Kerry FC boss Colin Healy on FAI Cup win: ‘The players will give everything they can'

Healy on Adams' 96th minute goal that sent the FAI Cup second round game between Kerry FC and Athlone Town to extra-time: 'It was a small bit of brilliance from Joe. He put it in the top corner, and sometimes you need that'
Kerryman
As the clock ticked into the seventh minute of added time at Mounthawk Park on Friday night, Kerry FC substitute Joe Adams stood over a 25-yard free-kick with his side 1-0 down and on the verge of bowing out of the Sports Direct FAI Cup at the first hurdle.
With a beautiful strike off his left peg, the net bulged, Athlone Town were shell-shocked, and it was onto extra-time. Within two minutes of the restart, Daniel Okwute had put the winner on a plate for another replacement, Kennedy Amechi, and the hosts were into the draw for the next round.

Josh Thomas strikes late as Drogheda win at Dalymount Park

A dramatic goal from substitute Josh Thomas, four minutes from time, gave Drogheda United a third consecutive 1-0 league win over Alan Reynolds' side as the visitors took the spoils after a month without a league game. Just when it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Drogheda won it as a sumptuous through ball by Conor Keeley straight down the middle picked out Thomas in the 86th minute who then outstripped the home defence and coolly put the ball past Kacper Chorazka. Drogheda had only played a single match in the last month before the visit to Dalymount, disposing of Crumlin United in the FAI Cup, having lost out in a place in the UEFA Conference league due to a club ownership conflict. Drogheda had been kicking their heels as a result and had a mid-season training camp in Spain to keep their players ticking over. However, they came back to action with a late smash and grab to severely dent Bohemians' title ambitions, as they remain seven points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers and now having played a game more than the Hoops who can go 10 points clear if they beat Derry City on Sunday evening. Crunching tackles and fouls littered the opening period as second faced fourth with Bohs four points ahead of the visitors prior to kick-off, but there were chances. Straight from the kick-off Drogheda lost possession and Dayle Rooney, inside his own half, spotted United keeper Luke Dennison off his line and his audacious effort didn't miss by much. Moments later Bohs right-back Ross Tierney was caught in possession by Dare Kareem, but Kacper Chorazka saved Kareem's effort on the edge of his six-yard box. Kareem was brought into the club in the off-season as an Under-20s player but injures, and the departure of Douglas James-Taylor to Bohemians, has seen the 19-year-old elevated to the senior squad. On the quarter hour, a ball from Bohs captain Dawson Devoy outfoxed the visitors defence and picked out Tierney all alone in the area. He looked certain to score only for Dennison to pull off a brilliant point-blank save with his leg to keep the game scoreless. A poor headed clearance from Conor Kane then fell for Drogheda centre-half Conor Keeley who turned and shot from the edge of the area, with his dipping effort just clearing the Bohs crossbar. The helter-skelter nature of the game continued after the break as both sides looked for the breakthrough goal, but a combination of poor finishing and last-ditch tackles kept the game scoreless. Jordan Flores' shot from the edge of the area came though a ruck of players and Dennison did well to get down late to save just after the hour mark. On 73 minutes, Connor Parsons delivered a cross to pick out Tierney at the back post who smashed his shot into the side netting, with many of the home support thinking it had hit the back of the net, which garnered much derision from the away supporters. Just when the game appeared to be heading for a scoreless draw, Thomas was the coolest player on the pitch, taking his time when one on one with the keeper to slot home the cheekiest of winners for Drogheda with 86 minutes on the clock. Bohemian FC: Kacper Chorazka; Niall Morahan, Cian Byrne (Keith Buckley 71), Rob Cornwall (Markuss Strods 90), Jordan Flores; Connor Parsons (Rhys Brennan 81), Dawson Devoy, Ross Tierney, Dayle Rooney; Colm Whelan (Adam McDonnell 81), James Clarke. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Andrew Quinn, Conor Keely, James Bolger (John O'Sullivan 87); Owen Lambe, Luke Heaney (Shane Farrell 77), Ryan Brennan (George Cooper 87), Daragh Markey, Conor Kane; Dare Kareem (Joshua Thomas 63), Thomas Oluwa (Warren Davis 63).

