Cancer survivors shine with laughter in Rochester comedy show
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Cancer is 'no joke.' But young cancer survivors know the healing power of laughter.
Friday, the group '13Thirty Cancer Connect' hosted the first of two shows, appropriately titled 'Sometimes, You Just Gotta Laugh!'
The best part about it — the comedians are all teens and young adults with cancer.
Members of '13Thirty Cancer Connect' say sharing their experiences is therapeutic and empowering.
'To be able to take something so personal and turn it into something funny and make people laugh at something that wasn't laughable at that point is great,' 13Thirty Cancer Connect Comedian Michelle Hopkins said.
Comedian Todd Youngman mentors the group that has had four successful and sold-out events in Rochester and Syracuse since 2022.
He said the teen and young adult program began with four comedians and they've since grown to 13 adolescent and young adult cancer survivors and one mom.

WMBD Children programming rescheduled due to power outage
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Some children's shows that were meant to air on Saturday have been rescheduled to air during the week. The four children's shows did not air at the originally scheduled time due to a power outage. The shows have been rescheduled to air during the Family Feud 3:30 p.m. time slot from Tuesday to Friday. The new schedule will have: Tails of Valor, airing at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Did I Mention Invention?, airing at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lucky Dog Reunion, airing at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Waves of Pride among many stories shared in Holland
HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Kate Leighton-Colburn sees stories everywhere she looks. Her job is to help catalogue and preserve them for the Holland Museum. 'Very grateful to be part of this community, working in this community … that I have the opportunity to share the stories of this community,' she said. 'I love stories. I've always loved stories. I think there's always more to do, explore, more to tell.' Just like everyone, Leighton-Colburn has her own story, part of which is represented in museum's Waves of Pride exhibit. On display through the end of June, it describes the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Holland and of local advocacy organization Out On the Lakeshore. ''Holding hands on Eighth Street,'' Leighton-Colburn said, pointing to the title of one of the pieces in the exhibit. 'I love that she chose that because we always talked about when we can hold hands on 8th Street and feel safe and comfortable, we'd feel like we made it.' Waves of Pride: Holland Museum exhibit tells story of LGBTQ community She said she and her wife Marley have seen a change in their community. 'I would've been very afraid to do an interview like this, even just 10 years ago. I feel less afraid now,' Leighton-Colburn said. 'I definitely feel surrounded by love and community.' But, she said, she knows she won't feel that love from everyone. 'There's still a lot of work to do. There's still people who aren't cool with it,' she said. 'But I just try to live my life in a way that both brings me joy and brings others joy, hopefully.' List: Pride Month events in West Michigan 2025 She hopes to teach that perspective to her son Tate.
