How women can conquer endurance sports with female-specific training

When journalists Lily Canter, a contributor to the South China Morning Post, and Emma Wilkinson started running together in ultra races – ones that take six hours or more to finish – in 2020, they noticed that there were few women. Those women that did take part, though, did remarkably well.
When the pair started to look into it, they realised this was true for other endurance sports, too.
In their new book Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport, they delve into the science of sporting performance to explore the differences between the sexes.
They ask questions like: could fat stores and muscle type give women an edge over men in ultra distances? And what roles do pace, preparation and motherhood play?
Speaking to elite athletes and scientists, they reveal the largely unknown past of female endurance.
The book introduces poverty-stricken Greek mother Stamata Revithi, who sneaked into the 1896 Athens Olympics marathon; 1980s swimming pioneer Lynne Cox – who crossed the world's coldest oceans in just a swimsuit; and Jasmin Paris, a British veterinarian who ran almost non-stop to win a 268-mile (431km) mountain race, the 2019 Montane Winter Spine Race along the Pennine Way in the UK – while breastfeeding.

Will your child become obese as an adult? New tool identifies those genetically at risk

Scientists have developed a tool that can measure a child's risk of becoming obese in later life. This new resource may one day mean that those at highest risk will get targeted support to prevent them from becoming obese in the first place. The tool, which assesses a person's genetic risk of obesity , works twice as well as any other obesity risk predictor, academics said. As well as identifying children at risk, it can also predict how well obese adults will respond to targeted weight-loss programmes. Academics used data on the genetic variations from more than 5 million people to create a tool called a polygenic risk score, which analyses millions of DNA variations to predict a person's susceptibility to becoming overweight. The scientists found that the tool could successfully predict weight gain during childhood from the age of just two and a half. Photo: Shutterstock The tool could explain 17.6 per cent of the variation in the body mass index score (BMI) – calculated from a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in metres – from people in the UK, they found.

HK racing off-season update: David Probert joins the ranks as 2025-26 fixture list is revealed

Keagan de Melo was almost on target at Group One level over the weekend. Photo: Kenneth Chan. British jockey David Probert will join the Hong Kong talent pool next season after being confirmed on a part-season Club Jockey's licence. The 36-year-old's licence will run from July 17 to February 17 2026, both dates inclusive, and will join fellow British rider Richard Kingscote on the roster for next campaign. Probert, best known for his partnership with trainer Andrew Balding down the years, is yet to win a Group One race but has snared 12 races at Group Two level, most recently the Summer Mile Stakes (1,600m) at Ascot in July on Never So Brave for Balding. 'It's about improving myself as a rider and as a person, giving myself a little bit of space to see what I want to do moving forward. I want to achieve something I probably can't in the UK,' Probert told the Racing Post. Probert also filled out the same position on another roughie, 150-1 shot Hoo Ya Mal, in the 2022 Derby (2,400m) at Epsom. The race was won by Desert Crown, ridden by Kingscote for legendary trainer Sir Michael Stoute. His best season to date came in 2021, where he rode 169 winners from 1,236 rides. He has breached the century mark on eight occasions, including in the last four years. Illinois has big shoes to fill in the Goodwood Cup as iconic festival kicks off

Aidan O'Brien is hoping Illinois can fill the void left by star stayer Kyprios when he lines up in Tuesday's Group One Goodwood Cup (3,209m) as the iconic five-day racing festival gets under way. Last year's winner Kyprios, an eight-time Group One winner who won the Goodwood Cup on two occasions, was retired in May after aggravating an old injury, - leaving the staying throne up for grabs. Illinois was made favourite for the Group One Gold Cup (4,000m) at Royal Ascot following his retirement but could only finish second behind runaway winner Trawlerman. There is no Trawlerman in his way on this occasion and, dropped back in distance, he will get his chance for redemption and a maiden top-level success under Ryan Moore. TRAWLERMAN IS THE 2025 GOLD CUP HERO! #ROYALASCOT — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 19, 2025 The thing about Illinois is that he stays very well, but he's got a bit of class to go with it. We're happy with him; he's been doing everything right at home,' said O'Brien. 'He has a good mind, he's relaxed, he's big and he's hardy. Physically, he's done well.' He will face some stern opposition, however, with the main danger coming from the John and Thady Gosden-trained French Master. Owned by powerhouse Wathnan Racing, the four-year-old gelding posted a career-best effort when running away with the Copper Horse Stakes (2,800m) at Royal Ascot last month. He is on a sharp upwards trajectory and Wathnan Racing's manager Richard Brown is hoping to learn more about him. IT'S WATHNAN AGAIN! FRENCH MASTER WINS THE COPPER HORSE STAKES! #RoyalAscot — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) June 17, 2025 'I saw French Master at John and Thady Gosden's yard recently and he seems to have come out of his Ascot race in great condition,' said Brown. 'You had to be impressed with that performance. He's stepping up from a handicap to a Group 1 race but we're going to pitch him in the Goodwood Cup and see where we are.' Other dangers include Scandinavia, a wide-margin Group Three winner for O'Brien earlier this month, and the reliable Gosden-trained Sweet William, who has only finished outside the top three in one of his 17 career starts. 'It was a tough race and in the end it was a little too far for him, but he ran a brave race. He's in very good form. Robert Havlin rides him every day and he's very pleased with him,' said John Gosden of Sweet William. All eight races from the first day of Goodwood will be simulcast, with a pair of Group Two races headlining a stacked undercard. The Group Two Vintage Stakes (1,400m) features a plethora of exciting younger horses, with the O'Brien-trained Dorset set to go off favourite. He improved from a debut second to run riot in a maiden at the Curragh last month and the second has boosted the form subsequently. Humidity made it two wins from two with a dominant performance in the Listed Chesham Stakes (1,400m) at Royal Ascot and heads up the dangers alongside Zavateri, who also made it two from two when causing a boilover in the Group Two July Stakes at Newmarket this month. The Group Two HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (1,400m) is a wide-open affair, with last year's winner Audience and the 2021 and 2023 hero Kinross towards the top of the market. Golden Eagle (1,400m) winner Lake Forest, top level-placed Jonquil, and Group Three Jersey Stakes (1,400m) winner Noble Champion are other big chances.
