, and it's been cool to get to know them over the years,' he added. Barack Obama's association with basketball During his time in office, President Obama was a huge fan of the sport himself. He would frequently host private games at the White House featuring some of the best players in the league. He was an ardent supporter who encouraged the sport and shared a close relationship with many players, Curry being one of them. By Stuti Gupta
