Winfield posted 60 total tackles with 34 solo and two for loss with four QB hits, two sacks and a 58-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. While the Buccaneers have focused on improving one of the league's worst units from a year ago this offseason through free agency and the draft, a resurgent year from Winfield would go a long way toward the ultimate goal. Pro Football Focus named Winfield the Bucs' "bounce-back candidate" for next season. Advertisement 'Tampa Bay struggled to defend the middle of the field in 2024, due in part to injuries and a dip in production from star safety Antoine Winfield Jr", PFF said. "He posted a career-low 50.8 coverage grade and, for the first time in his career, failed to record an interception.' Winfield posted almost elite numbers in 2023, so we know the potential is there. And the ankle injury isn't expected to be a factor next season, so we could see his play return to that 2023 form. He'll turn 27 in August, so youth is still on his side. Tampa Bay is on an incredible run, tying a record four-straight NFC South titles, and has made the postseason five years running. Kelce missed virtually his entire rookie season. Since then, he had never posted a year with fewer than eight yards per target, until 2024 when that mark dropped to just 6.2. After ascending to stardom in 2016, he had never dipped below 65 yards per game until 2024, when his 823 yards came out to just 51.4 yards per game. His profile has never been higher, of course, in part because of his romance with pop icon Taylor Swift. ... a relationship that is in part the reason the subject of retirement comes up. But ... The 6-2, 341-pound Inglewood native fills an immediate need for the Cowboys as a run-stopping defensive tackle. Maybe as a backup. Maybe as something more. On Thursday at voluntary OTAs, Toia received first-team reps with the team's starters. Healthy competition is vital to a team's success to make sure players are constantly pushing each other and looking to get better. ... and maybe that's all this is. Or maybe this signifies a major change - and an admission that Dallas' major roster flaw ... run-stopping ... merits real and new answers. The former Michigan star began to show signs of growth last season, but Dallas needs more. ... and inserting Toia in the mix will - if this works out - give the Cowboys an intriguing pair of 1-technique defensive tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, Toia had his best collegiate season in 2024—posting a 69 overall grade. The trust Toia has earned from the coaching staff early in their offseason program is a positive sign. If he continues to impress, that trust could lead to reps on the field during the regular season. A scouting view? Toia's ability to battle double-team blocks with a wide base will in theory help keep linebackers Kenneth Murray Jr., Jack Sanborn, and Marist Liufau free to play downhill and defend the run. Advertisement The development of Toia and his integration into defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' scheme will be an interesting storyline to follow throughout training camp as Toia could be an underrated contributor for the Cowboys defense.
