How a café sign became a target of hate amid rising anti-LGBTQ+ violence in Berlin

Indian Express7 days ago
In a corner of Berlin, Danjel Zarte opened Das Hoven café with a dream: to create a safe, welcoming space for everyone, especially the LGBTQ+ community.
He hung a neon sign that glowed 'QUEER AND FRIENDS,' a bright beacon of acceptance in one of the city's trendiest neighbourhoods.
But instead of drawing people together, that sign has become a target for hate.
Over the last year and a half, Danjel's dream has been shattered—literally. Vandals have smashed the café's windows, smeared swastikas and even faeces on its walls, and harassed its staff. One terrifying night, a man stood outside brandishing a gun. 'It feels like an act of terror,' Danjel shared with the Associated Press.
Mornings are the hardest—he wakes up dreading his phone, fearing news of another attack. Right now, there are 45 open criminal investigations tied to the café.
This isn't just happening at Das Hoven.
Across Germany, violence against LGBTQ+ people is spiking, even in Berlin, a city long celebrated as a haven for queer folks. Last year, 12 of Germany's 16 states saw a 40 per cent jump in attacks targeting the community, according to the Association of Counseling Centers for Victims of Right-Wing, Racist and Antisemitic Violence.
And those are just the cases reported—many people stay silent, too scared to speak up.
The rise of far-right groups like the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party isn't helping. Even though one of its leaders, Alice Weidel, is openly lesbian, the party pushes anti-LGBTQ+ policies, like calling for the repeal of same-sex marriage and promoting a 'traditional family' of a mother, father, and kids. Meanwhile, neo-Nazi marches are becoming bolder, often filled with young men eager to intimidate.
'You automatically run a very, very high risk simply because of who you are,' says Bastian Finke, who runs MANEO, a Berlin group tracking anti-gay violence. 'To be attacked, to be insulted, to be spat on. We have these scenarios every day,' he told the Associated Press.
That fear lingers in the air, even in a city as vibrant as Berlin. This year's Christopher Street Day parade, one of the biggest Pride events around, felt bittersweet. The joy was there, but so was a quiet unease.
Still, for Danjel, the parade offers a rare moment of relief. 'It is very moving to feel completely accepted once a year,' he said.

A residence certificate was reportedly filed using his name at the Mohiuddin Nagar block office under the Patori subdivision in Bihar's Samastipur district. The investigation revealed that the card was being made through tampering. Information regarding this has been given to the cyber cell. An FIR will be lodged, and necessary action will be taken.' Congress leader Randeep Surjewala criticised the incident, linking it to the ongoing electoral roll revision in the state. In a post on X, he said, 'Many people will smile at this as a joke and move on, but just think about it... This is the biggest proof that the entire process of 'electoral roll revision' in Bihar is a fraud and a way to steal votes.' String of fake applications surfaces The Trump incident comes just days after a residence certificate was issued in the name of a stray dog 'Dog Babu'. The certificate, dated July 24, carried a photograph of the animal, whose parents were recorded as 'Kutta Babu' and 'Kutiya Devi'. ‘Kardashian gang' Beyoncé, JLo, and Lauren Sanchez accused of ‘naked racism' against white women; Megyn Kelly defends Sydney Sweeney as a ‘natural beauty'

