Toyota Is Bringing Back Even More Vintage Parts
Owners of old cars know how hard it can be to find parts. Sure, cross-compatible parts like wheels and suspension components will likely always be around, but what about headlights? Interior trim? Wiring harnesses? Owners of old Toyotas have long collected solutions to this issue for some components, but now the Gazoo Racing Heritage Parts line is adding more options for the AE86, Land Cruiser, and Supra.
Gazoo Racing is adding 14 new parts to its library this year, with the first newly-produced parts hitting dealers this month. "The project reproduces spare parts that have been discontinued and sells them as genuine parts," Toyota's racing division said in a statement, "in order to support customers who wish to continue driving older vehicles that are full of memories and that they truly love."
Some are relatively universal parts, but others are white whales that would otherwise be truly difficult to track down -- and equally hard to live without. As Hagerty puts it:
While some pieces like oil pressure gauges for 60- and 70-series Land Cruisers and fuel gauges for 70- and 80-series Land Cruisers could be replaced with aftermarket pieces, other parts, like the A80 Supra rear speed sensor, are harder to work around.

For the AE86, the latest added parts from Gazoo include one of the most frustrating things to DIY: Wiring harnesses. Toyota has reintroduced engine bay harnesses for the 4AG engine in the AE86 chassis, which is a godsend to anyone who's faced down the concept of making a whole new harness by themselves. The parts even include diagrams and instructions on how to install them, ensuring that every fiddly little connector actually goes where it's meant to.

Wiring is often one of the most frustrating parts of an engine swap, but having brand new factory harnesses to chop up can simplify things immensely. Bringing back old parts doesn't just make it easier to keep old cars on the road -- it makes it simpler to modify old cars the way their original owners might have.

The Toyota 4Runner Could Get a New Off-Road Companion Soon
Toyota's off-road SUV is hard to beat. That probably won't stop an unexpected brand from trying. Rugged, reliable and downright cool — it's easy to see why the Toyota 4Runner remains one of the most lust-worthy off-road SUVs in the US. But it may have some competition on the way, and not from a manufacturer drivers typically associate with dirt trails and rocky paths. After unveiling the Tacoma-like Tasman in 2024, Kia has all but confirmed it's working on a truck-based SUV. And it could arrive in just a few years. At a recent media event in Australia, Kia engineer Graeme Gambold unexpectedly told CarSales that the company was targeting a Tasman-like SUV 'three years down the track.' According to the report from that event, Dean Norbiato, one of Kia's marketing chiefs, then quickly interjected, clarifying that Kia would be focused on the Tasman before expanding upon the premise of an off-road lifestyle vehicle ready to take it to Toyota. As we know, the Tasman features a body-on-frame chassis, paired with a double wishbone suspension and rigid rear axle with leaf springs. It can also handle up to 32 inches of water, thanks to the position of its air intake inside the truck's front fender. It also boasts an impressive towing capacity of 7,716 pounds (more than the Jeep Gladiator). Should it come to pass, it's reasonable to expect similar specs on the SUV variant. However, one key point may prevent it from knocking the 4Runner off its perch. The Tasman isn't available in the US, and Kia's CEO recently confirmed it won't be coming for the foreseeable future. Let's hope the brand changes its position by the end of the decade. After all, if the roads aren't wide enough to share, there should be plenty of room off of them. Subaru BRAT Revival May Disappoint Fans Of The Original
The Subaru BRAT was a light-duty pickup sold in the United States between 1978 and 1987, and it's set to make a comeback for the modern era. The BRAT name stands for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter, which tells you all you need to know about this compact but capable pickup. Also known as the Brumby in other markets, CarsGuide is reporting an all-electric return of the BRAT. That may not be what truck fans want to hear, but any Subaru pickup is better than none at all, right? The new BRAT is expected to share components with a Toyota pickup, a Maverick-sized compact truck previewed by the Toyota EPU concept back in 2023. The brands already have a close relationship, with models like the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ developed in tandem, so this is no great surprise. Earlier this year, Toyota confirmed the arrival of its electric pickup, which gives us confidence that a Subaru twin will get the green light, too. The original Subaru BRAT was a simple two-seater pickup, and if the new one follows that route, it will be the only compact truck of its kind. The only other compact trucks in the USA, the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz, are both two-row, five-seater models. Under the skin, it's safe to expect standard all-wheel drive for the new BRAT, while it could make 375 horsepower. There's no need for that much power in a compact pickup, though - even 100 hp less should make for quite a performer. Either way, it will be a world apart from the original BRAT model's 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Ford broke the mold when it launched the Maverick with an available hybrid powertrain. Returning 38 mpg combined, it's the most efficient pickup truck in America, and the all-electric BRAT would be even cheaper to run over the same distance. While electric pickups suffer in the towing and hauling categories alongside gas or hybrid models, a compact pickup wouldn't need to be as much of a hardcore hauler, so an electric option in this segment would potentially be less of a compromise. An all-electric powertrain would also introduce a level of refinement not before seen in the compact pickup segment. Even if the BRAT does make a successful return, there's no telling if it would be sold in the United States.
