Warren Buffett's 'vital' tip for valuating companies before you invest, says 'don't have to be an expert'
Synopsis Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor, emphasized long-term investments in businesses with enduring competitive advantages. He advises focusing on companies within one's "circle of competence," prioritizing long-term earnings growth over short-term performance. Buffett's successful investments in See's Candies and Coca-Cola exemplify this approach. In a 1996 letter to shareholders, Warren Buffett gave a vital tip for valuating companies before investing. AP Warren Buffet urged investors to stick to a 'circle of competence,' investing only in businesses they fully understand Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, revered for turning Berkshire Hathaway into a global powerhouse, is known for his emphasis on long-term investments. He focuses on businesses that he believes will maintain a competitive edge for decades to come and credits his success to discipline. Buffett's investment decisions are rooted in the longevity of a business, not its current performance. 'You don't have to be an expert on every company, or even many," he wrote in a 1996 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. "You only have to be able to evaluate companies within your circle of competence. The size of that circle is not very important; knowing its boundaries, however, is vital.' Here's why In his 1996 letter to shareholders Buffett wrote, "Put together a portfolio of companies whose aggregate earnings march upward over the years, and so also will the portfolio's market value. If you aren't willing to own a stock for ten years, don't even think about owning it for ten minutes."According to a report in Investopedia, Warren Buffet urged investors to stick to a 'circle of competence,' investing only in businesses they fully understand. "Your goal as an investor should simply be to purchase, at a rational price, a part interest in an easily-understandable business whose earnings are virtually certain to be materially higher five, 10, and 20 years from now," Buffett wrote in the 1996 letter. Warren Buffett bases his investment choices on a company's long-term potential rather than its short-term performance. This philosophy guided his decision to invest in See's Candies in 1972 and Coca-Cola in 1988—both of which became highly profitable holdings that remain in his portfolio to this day.'Buffett's style keeps you focused on what the business does and why it matters," Pamela Sams, a financial advisor at Jackson Sams Wealth Strategies, told Investopedia. "That's how you avoid mistakes and busted portfolios."'People chase trends or fall for flashy numbers, but Buffett knows that revenue is meaningless if expenses are out of control, and leadership is critical for success,' Sams cited Apple Inc. as a key example: Although Buffett initially steered clear of tech stocks, viewing them as beyond his expertise, he eventually recognized that Apple had cultivated unmatched customer loyalty and a durable brand. To him, it became less of a tech company and more of a consumer staple.

Crowd survey begins at Kainchi Dham week after Haridwar stampede
1 2 3 4 5 6 Dehradun/Haridwar: A crowd capacity survey began at Kainchi Dham in Nainital district to assess daily footfall and vehicle load, days after a stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple killed nine people and injured 45. The tourism department launched the exercise to prevent similar incidents during peak seasons and festivals, when many popular religious sites see overwhelming crowds. Tourism officials said Kainchi Dham was selected as the first location for the pilot study due to its consistently high footfall, especially in June during the annual bhandara in memory of Neem Karoli Baba. The temple draws lakhs of devotees annually and was already being monitored as a high-density spiritual site. The July stampede at Mansa Devi occurred on the first Monday of Shravan, a day that traditionally sees large turnouts, prompting urgent safety reviews at other key shrines. Under the new system, National Population Register (NPR) devices and CCTV cameras have been installed across the temple premises. A dedicated team is monitoring the number of devotees entering the shrine and the vehicles arriving in the area. Officials said the survey will help build a site-specific understanding of carrying capacity and guide the implementation of crowd-control strategies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Tourism department officials added that similar assessments would be conducted at other prominent shrines in Uttarakhand, including Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples in Haridwar, Purnagiri temple in Champawat, and Piran Kaliyar near Roorkee. "We've started the assessment from Kainchi Dham. The survey will determine the number of pilgrims and tourists visiting the shrine daily, as well as the volume of vehicles arriving in the area," an official said. Haridwar DM Mayur Dixit told TOI that a combination of short- and long-term measures had been rolled out at Mansa Devi temple following the stampede. "We have discussed a long-term redevelopment plan with senior officials, which includes widening of the pedestrian route and overall infrastructure upgrades at the temple. A detailed proposal has also been sent for consideration under the Kumbh Mela budget," he said. As part of immediate safety steps, all shops located within the temple complex and along the pedestrian route have been shut. A primary health centre will be built on-site to handle medical emergencies. The administration has also created a designated holding area within the premises and sealed the rear gate for routine use—it will now be used only as an emergency exit. To improve access and crowd movement, encroachments have been removed from the temple's approach routes. Authorities are also planning to install a permanent police check post in the area. The temple committee has been asked to deploy private security personnel and sanitation workers to ensure hygiene and order during busy hours. Dixit said a proposal had been submitted to repair and upgrade the hill bypass route to help manage pilgrim flow during peak seasons. He added that the entire temple and surrounding walkways would soon be brought under full CCTV surveillance for real-time crowd management and rapid emergency response. Officials said the survey results will help develop customised crowd management plans based on each site's topography and infrastructure. The goal is to ensure a safer, more organised pilgrimage experience for devotees, particularly during high-traffic days such as festivals and melas.
