Boss tries to cancel employee's pre-approved leave, says her bonus is at risk

India Today5 days ago

A manager's attempt to cancel an employee's leave and force her to work on her day off didn't sit well with the internet, and neither did his threat to slash her bonus for refusing. It all happened through a text conversation between the unnamed boss and a woman who had pre-approved leave for the day. Screenshots of their exchange were shared by UK-based workplace expert Ben Askins in a post on Instagram. Askins blurred out the names, but the internet still didn't hold back.advertisementThe issue began when the boss casually texted the employee, saying, 'Hey, Jasper won't be coming in today so you'll need to handle the presentation.'
The woman pushed back politely, reminding him that her day off had already been cleared. 'Sorry, I can't. I've got today booked off for plans with the kids. I'll be back on Monday,' she responded. But the boss wasn't having it. 'It wasn't really a request TBH. I need you in by 11am,' he replied. That's when the conversation turned tense. The employee stood her ground and pointed out that she'd been working overtime for weeks and was well within her rights to take the day off. The manager doubled down.'One day isn't too much to ask. I can revoke your day off and expect you in at 11 am,' he said.advertisementWhen she said it didn't feel fair, especially since another colleague was reportedly at brunch—the boss snapped back, 'Not going to lie. I decide what is fair. We will have a conversation about our commitment when you're in today. If you're not here, it is coming out of your bonus.'The exchange didn't go down well. Several users slammed the manager's behaviour in the comments section of the post.Take a look at the post here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ben Askins (@benaskins.official)A section of the internet questioned why the woman even responded in the first place. 'The first text message should not have been responded to. It is that simple,' a user said, while another added, 'I'm confused why people are even responding on days off. Any work devices get turned off and any sent to private gets ignored.'Others rallied behind the employee and urged her to take it up with HR.See the comments here:While the boss may have thought he was asserting authority, the internet felt otherwise. The conversation sparked a larger debate on workplace boundaries, and users agreed on one thing: time off isn't optional, it's earned.

Nykaa shares drop despite strong Q4 performance

Nykaa parent FSN E-commerce saw shares decline in early trade as Indian market opened with losses on Monday. The counter opened 2 per cent lower at Rs 199 against the previous closing of Rs 203.26 on the BSE. It was trading at Rs 201.26 as of 9:53 am. The beauty and fashion retailer posted strong March quarter numbers last Friday, with nearly doubling to Rs 19 crore. The Mumbai-based company's operating revenue rose 23.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2,016.7 crore for the fourth quarter, up from Rs 1,667.9 crore, driven by customer acquisition, brand partnerships, and network expansion. The performance was in line with the company's guidance issued in April, when it projected consolidated net revenue growth in the low to mid-20 per cent range for the March quarter. However, on a sequential basis, Nykaa's Q4 profit declined 29.3 per cent from Rs 26.9 crore reported in the previous quarter. Nykaa's beauty vertical, which contributes over 90 per cent of the company's total revenue, posted a 24.7 per cent YoY increase to Rs 1,895 crore from Rs 1,519 crore. The fashion segment saw muted growth, rising 11 per cent to Rs 161 crore from Rs 145 crore, with gross merchandise value (GMV) growing 18 per cent year-on-year. For the full fiscal year, Nykaa reported a consolidated gross merchandise value (GMV) – total value of goods sold across its platforms – of Rs 15,604 crore, a 25 per cent increase from the previous year. Nykaa currently serves 42 million customers and operates 237 offline stores across India, offering products from over 8,600 brands. In FY25 alone, the company added around 50 stores — its highest annual addition to date. "While BPC segment continues to deliver healthy growth with better profitability, revival in fashion business remains a key monitorable, given the heightened competitive intensity across the industry," said brokerages house Nuvama in a note on Monday. Nuvama analysts continue to expect improvement in profitability on the back of lower losses in fashion and eB2B segment.

Instagram for iPad in Progress, Meta Gears Up for Late 2024 Launch

After years of anticipation, Meta appears to be finally answering the call of iPad users. Reports indicate that a native Instagram app tailored for the iPad is under active development, with a public release expected by the end of 2024. The news comes on the heels of Meta's recent launch of WhatsApp for iPad, surprising fans and fueling hopes for more tablet-optimised experiences. Now, Instagram seems to be the next major Meta-owned platform to make the leap, according to industry insiders. This development was first hinted at in April by The Information's Kaya Yurieff and Kalley Huang. More recently, Bloomberg's tech correspondent Mark Gurman confirmed that Meta employees are internally testing the iPad version. Gurman added, 'Unless there are major setbacks, it should be available to the public before the end of 2024.' Instagram's absence on the iPad has long puzzled users, especially given the platform's visual nature—designed for sharing photos, videos, and stories that are arguably best experienced on larger screens. For over a decade, iPad users have been left with the zoomed-in iPhone version of Instagram, which fails to fully utilise the iPad's expansive display. So, what took Meta so long? Experts point to both technical challenges and underlying tensions between Meta and Apple. Initially, Instagram was built around lower-resolution images, which often appeared pixelated on iPad's high-resolution display. But beyond the tech limitations, a frosty relationship between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple's Tim Cook may have also played a role. For years, the two tech giants have clashed publicly over issues like user privacy and App Store policies. Some believe that Meta's delay in releasing Instagram for iPad was, in part, a subtle form of pushback against Apple. That said, the tide now appears to be turning. With WhatsApp now officially on iPad, and Instagram supporting high-resolution media, widescreen videos, and long-form content, Meta seems ready to prioritise the user experience over past rivalries. Competition may also be a driving factor. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts already offer robust tablet support and continue to capture the attention of younger users. Meta likely sees the Instagram iPad app as essential for retaining engagement and expanding its user base. Internal efforts are reportedly in full swing. 'Meta employees are going full steam ahead,' says Gurman. The launch timeline remains subject to change, but the outlook appears optimistic. There's no confirmation yet on whether Meta's Threads app will also come to iPad, but for now, the promise of a native Instagram experience is big news for creators, casual users, and everyone who prefers editing or browsing on a bigger screen.