Former Fox reporter Megyn Kelly called out a group of high-profile celebrities, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Lauren Sánchez, lumping them into the same bucket as Kim Kardashian, while backing Sydney Sweeney amid the backlash over her American Eagle jeans ad. The brand's wordplay on 'Genes' and 'Jeans' sparked backlash, with some claiming it hinted at Nazi propaganda. Days later, Levi's dropped an ad featuring Beyoncé, which many saw as a direct clapback. MAGA millennial Charlie Kirk teamed up with Kelly, defending Sweeney and accusing Beyoncé and others of promoting what they called 'unadulterated naked racism' against white women. Also read: 'Call Sydney Sweeney a fascist, and another 20-year-old comes in Trump's support': Charlie Kirk slams Beyoncé as 'artificial' over Levi's ad Kelly's remark came in defence of the Euphoria star, who has recently found herself the target of online criticism and allegations of glorifying white traits. In a recent podcast, Kelly claimed that the entertainment industry, particularly through figures like Beyoncé and the Kardashians, was trying to push an image of women and beauty that was hyper-curated, artificial, and exclusionary to individuals who do not fit a certain aesthetic. Taking a jab at Beyoncé's Levi's campaign, calling it another example of how 'manufactured beauty' was used as a weapon to marginalise natural femininity. 'She's a completely artificial creation—made by Jay-Z, marketed and paid for by Jay-Z,' Kelly said of Beyoncé. According to Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, 'A blond white woman who isn't covered in tattoos or botched by surgery is so repulsive to them, it's like they think the Third Reich is making a comeback.' He continued, 'There's an energy behind this, a deep disgust that a white blonde girl can still be featured in an ad. They treat it like it's a step backwards for woke America. Let's call it what it is: naked, unfiltered racism against white women. We've seen it for years. We're done with it.' Also read: Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans ad isn't the real crisis. Our reaction to it is Kelly then praised Sweeney for her natural look, calling her 'an actual beauty,' in contrast to what she sees as the 'plastic presentation' often tied to pop culture representation. 'She hasn't been butchered into the place where, like again, the Kardashian gang, you know they have a whole team of people that are that are constantly and Beyonce's in that same category. Beyonce's in that category. JLo's in that category. Lauren Sanchez is in that category,' Kelly said. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter just teased her Cowboy Carter era with a bedazzled denim drop for Levi's, titled The Denim Cowboy. The ad, released two days ago, has her shooting pool, riding a motorcycle, and lowkey promoting her upcoming album Act III. While the internet hailed her as untouchable power, some pointed out the double standard: Beyoncé gets a pass for cultural appropriation here, but Sydney Sweeney never would. 'Hard to recognise, but this is Beyoncé, with straightened blonde hair and visibly lightened skin. If Sydney Sweeney did an ad in braids, the world would melt down,' wrote John LeFevre. Oli London added, 'Beyoncé appears in a Levi's ad, no liberal outrage. Sydney Sweeney shows up in an American Eagle campaign, massive liberal outrage. Why is that?' Meanwhile, the only ones cashing in on the Sydney vs. Beyoncé noise are political players squeezing out free promo. Washington Examiner contributor Kimberly Ross called out the circus: 'What if I said Sydney Sweeney has good genes, Beyoncé has good genes, and flipping out about either is stupid? Move on from these inane discussions. Good lord.'

Siddaramaiah government to play it safe on Scheduled Castes internal quotas

BENGALURU: The Justice HN Nagamohan Das Commission report on internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) is likely to be placed before the Siddaramaiah cabinet on Thursday. Since the report could stoke controversy, the cabinet is likely to play it safe by appointing a cabinet sub-committee to study it and file a report for implementation of the quota, according to sources. 'The CM will share copies of the 1,766-page report among cabinet colleagues and suggest they study it and return for a discussion at the next cabinet meeting,' a source said. It is learnt that the commission, in its quota matrix, formed five groups among the 101 SC castes and shared 17 per cent quota among them. It has recommended 6 per cent to SC-Left, 5 per cent to SC-Right, 4 per cent to Bhovi, Lambani, Koracha and Korama, 1 per cent to Adi Karnataka (AK), Adi Dravida (AD) and Adi Andhra (AA) castes, and 1 per cent to about 49 microscopic castes. During the previous BJP government, the Bommai cabinet had in March 2023, following the report of the cabinet sub-committee headed by JC Madhuswamy, recommended 6 per cent for SC-Left, 5.5 per cent for SC-Right, 4.5 per cent for Bhovi, Lambani, Koracha and Korama castes and 1 per cent for others.
