Kota Tinggi police to conduct in-depth probe into UTM Palapes cadet's death

Malay Maila day ago
JOHOR BARU, Aug 1 — Police will conduct a thorough investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet, who died at the Kota Tinggi Hospital, said district police chief Superintendent Yusof Othman.
He said the investigation will include recording statements from witnesses and medical officers involved, as part of efforts to identify the cause of the incident.
'The victim's body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Department at Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI) here for investigation procedures.
'The autopsy did not detect any criminal injuries, and the cause of death is still pending the results of a laboratory report.
'The case has been classified as a sudden death and is being investigated by a Kota Tinggi district police investigating officer,' he said in a statement today.
Yusof was responding to the death of Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student at UTM. He was undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) here from June 27 to August 3.
Yusof said police received a report on the cadet's death at 5.33pm on July 28.
Initial investigations revealed that the victim experienced a seizure and lost control during Combat Inoculation Training at 2.30pm on the same day.
'Upon realising the situation, the victim was taken to Kota Tinggi Hospital by a medical officer but was confirmed dead while being treated at the hospital's emergency zone,' he said.
Yusof advised the public not to speculate while investigations are ongoing.
Earlier, Syamsul Haris' mother demanded an immediate investigation into her son's death during training.
In a statement, UTM said it views the incident seriously and will leave the matter to the police to investigate. The university also pledged full cooperation throughout the investigation process.
'UTM expresses its deep sorrow over the passing of the late Syamsul Haris. We extend our condolences to his family and pray that his soul rests in peace and is placed among the faithful.
'At the same time, the university has contacted the deceased's next of kin and is ready to provide all necessary assistance and support.
'UTM remains committed to prioritising the safety and welfare of its students,' the statement read.
Earlier, the deceased's mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, claimed at a press conference in Ipoh, Perak, that her son's cause of death was unclear and suspicious.
The 45-year-old single mother said an examination of her son's body during the autopsy revealed severe injuries, which she said did not match the initial explanation that his death was caused by a seizure.

UTM Palapes cadet death investigation to ensure justice for all

SUNGAI SIPUT: The investigation into last Monday's death of a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officer Training Unit (PALAPES) cadet during training will be conducted comprehensively to ensure justice for all parties involved, including the victim's family, the university, and higher education institutions. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said the ministry is committed to reviewing all aspects of the incident, particularly issues relating to participant safety and health. 'All relevant factors will be scrutinised to identify areas for improvement and ensure there will be no negligence in the future,' he told reporters after opening the Sungai Siput Veteran Desa MADANI (VDM) programme here today. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced that the ministry had established a special committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the cadet's death, which occurred during training at the Ulu Tiram Army Combat Training Centre (PULADA). Meanwhile, Adly said the ministry would also fully cooperate with the police in the official investigation being conducted. He emphasised that the ministry takes the matter seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct, including bullying, injuries caused by negligence, or any criminal elements, if proven to have occurred. 'The Ministry of Defence will not compromise on any form of bullying if it is found to have taken place. 'Anyone found guilty of an offence will face disciplinary action from the ministry and, at the same time, be subject to legal action by the relevant authorities,' he said. Adly also stressed the ministry's commitment to prioritising participants' health in all military training programmes, highlighting the importance of transparent and accurate health assessments. 'The health status of every participant is crucial, and we must ensure no medical information is concealed. Military training is physically demanding, and that's why thorough health screenings are necessary. 'For instance, in the former National Service Training Programme (PLKN), participants who did not meet the health criteria were sent home. We do not want individuals with health concerns to be put at unnecessary risk,' he explained. - Bernama

Four 13-year-olds released on bail after alleged attack on classmate at Kajang mall

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — Four 13-year-old students detained over the alleged assault of a classmate at a shopping mall in Kajang have been released on police bail today. Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said the remand for the suspects, which was initially extended until tomorrow, was concluded earlier following the completion of documentation and investigative procedures. 'To date, police have recorded statements from nine individuals, including the four students,' he said in a statement. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was triggered by dissatisfaction among the suspects with the victim's manner of communication and interaction. On July 30, the Form One student lodged a police report alleging classmates beat him at about 11 am at the mall. He later received medical treatment and was confirmed to have sustained minor facial injuries. The case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation, as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. — Bernama

IGP: Don't derail Zara Qairina probe with 3R speculation

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 2 — All negative comments regarding the student bullying case in Sabah that could cause anxiety and touch on 3R (Race, Religion, Royalty) issues should cease immediately. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail stated that sufficient space must be given to the police to complete their investigation fully. 'I call upon all parties to give space to the police to continue the investigation,' he said. 'Negative comments and public perceptions linking this to 3R issues sometimes make it difficult for us to resolve the investigation and so on.' 'Therefore, I call on the relevant parties to refrain from making negative comments, comments that could create a bad atmosphere or anxiety by linking certain parties, politics, and also the palace to this issue, which I feel should be stopped,' he stressed. Commenting further on the bullying case involving the death of a student from Sipitang, the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, on July 17, Mohd Khalid informed that so far, statements have been recorded from 60 witnesses, including students, staff and teachers. 'So, we have obtained many things, much information, and the investigation papers have been completed and submitted to the Criminal Investigation Department at Bukit Aman. We will then bring them to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) for further action,' he explained. Mohd Khalid, who was met by the media after paying a courtesy call on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sabah Tun Musa Aman on Saturday, said the visit aimed to discuss security and stability issues in Sabah. 'We discussed security and stability issues in the state of Sabah.' 'The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is always open to ensuring the political stability and security of Sabah remain peaceful for all its people.' 'The Sabah Police Commissioner is also always giving his best to ensure Sabah's security, not only concerning domestic issues but also international issues, especially our waters shared with neighbouring states, the Philippines, and also claims by China and other countries. 'So far, we are in a win-win situation, discussing well and thoroughly so that everything can be resolved amicably,' he revealed. Accompanying him at Istana Seri Kinabalu was Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun. This visit coincided with his maiden trip to Sabah since being appointed as the Inspector-General of Police on June 23. — The Borneo Post
