24 grams of fentanyl seized during police raid in Orangeville
A used needle is spotted laying on the ground - file image. (CTV News) An Orangeville resident is facing charges after police officers seized 24 grams of fentanyl while conducting a search warrant on Wednesday. Police say officers with the OPP Street Crime Unit and the Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement team, along with Dufferin B Platoon, executed three bench warrants on an Orangeville resident, resulting in an arrest. A 39-year-old man is charged with drug trafficking and failing to comply with a probation order. Fentanyl Facts The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and 40 times stronger than heroin. Individuals are urged to have a naloxone kit available if using drugs in case of an emergency and call 911 in the event of a possible overdose. 'A very small amount of fentanyl or fentanyl analogues can lead to an overdose/poisoning and possible death,' the health unit's website states, adding fentanyl is impossible to see, smell or taste when mixed with other drugs. According to Health Canada, more than 7,000 apparent opioid-related deaths were recorded in 2024, with most - 80 per cent - having happened in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Of those, 74 per cent involved fentanyl.

Two arrested after laser strike on Saskatoon police aircraft
Two people were arrested early Thursday morning after allegedly targeting the Saskatoon police airplane with a green light laser. At around 12:30 a.m., patrol officers were alerted by the air support unit that they had been struck by the laser while airborne, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said in a news release. ADVERTISEMENT Following a second laser strike, it was determined to be coming from a balcony in the 500 block of Eastlake Avenue, police said. Police responded and arrested the suspects, finding a green light laser inside the apartment. Police say laser strikes pose significant risks to aviation safety, as they can illuminate the plane's interior and cause temporary vision loss for the pilots and crew, which could result in loss of control of the aircraft. Both suspects, a 36-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, have been charged with assaulting a police officer and mischief causing danger to life. Police say the man was also found to be breaching court-ordered conditions.

Vancouver police ask public for help finding man wanted Canada-wide
Wanted man Penh "Chad" You is seen in this image shared by the Vancouver Police Department. (VPD) Vancouver police are asking the public for help locating a man wanted Canada-wide for 'multiple firearms offences.' The Vancouver Police Department said in a news release Thursday that it has been investigating 38-year-old Penh 'Chad' You since April 2023, when officers received a report that You had 'threatened a woman with a firearm during a verbal dispute.' ADVERTISEMENT You also made 'several other threatening statements' during the incident, police said. As part of their investigation, police executed search warrants at multiple residences linked to You, seizing 11 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition during their searches. In March of this year, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada approved six charges against You, all of them firearms related. Those charges are possessing a firearm without a licence, possessing an unauthorized firearm, possessing a firearm at an unauthorized place, possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, failing to report a lost or stolen firearm and contravening Firearms Act regulations. Asked why police were issuing a public appeal for information on You's whereabouts now, five months after the charges were laid, VPD spokesperson Tania Visintin told CTV News in an email that 'other investigative steps were taken to try and find You before releasing his image.' 'Those attempts were unsuccessful, so we are now turning to the public for help,' Visintin said. The wanted man stands 6′ tall, weighs 170 pounds and has a medium build, police said in their release, adding that he has short black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call investigators at 604-717-0603, police said.
