Former U's midfielder hit with suspension after breaching betting rules
FORMER Colchester United midfielder Neil Danns has been given a six-month suspension and £1,000 fine for breaching FA betting rules.
The newly-appointed Southport manager, who won promotion with the U's in 2006, is suspended until the end of the 2025-26 season after it was alleged he breached FA rules 65 times by placing bets on football matches between February 17, 2007 and August 13, 2022.

The six-month ban is suspended until the end of the 2025-26 season.
The bets were placed while Danns was at other clubs and he admitted the charges against him.

The 42-year-old was recently appointed as Southport boss, joining the National League North club in May this year having spent two years as assistant manager at Tranmere.
Danns made 85 league and cup appearances for Colchester after joining them from Blackburn Rovers in December 2004, initially on loan.
He left the U's to join Birmingham City, in the summer of 2006.

Leader of 'cult-like' UK Christian group guilty of sexually abusing women
By Sam Tobin LONDON (Reuters) -The leader of a "cult-like" Christian group once backed by the Church of England has been convicted of sexually abusing nine women in his congregation, after a jury returned their final verdicts on Thursday. Chris Brain, 68, led the Nine O'Clock Service, an evangelical church movement based in Sheffield, northern England, in the 1980s and 1990s. The group's nightclub-style services, which were held at 9 p.m. on Sundays, were aimed at young people, featured a live band and attracted hundreds of people at its peak. But, prosecutors said, Brain controlled members of the congregation, cutting them off from family and friends, and abused his position to sexually assault "a staggering number of women". Brain also had a "homebase team" of young women who looked after him, his wife and daughter at their house in Sheffield, who were dubbed "the lycra nuns", prosecutor Tim Clark said. He was charged with 36 counts of indecent assault and one count of rape relating to 13 women between 1981 and 1995. He denied the charges and said any sexual contact was consensual. After a trial at the Inner London Crown Court, Brain was convicted on Wednesday of 17 charges of indecent assault relating to nine women. He was acquitted of a further 15 counts. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on the remaining four counts of indecent assault and the alleged rape, Britain's Crown Prosecution Service said on Thursday, adding it would "carefully consider" a retrial. 'FAILING OF THE CHURCH' The Nine O'Clock Service had the blessing of the Church of England. Prosecutors said in 1990 that the Archbishop of Canterbury-elect, George Carey, had met Brain to discuss his methods. Brain's ordination was fast-tracked and the Nine O'Clock Service spent "large sums of money" to obtain the outfit worn by actor Robert De Niro for the 1986 film 'The Mission' for the ceremony, prosecutors said. But Brain resigned and left the church days before the broadcast of a 1995 BBC documentary, which accused him of sexually inappropriate behaviour. Carey said he was "crushed and let down" when the allegations were made public. In his evidence, Brain said he received massages from members of the Nine O'Clock Service, which he said occasionally moved towards sexual activity. He also denied controlling or manipulating members of the congregation. "What happened was an appalling abuse of power and leadership that should never have occurred," Bishop of Sheffield Pete Wilcox said in a statement. "Where concerns were raised in the past and were not acted upon properly, that was a failing of the Church. For those institutional failures I offer an unreserved apology." Palace's Eze on verge of Arsenal move as he misses European tie
Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze appeared to be moving closer to a transfer to Arsenal worth a reported £60 million ($81 million) after the England international was left out of the Eagles' team for their European tie on Thursday. Sean Strickland handed 6-month suspension for Las Vegas in-cage attack
Repercussions have been handed to Sean Strickland following his in-cage altercation with a regional fighter at a Tuff-N-Uff event in Las Vegas in June. In a hearing Thursday, the Nevada Athletic Commission agreed to a punishment of a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine, plus legal fees. The suspension is retroactive to the incident date, which was June 29, meaning Strickland will be eligible to fight again on Dec. 29. Strickland can have the suspension reduced to four and a half months if he completes anger management classes. "Sean Strickland stepped forward. He made this process easy," NAC chairman Dallas Haun said. "He's apologized for his behavior. We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something, and for a resolution to be come to quickly and with all parties in agreement. So, again, thanks to Mr. Strickland. He's made a mistake and he's owned it and we appreciate that." The altercation occurred at the end of a middleweight bout between Luis Hernandez and Miles Hunsinger. After Hernandez submitted Strickland's teammate Hunsinger with a guillotine in Round 2, he began taunting Hunsinger's corner, which led to the former UFC middleweight champion storming the cage to throw punches at Hernandez. UFC welterweight Chris Curtis, Strickland and Hunsinger's teammate, also got involved in the skirmish and was fined $2,500 on Thursday. For the 34-year-old Strickland, this suspension effectively kills the rest of his 2025 fight career unless his suspension is reduced. He last fought in a losing effort when he rematched the now-former champion Dricus du Plessis in February. Strickland's last victory came via a split decision over Paulo Costa in June 2024.
