'I watched it over and over,' Yin says. 'Every time the blade cut through, the sound made me get a sense of comfort, like a surge of energy that opened my pores, zipping through my body.'

Alibaba's Taobao debuts multi-tier loyalty scheme offering shopping discounts, hotel perks
Alibaba Group Holding 's online marketplace Taobao has launched a new membership system that integrates various services from the firm's other apps, aiming to create synergies and drive growth across the company's expansive ecosystem. The loyalty programme, free of charge, offers users a range of benefits from Taobao, on-demand delivery service online travel agency Fliggy, grocery chain Freshippo, and online mapping and ride-hailing service Amap. It was open to about 1 billion users on Taobao and sister shopping platform Tmall, the company said on Wednesday. The move confirms a report by the Post on Tuesday that Alibaba was planning a new membership programme spanning multiple services. Alibaba owns the Post. Each Taobao user is assigned a tier based on their past activities on the platform, along with corresponding benefits, according to the company. Members in the highest tier, black diamond, are eligible for at least 14 benefits, including an additional 20 per cent discount on select products on Taobao and Tmall, as well as premium membership on Fliggy that confers gold status at 31 lodging chains, including Marriott International and Hilton Hotels and Resorts.

‘No kill switches and back doors': Nvidia reasserts security of its AI chips in blog post
Semiconductor giant Nvidia reasserted the security of its AI processors in a blog post on Tuesday, pointing out that inserting weaknesses into chips would 'undermine global digital infrastructure and fracture trust in US technology'. 'There are no back doors in Nvidia chips. No kill switches. No spyware,' the post said. 'That's not how trustworthy systems are built – and never will be.' According to the post written by Nvidia chief security officer David Reber Jnr, graphics processing units (GPUs) from the company, which has been designing chips for more than 30 years, are 'used across industries – from healthcare and finance to scientific research, autonomous systems and AI infrastructure'. 'Embedding back doors and kill switches into chips would be a gift to hackers and hostile actors,' the post said. 'Established law wisely requires companies to fix vulnerabilities – not create them.' Nvidia's blog post reiterated the company's strong denial of alleged security risks in its H20 GPUs, which prompted the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) last week to conduct an inquiry into the company. 'Nvidia does not have 'back doors' in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them,' a company representative said in an email to the South China Morning Post, a day after the CAC summoned the US firm to discuss its security concerns.

Sit down, Spot: Robot dog from China's Unitree tops Boston Dynamics rival in payload
Unitree Robotics introduced a quadruped robot that can hold as much as 100kg, albeit only when stationary, as Chinese companies continue to challenge Western rivals on both price and performance. Called the A2, the robot dog can withstand an adult standing and even hopping on it, according to a video published by the company on social media on Tuesday. When in motion, the unit's payload falls to 25kg, but that outperforms rival four-legged robot Spot from US-based Boston Dynamics, which has a maximum payload of 14kg, according to specifications. Unitree said the A2 was suitable for 'logistics, industrial inspection and emergency rescue' in 'extreme and complex environments'. Constructed from aluminium alloy and high-strength engineering plastic, the machine was designed for demanding environments, Unitree said. In the video, the dog somersaults down stairs, hops on two legs, spins while supporting itself on one leg and rushes down steep slopes. The unit could operate for three hours when fully loaded, which could extend to five hours when unencumbered, Unitree said. Spot has an average runtime of one and a half hours and a standby time of three hours. Both models can operate in temperatures between minus 20 and 55 degrees Celsius, but the A2 can climb a slope of 45 degrees, better than Spot's maximum of 30 degrees.