Drogheda leave it late at Dalymount to pile pressure on Bohemians

DAWSON DEVOY gave one of the great individual performances of the season, but collectively Bohemians fell short in a devastating title it was all because of Drogheda defender Conor Keeley who was in inspired form himself, keeping the Gypsies at bay time and again before teeing up the late into this Dalymount clash, Drogs were the only team that Bohs had failed to get any points off this season - and that's how it remains after drama at the as the game appeared to be heading for a scoreless draw, last season's FAI Cup winners pounced to snatch victory with four minutes to intercepted a ball to Ross Tierney on the edge of the Drogheda box and instantly played a precision pass to sub striker Josh Thomas over the halfway the on-loan Swansea City ace turned on the turbo boosters to scorch Rob Cornwall and Niall Morahan in a 40-yard foot race, before coolly slotting it was smash and grab but Drogheda's mission to frustrate and be compact served them well once again as they closed to within a point of second Bohs knew they had to make inroads on Shamrock Rovers' seven-point lead to stand any chance of forcing a title race with their arch considering the possession they enjoyed and the way Devoy pulled the strings, there's no escaping the fact this was a big opportunity missed and a costly particularly so if the league-leading Hoops stretch into a 10-point lead if they beat Derry City at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday fans still clapped their team off the pitch and particularly Devoy who was the catalyst for the Gypsies best Kareem brought early life to Drogs' attack and when Cian Byrne lost possession in the opening minutes, the big teenager fired off a shot that was Devoy took the game by the scruff of the neck and was centrally involved in almost every Bohs showed exquisite vision to spot Tierney's little run in behind the Drogheda defence but Tierney was thwarted by Luke Dennison who saved with his Drogheda won't bow down to anyone and Keeley wasn't far away from opening the scoring when he hooked an effort over the Bohs his centre-back partner-in-crime Andrew Quinn went close too, stabbing a shot at goal from close range that had Kacper Chorazka at continued to lord possession after the break but Drogs refused to bend, although penalty appeals were scuppered when Luke Heeney was booked for the other end, a neat Bohs one-two between James Clarke and Colm Whelan saw Clarke fire at goal only for man mountain Keeley to divert it off was outstanding, but so too was Keeley and yet he and the entire Drogheda defence looked on helplessly when Tierney met Connor Parsons' cross on the fans were on their feet, certain that Tierney struck it as well as he could have wished for only to see it nestle in the side netting with 17 minutes to play. And they were left to rue that squandered opportunity when Keeley set the wheels in motion for Thomas to silence Dalymount by winning it at the death.

‘True leader' and ‘real captain' – Premier League legend who bounced back from alcoholism is coming to Dublin

As cultural highlights go, there wasn't a crush of media moguls looking to buy the rights to the movie. It didn't seem like the sort of occasion that might ignite a season or a career. By then, Bergkamp was two-and-a-half years in North London but hadn't a medal to show for it. Flashes of his genius were intense, but the glare just hid the fact that they were less frequent than Arsenal needed. Tony Adams boarded the team bus, saw Bergkamp sitting alone, plonked himself down and said something that had been wandering his mind: 'You've been here two-and-a-half years, Dennis. Isn't it about time you won something? It would be a shame not to, with your ability.' Get your tickets for Indo Sport Football Live with Tony Adams and Joe Molloy on Wednesday, August 6 in Vicar Street here Bergkamp has a reputation as an even cooler social customer than he was on the pitch. He had always respected Adams though. That dated back to a friendly at Highbury with Inter Milan, not long after Bergkamp signed from the Nerazzurri. Inter captain Nicola Berti spent the game calling Bergkamp 'Beavis', after the titular character from the MTV show. Adams, as was his wont, made it clear to Berti that his afternoon wouldn't end well if he kept it up. Three months later, Arsenal had done the double. Bergkamp was crowned player of the year. His highlights reel that year are what you might describe online as footballing porn. That famous hat-trick versus Leicester and that sublime strike to beat Holland in the World Cup, the most explicit material in the Bergkamp seasonal canon. 'He was the main man,' Patrick Vieira, the man who would inherit the Arsenal captaincy, once said of Adams, 'just the way that he was standing there in the dressing room, or when he was leading the team walking through the tunnel, he was a true leader. 'He's a true leader. That's what I call a real captain, he would take all the responsibility, he's really vocal and on the field of course he's got this kind of leadership, he's driving the players, but I loved Tony and how he was in the dressing room.' ADVERTISEMENT Learn more It's an easy image to conjure of Adams, who was made captain of Arsenal at the age of 21 and held it for 14 years. It is also totally juxtaposed against the person who spent four months in HMP Chelmsford in 1990 for drink-driving. The same player who, after England were beaten in the semi-final of Euro '96 by Germany on penalties, went on a 44-day bender. Forty-four days? Even allowing for the cultural adjustment of the past 20 years, that is some stint. It started within an hour of Gareth Southgate missing his penalty on June 26 and ended on August 16. That was when he gave up alcohol. A month later, Arsène Wenger was appointed Arsenal manager. Adams commitment to sobriety was such that he once drank 27 cappuccinos at an Arsenal Christmas party having pledged to match his teammates' drink count. What is it that they say about people with extreme tendencies? Despite enjoying a wonderful renaissance under Wenger, the two fell out years later when, after some ill-fated attempts at translating all that big captain energy into management, he was turned down for a coaching role at Arsenal. Effectively, he couldn't get a job at a club that has a statue of him outside their stadium. Eaten bread, etc. Don't miss Tony Adams speaking to Joe Molloy at Indo Sport Football Live on Wednesday, August 6 in Vicar Street in association with Sky Sports.
