Watch: House GOP leaders brief media as Senate grapples with ‘big, beautiful bill'

House GOP leaders held a press conference Tuesday morning as Senate Republicans rework the 'big, beautiful bill' encompassing President Trump's legislative agenda. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has urged senators not to make significant changes to the bill, which narrowly passed the House. The upper chamber does not appear inclined to follow his advice. Republican senators are torn over various aspects of the bill, including its impact on the deficit and deep cuts to programs like Medicaid and food assistance. A number of House members have also expressed concern with aspects of the bill, even though they voted for it, signaling another heavy lift for Johnson and his team when it returns to the lower chamber. Other Republicans expected to join the Speaker Tuesday were House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (La.), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (Minn), GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain (Mich.) and Rep. Gabe Evans (Colo.). Watch a video replay of the press conference above. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Doechii blasts immigration raids, protest crackdown

On Monday night, stars hit the red carpet of the BET Awards to celebrate Black excellence across music, television, sports, and film at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The Kevin Hart-hosted event was just blocks away from where Angelenos were marching against the federal immigration raids happening within the region. As the fourth day of demonstrations took place, rapper Doechii made sure to mention it in her acceptance speech when she took home the award for best hip hop artist. 'As much as I'm honored by this award, I do want to address what's happening right now outside of the building,' she told the crowd. 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order.' The 'Anxiety' singer then blasted the president and his use of the California National Guard to quell protestors. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest, and I want y'all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us,' she continued. 'What type of government is that?' She went on to explain that 'people are being swept up and torn from their families.' ' I feel it's my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people: For Black people, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza,' she added. 'We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear, and I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters, against hate and we protest against it.' The Grammy Award winner was the only celebrity to address the ongoing situation at the ceremony. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Former Baton Rouge mayor criticizes current administration in social media video

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Former Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome posted a video to social media on Monday, June 9, criticizing the current administration of Mayor-President Sid Edwards. Broome discussed the present state of Baton Rouge, but also responded to accusations that she says were made by Edwards. 'Let me be clear. We don't need coaching. We need concerted, courageous leadership and collaboration. We can't afford to leave Baton Rouge with fear and confusion and political calculation. Our city workers deserve stability. Our families deserve certainty. And our community deserves better,' Broome said. According to Broome, Edwards blamed her administration for leaving him with a financial mess. In the video, she called the comments from Edwards 'categorically false,' stating she tried to prevent the creation of the City of St. George. The former mayor-president went on to say that she offered help to the current administration, but officials have not contacted her.
