Major retailer promises ‘full refund' on every tent sold to discourage abandoners

Decathlon is encouraging campers and festival-goers to be more environmentally conscious with its "No Tent Left Behind" pledge.
The retailer will offer a full gift card refund for every tent returned this summer, aiming to reduce the number of abandoned tents.
The initiative expands on previous efforts and now includes every Decathlon brand tent across its Quechua and Simond ranges.
Customers who purchase any of these tents online or in-store between 9 June and 14 September can return them with proof of purchase before 14 September to receive the full purchase value back as a Decathlon gift card.
To participate, customers need to be Decathlon members when returning the tent. This initiative underscores Decathlon's commitment to sustainability and responsible camping, providing an incentive for customers to return and reuse their tents.
Decathlon said the pledge allowed more customers than ever before to make responsible choices that countered the significant environmental issue of abandoned tents.
A typical single-use tent contains as much plastic as 9,000 straws or 200 bottles.
It also said the pledge lowered the barrier to outdoor adventures, and encouraged the curious to invest in a tent for a camping experience safe in the knowledge they could return it at the end of the season if their needs changed.
Decathlon UK sustainability leader Chris Allen said: 'The evolution of the No Tent Left Behind promise reflects our deep commitment to circularity and listening to our customers.
'What started with one tent has grown into a commitment across our entire range, driven by the public's desire to make more responsible choices.
'By making it easy and rewarding to bring tents back, we're not only reducing waste across all camping activities, but also creating a vital supply chain for our Second Life programme, making quality outdoor gear accessible to even more people.
'This is about driving systemic change and changing camping culture for the better.'
Broadcaster Vick Hope, who is supporting this year's campaign, said: 'Whether you're dancing at Glasto, on a hilltop, or roasting marshmallows with family, your tent deserves more than one weekend of glory.
'Decathlon's pledge is brilliant because it simplifies doing the right thing.'
End-of-life tents from previous seasons have been repurposed and transformed into oversized flags bearing the message 'I'm not leaving my tent behind, you shouldn't either', and will appear across festivals and campsites.

The Chinese manufacturer BYD has launched its cheapest model in the UK, in the latest stage of its efforts to overtake Tesla as the world's biggest electric carmaker. The Dolphin Surf will start at £18,650, a price that puts it among the cheapest new vehicles on sale in Britain. BYD is vying with American rival Tesla, run by Elon Musk, for the crown of world's biggest battery carmaker, although BYD already beats Tesla when including figures for hybrid cars, which combine a battery with a petrol engine. The Chinese carmaker registered more pure electric cars than Tesla in Europe for the first time in April. Tesla just about remained the biggest seller of EVs globally in 2024. Tesla has since been hit by a backlash over Musk's role in Donald Trump's administration. Registrations for new Teslas in Europe halved in April compared with the same month a year earlier. Musk remains the world's richest man, worth more than $400bn (£295bn), according to Forbes. Electric cars are already much cheaper to own than their petrol equivalents for most people, but the arrival of smaller models with a comparable sticker price to fossil fuel cars is seen as important in persuading lower-income buyers. Analysts suggest that BYD has a lot of room to cut the price of the Dolphin Surf further. The company sells a near-identical model under the Seagull name in China for about £6,000, although Chinese safety regulations are significantly less onerous. The company's European growth has come despite the EU imposing 17.4% tariffs on BYD on the grounds of allegedly unfair state aid from China. In contrast, the UK has not added tariffs on Chinese electric cars, and has therefore been the biggest target market for Chinese brands. BYD sells through a network of dealerships across Britain. The UK accounted for 30% of all Chinese electric models sold in Europe in March, according to Matthias Schmidt, an electric vehicle analyst, with brands like Xpeng, Leapmotor and Jaecoo, owned by state-controlled Chery also trying to win market share. The Dolphin Surf has an official range of up to 137 miles, but also has some features that are generally found on more expensive models, such as a rotating touchscreen and driver assistance functions like intelligent cruise control and automatic emergency braking. BYD has taken a deliberate decision to offer much of the same technology on lower-end models as are found in its premium vehicles, in an effort to drive down the cost of sensors and software while maintaining its lead over rivals. The Surf uses BYD's Blade battery, which relies on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for its cathode. LFP batteries are made from cheaper materials than lithium batteries that use more expensive nickel, manganese and cobalt (NMC) – although the latter offer better performance such as longer range. While carmakers in Europe have until now mostly focused on NMC batteries to help assuage range anxiety among early adopters, LFP batteries have proved to be hugely popular among Chinese buyers looking for a cheaper upfront cost. More than 80% of electric cars sold in China in 2024 used LFP batteries, according to data cited by Kallanish Commodities, an industry news provider. BYD's main Chinese battery rival, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited (Catl), has also invested heavily in LFP technology in the race to dominate the global electric vehicle industry. Both companies are also competing to offer full recharging in minutes.

The company announced on Wednesday it is proposing to consolidate its UK operations at a single site in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The decision puts 400 jobs at risk at its facility in Falkirk in another blow to the Forth Valley, which has already seen more than 400 jobs go at the Grangemouth refinery this year. Speaking at First Minister's Questions on Thursday, John Swinney said he is 'deeply concerned'. He told the chamber: 'This issue has been occupying a great deal of the focus and the attention of the Deputy First Minister and I and the UK Government ministers since we became aware of the situation over the last few weeks, and then ultimately to the decision that was announced yesterday.' He said his Government has 'supported' the manufacturer. But Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar accused Holyrood ministers of overlooking Scottish industry in favour of ordering buses from China, while pointing to the order from Alexander Dennis of around 160 vehicles by the publicly-owned network in Greater Manchester. In Scotland, public service buses are procured by private operators, who then run them on routes across the country. Mr Swinney said state aid regulations – in the form of the UK-wide Subsidy Control Act – prevent the Government from directly procuring from a single supplier like Alexander Dennis. He quoted a joint letter from the UK and Scottish governments, which pledged to 'work closely with Alexander Dennis at this challenging time'. He added: 'That's us indicating that we're keen to do everything we can to find a way through the Subsidy Control Act provisions, so the Government can continue to operate within the law, which we must do, but also, we can support manufacturing in Scotland, which is my priority.' Responding, Mr Sarwar said: 'If John Swinney can't figure out a way to order buses in Scotland, I suggest he picks up the phone to (Greater Manchester Mayor) Andy Burnham and see how he managed to do it. 'Almost five times as many bus orders from Manchester.' Mr Sarwar's claim stems from the second phase of the Scottish Government's green bus initiative ScotZEB, which ordered 44 buses from Alexander Dennis. However, according to a press release from the time, 137 buses were ordered from the firm in the first phase, amounting to a total of 181. In a statement, Mr Burnham – who has visited the Falkirk site – said: 'Our iconic Bee Network buses are a bit of Scotland right here in Greater Manchester. 'We have over 160 Alexander Dennis buses criss-crossing our city-region every day – connecting our communities to opportunity. 'If Greater Manchester can invest in world-class Scottish bus manufacturing, then why can't the SNP Scottish Government?'
