Germany OKs Eurofighter delivery to Turkey, Spiegel reports

BERLIN - The German government has cleared the way for the delivery of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey following a positive decision by the federal security council, the Spiegel news magazine reported on Wednesday.
Turkey has been in talks on buying Eurofighter Typhoon jets, which are built by a consortium of Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain, represented by companies Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.
Germany's federal security council, whose approval is required for arms exports, operates behind closed doors and the government generally does not comment on its decisions.
The German defence ministry declined to comment on the report. The economy ministry did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Earlier this week, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Germany and Britain took a positive stance on the sale of the jets, adding that Ankara wanted to finalise the purchase as soon as possible. REUTERS

The Kharkiv region, which lies near the border with Russia, has been the target of regular Russian drone and missile attacks since the start of the war. Ukraine's drone attack sparks fires in Rostov region, Russia says

There were no injuries as a result of the attack and the fire at the substation on an area of about 500 square metres (5,400 square feet) has been extinguished, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia's defence units destroyed a total of 24 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven over the Rostov region, which has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry reports only the number of downed drones, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate comment from Kyiv. Ukraine has frequently said its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine. REUTERS

Top seed Zverev was unable to convert two set points in a tight first set, but built up 3-0 leads in both the second and third sets to clinch the win in two hours and 42 minutes. The victory took the German's head-to-head record against Australian Popyrin to 4-0 and sent him to his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, joining Novak Djokovic as the only active men's tennis player to have reached the mark. "I had to tell myself, even though I lost the first set, I thought we were both playing actually quite well," said Zverev, who won the Canadian Open in 2017. "I had to find a return position in the beginning because he's a very big server, and when he gets into a rhythm, it's very difficult against him. "I did that in the second and third set. Honestly, I can't complain about much. I played one loose game on my serve in the second set, but apart from that, it was pretty good."
