Girl faces financial hurdles for higher edu

1 2 Berhampur: A 20-year-old girl from a remote village in Gajapati district, who passed Plus II (Arts) with over 77% marks, is worried about her admission to Plus III. Parents of Sibani Gouda of Bebir village in Aliganda panchayat cannot provide money for her higher studies. And only two days are left to apply online for Plus III admissions. Admission fees for Plus III (Arts) differ from college to college. While it is Rs 1,800 in govt colleges, it varies from Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 in aided colleges, depending on the development fees. Private colleges collect up to Rs 20,000, sources said. While her father and mother work as daily-wage labourers in Cuttack, her 17-year-old brother suffers from a mental disorder and is undergoing treatment in Cuttack. Sibani stays in her uncle's house in the village. Sibani had been forced to drop one year after the HSC examination in 2022 due to financial constraints. "She applied to take admission for Plus II in a private college in Cuttack. But dropped out, as we could not arrange the money," said Saheb Gouda, her father. She took admission in a private school in Adava in 2023 with borrowed money, he said. The financial assistance (Rs 5,000) her mother received under the state govt's Subhadra Yojana helped her to take admission in Plus II (second year). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "I requested the principal to give some time to repay the admission fee last year. The college authorities allowed it. I cleared the admission fees of Rs 8,500 after my mother received the first installment of Subhadra Yojana in September and borrowed the rest," said Sibani. Her father said his daughter is very ken on studies. "I can manage the admission fees, but there are other expenses for her studies and I cannot provide it," he said. Regional education director, Berhampur, Sidharth Shankar Padhy said they would not allow any student to discontinue their studies due to financial problems. "We will ask the nearby college principal to approach the student and ensure her admission in Plus III," he said.

Gold ETF AUM rise in Gujarat over soaring prices, low jewellery demand

Ahmedabad: Physical gold demand took a backseat over the past 3-4 months due to soaring international prices and subdued jewellery demand. As a result, investors in Gujarat are increasingly turning to digital gold. This shift has pushed the state's Gold Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) assets under management (AUM) up by over 27% in the first four months of 2025. Data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) revealed that Gold ETF AUM in Gujarat grew from Rs 681.53 crore on Jan 1 to Rs 867.49 crore on April 30. The increase was steady month-on-month, with April alone seeing a jump in AUM to Rs 867.49 crore, from Rs 828.51 crore in March. According to industry experts, gold is certainly becoming an important asset class in investor portfolios given its gains over the past few years. "In merely five years, the returns on gold doubled, as a result of which many investors are turning to the digital form of the yellow metal, which enables them the flexible option of low-cost investment without having to worry about safety," said a city-based financial advisor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Gold prices in the Ahmedabad market settled at Rs 99,500 per 10g on Monday. Bullion industry players attribute this rise to a growing investor preference for gold as a financial asset rather than an ornamental one. Haresh Acharya, director, India Bullion and Jewellers' Association (IBJA), said, "Ongoing geopolitical tensions have driven gold and silver prices sharply upward, prompting a clear shift in investor behaviour. With gold prices consistently hovering above $3,300 per ounce, traditional retail demand has softened. More investors are now opting for Gold ETFs as the digital route offers ease of transaction, need for less compliance, and easy liquidity. The market is moving in tandem with global cues, and this trend is likely to continue as long as price volatility persists." Gold ETFs, which offer transparency, liquidity, and no storage hassles, have gained traction among urban investors, particularly in Gujarat's major cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, and Rajkot. Market participants note that ETFs allow retail and institutional investors to take exposure to gold price movement without the need to deal with making charges or purity concerns. Safe & secure: Another 3,100 km in SCR zone to come under Kavach

Hyderabad: Train operations in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are set to become safer as the govt has decided to extend the Kavach network to cover 70% of the South Central Railway (SCR) zone. This state-of-the-art anti-train collision system has already been deployed along 1,465 kilometres of track on the Ankai-Nanded-Dharmabad-Nizamabad-Secunderabad-Kurnool City-Dhone-Guntakal, Parbhani-Parli Vaijnath-Latur Road-Bidar-Vikarabad, and Wadi-Vikarabad-Sanathnagar lines. Now, the govt has proposed rolling out Kavach on an additional 3,100 route km. The SCR has a 6,500 km rail network, 1,400 km of which are already operational with Kavach. Tenders have been issued to extend Kavach coverage to an additional 1,615 km on the high-density Balharshah-Kazipet-Vijayawada, Vijayawada-Gudur, Vijayawada-Duvvada, and Wadi-Guntakal-Yerraguntla-Renigunta sections, with the govt now sanctioning an additional 1,483 route km for Kavach coverage. Kavach 4.0 "Kavach 4.0 is sanctioned for 4,655 route km over SCR. Kavach migration from Ver 3.2 to Ver 4.0 is completed, and trials are in progress in the Sanathnagar-Vikarabad section. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Kavach field trials are also in progress in the Moula Ali-Raghunathpalli section of the Secunderabad division. At present, 202 locomotives, 136 stations, and 16 level crossing gates are equipped with Kavach," said a senior official in SCR. Kavach provides protection by preventing trains from passing the signal at danger (SPAD) and preventing collisions. It automatically activates the train braking system if the driver fails to control the train in accordance with the speed restrictions. In addition, it prevents collisions between two trains or locomotives equipped with a functioning Kavach system. No accidents since 2020 There have been no major train accidents in Telangana since 2020. The region's most recent significant train accident occurred at Kacheguda Railway Station in 2019, when the Lingampalli-Falaknuma MMTS collided with the Kurnool-Secunderabad Hundry Intercity Express. The incident resulted in 15 passengers being injured and a loco pilot losing his life. According to railway officials, Kavach requires meticulous attention to detail and a significant amount of time to complete. This involves setting up various components along the tracks and on locomotives. Communication towers must be erected and GPS systems integrated into the infrastructure. Radio interfaces also need to be installed at stations, intermediate block signals and mid-section interlocked level crossings to ensure complete signal coverage.
