Daniel Carlson Breaks Silence on Giving up Jersey Number to Ashton Jeanty
Daniel Carlson Breaks Silence on Giving up Jersey Number to Ashton Jeanty originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
After averaging a league-worst 79.8 yards per game on the ground last year, the Las Vegas Raiders splurged on running back Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Jeanty, who ran for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024, was nicknamed "Deuce" while at Boise State because he wore No. 2 on his jersey. Unfortunately, that number belonged to Raiders' All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson when he was drafted.
However, Carlson ultimately gave up the uniform number to the rookie shortly after the draft. Jeanty admitted on an episode of Up & Adams that he paid a hefty price to buy the number off the veteran.

Carlson recently broke his silence on the matter, however, when he spoke to the media on Tuesday. He talked about his initial impressions of Jeanty and how the negotiation process went.

"I mean, just a high character guy, so it was really easy," Carlson said. "I wouldn't even call it a negotiation necessarily. Just a couple discussions, you know, it was super great. And I mean, everything I've seen on the field so far, I'm no expert, but he looks the part for sure."
When one reporter tried to figure out exactly how much Jeanty sent him, Carlson had a tongue and cheek response.
"No, no new cars," Carlson laughed.
Carlson is looking to rebound this season after making just 85.0% of his field goals in 2024, which was his lowest mark since his second year in 2019. He earned back-to-back All-Pro honors in 2021 and 2022, but he has not reached that level in two years.

Perhaps his changing back to the No. 8 will rejuvenate Carlson and allow him to leave the 2024 season in the past. Jeanty, by that same token, will be looking to give new life to the No. 2 in 2025.

Florida Gators Land Blue-Chip WR
Florida Gators Land Blue-Chip WR originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Billy Napier earned the commitment of Buchholz (Fla.)'s Justin Williams on Sunday, bolstering the Florida Gators' future receiving room. Advertisement "BREAKING: Four-Star WR Justin Williams has Committed to Florida, he tells me for @on3recruits," Hayes Fawcett wrote Sunday on X. "The 6'0 190 WR from Gainesville, FL chose the Gators over Florida State, Kentucky, Missouri, & Indiana. 'From the Backyard to The Swamp #GoGators." Williams is listed as the No. 15 overall athlete in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. "New-age offensive weapon that was a full-time wide receiver, but has since made the transition to running back and will likely get a bulk of his snaps there moving forward as he's a rhythmic mover with excellent contact balance that can string cuts together and extend runs," 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote in a scouting report. Florida Gators coach Billy Napier© Brianna Paciorka/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images "Should be viewed as a do-it-all utility man that can make an impact in a variety of different ways at the Power Four level. "Likely to find most success in a single-back spread attack that wants to target him out of the backfield." Advertisement Williams was a finalist for Florida's Class 6A Mr. Football award. He was chosen as The Gainesville Sun's All-Area Big School Offensive Player of the Year after catching 85 passes for 1,473 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 108 more times for 1,023 yards and 16 touchdowns. Williams had also visited the Indiana Hoosiers recently. If he sticks to his pledge, he'll follow a class of wideouts that includes Vernell Brown III, Dallas Wilson, and Naeshaun Montgomery. Alabama to Host Five-Star Shooting Guard on Tuesday
Alabama to Host Five-Star Shooting Guard on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide under head coach Nate Oats have been a top ranked team in college basketball over recent years. Advertisement His ability to coach, recruit, and develop the young men on his rosters translates to deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, and the goal of cutting down the nets to close the season. Falling short in the Elite Eight this past season to the Duke Blue Devils, the Tide are looking to bounce back in 2025, and hope to make it to the final weekend. On Tuesday, Oats and the staff are hosting five-star shooting guard Caleb Holt for an unofficial visit. Holt is the No. 5 overall recruit in the 2026 recruiting class. Alabama head coach Nate Oats celebrates a play against Connecticut during the Final Four semifinal game at State Farm Stadium.© Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK Holt would be an incredible add to the Tide, and would put them ahead in the SEC's recruiting rankings, as there has yet to be a five-star commit in the 2026 window. Advertisement They certainly have their work cut out for him to acquire Holt. While being in his home state in Alabama, they will likely be fighting other top SEC schools in their pursuit of him, as the Auburn Tigers have expressed interest in the young guard. Among the two Alabama schools, Ole Miss has emerged as a potential landing spot for Holt, and is the only school to have a visit completed with him. Now he will be able to add Alabama as a team to have completed a visit with him, and while it is an unofficial one, will be able to develop a relationship with the staff as they continue to determine how good a fit would be between the two. With plenty of time until his commitment will take place, Alabama can look ahead to the 2025 season, as they have the No. 4 overall recruiting class in the country, including the best in the SEC.
