– French swimmer Leon Marchand has a clear objective for his World Aquatics Championships campaign in Singapore next week.
In a bid to break the 200m medley world record, the 23-year-old will be skipping two of the four events which he won at the 2024 Olympics, his club president in Toulouse announced on July 21.
Marchand was one of the standout stars of the Paris Games where he claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke and 200m butterfly, as well the 200m and 400m individual medleys.
However, he is now set to focus purely on the medley events.
'He won't be doing the 200m butterfly and 200m breaststroke,' Michel Coloma of the Dauphins du TOEC club told AFP.
'He wants to see what happens in the 200m medley, without having any other races on his plate.'
Nicolas Castel, Marchand's coach at Dauphins, told Franceinfo Sport: 'It's a choice we made because we're in a post-Olympic year, and he's never had the opportunity to perform a 200m medley without having a race before or after the same day.
'He wanted to try this isolated 200m medley and see what he is capable of. Now, the main idea is to test this race without anything around it.'
Marchand is already the world record holder for the 400m medley, having snatched it from American legend Michael Phelps in 2023, but he now wants a crack at Ryan Lochte's 2011 record of 1min 54.00sec for the 200m medley.
He came close in his Olympic final, which he won in 1:54.06, setting a Games record in the process.
In a warmup event ahead of the world meet, he clocked 1:57.23 to come home first at the Indy Summer Cup in Indianapolis on June 28, with Hungary's Hubert Kos second in 2:00.16.
Marchand will begin his world championship campaign on July 30 when the 200m medley heats take place at the WCH Arena, with the final the next day.

Greek masterclass sees off Hungary 12-9 to clinch women's water polo title at World Aquatics C'ships

SINGAPORE – Spurred on by a section of loud supporters at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on July 23, Greece put on a masterclass to defeat Hungary 12-9 in the women's water polo final of the World Aquatics Championships (WCH). The win gave the Greeks their second world championship title, having won it for the first time in China in 2011. The two sides had met in the Women's Water Polo World Cup final in April, where Greece were also victorious in China, winning 13-9. The teams also faced each other in the group stage here in Singapore and Hungary had edged out their rivals 10-9 on July 11. In the final on July 23, Greece opened the scoring through tournament top scorer Foteini Tricha (25 goals including a hat-trick in the final) and despite Natasa Rybanska's equaliser, goals from Eleni Xenaki and captain Eleftheria Plevritou helped the Greek to finish the first quarter 3-1 up. It was all Greece in the second period as Xenaki completed her hat-trick, with the Hungarians struggling to find the net after several saves from Greek custodian Ioanna Stamatopoulou, as the teams headed into the half at 8-4. Despite a late Hungarian comeback in the third (2-2) and fourth (3-2) periods, Greece managed to see out the match 12-9. In the earlier bronze-medal match, world No. 1 Spain survived a late scare to pip third-ranked United States 13-12. Inspired by Emma Lineback, who scored a game-high five goals, eight-time world champions US clawed back a 7-4 first-half deficit but ran out of time against the Olympic champions. Spain's captain Anni Espar said that her team were nervous throughout their bronze-medal match against the United States. ST PHOTO: GIN TAY Said Spain captain Anni Espar: 'I think (we were) nervous the whole game, America played a great game, but we were able to perform really well and we're able to control the game even when things weren't working as well as the beginning. 'I think maybe at the end we needed to be a little bit more on top of the left-hander (Lineback) that was scoring a lot of goals, so I think that's something we can improve for next time.' When asked about the disappointment of finishing fourth, both in Singapore and at the Paris Olympics in 2024 – the Americans had won the 2024 world championships in Doha – US coach Adam Krikorian said: 'We did a great job here, to be honest. 'What we were able to accomplish over a long period of time... it was a lot of hard work and lessons learnt, and that processes are going to be really important for this young group. 'We have so many young players that are experiencing this for the first time, and have a long way to grow. 'Clearly, we're not at the level of the best teams in the world right now, but at least we know much better now, after this summer, kind of where we stand and what we need to work on.' Meanwhile, in the seventh-place play-off, Italy beat Japan 20-15, while world No. 2 Netherlands defeated Olympic silver medallists Australia 13-11 to finish fifth.

Activists protest over Gaza during Tour de France, call for Israeli team to be barred

DIEULEFIT, France - Dozens of pro-Palestinian activists waved flags and unfurled banners on Wednesday as the Tour de France peloton rode through Dieulefit, a southeastern French town honoured as a "Town of the Just" for sheltering Jewish people during World War Two. A house was draped with Palestinian flags and protesters waved dozens more by the roadside. Cries of "Free Palestine" echoed through the town, as the riders cycled through. One banner read "Affamer c'est tuer", meaning "Starving is killing". Vanessa Huguenin, who runs a family-owned department store in Dieulefit, a town of about 3,000 people, said the action had been planned for nearly two months to take advantage of the Tour's visibility. 'We can't change Israel or Hamas, but we want our government to act, not just say 'it's not good'," she said. Such protests about international politics are relatively rare in the three-week annual race, in which fans line the route as the riders tackle daily stages. A small protest over the war in Gaza occurred during the first stage of last year's edition. A man was also arrested last Wednesday in Toulouse after running onto the final straight of the stage wearing a T-shirt reading "Israel out of the Tour" and waving a black and white keffiyeh headdress. Through a loudspeaker on Wednesday, a protester shouted: 'Mr Adams, spokesperson for a genocidal army," referring to Sylvan Adams, co-owner of the Israel-Premier Tech cycling team competing in the race. The protester called for the team to be kicked out. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. "Israel-Premier Tech respects everyone's right to free speech which includes the right to protest," said a statement from Israel-Premier Tech, which is Israel's first elite cycling team, founded in 2014. "Our focus is on racing and we continue to work closely with race organisers and relevant parties to ensure that any protests do not jeopardise team members' safety, nor impact races, or our right to participate." The team have been granted extra security on the Tour, with police officers by the team bus and they were escorted by plain-clothed officers at the team's presentation in Lille. 'PROTECTING EVERYONE' Huguenin, 45, said the town's history inspired residents to act and said the protest had been peaceful. 'Here we say no one is a stranger. My grandparents hid people during the war. For us, being 'just' means protecting everyone, regardless of race or religion,' she said. The war between Israel and Hamas has been raging for nearly two years since the Palestinian militant group killed some 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages from southern Israel in the deadliest attack in Israel's history, Israeli tallies show. Israel has since killed nearly 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza, Gaza's health ministry says. It has decimated Hamas as a military force, reduced most of the territory to ruins and forced nearly the entire population to flee their homes multiple times. The man arrested last Wednesday said he was due to stand trial for endangering the riders and refusing to give his fingerprints. He says the security officer who tackled him threw his walkie-talkie at him. Race organisers Amaury Sports Organisation declined to comment about either protest. REUTERS

Hollywood executive Peter Rice named head of ceremonies for 2028 Olympics

LOS ANGELES :Organisers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics have named TV and film executive Peter Rice as head of ceremonies and content, marking the first time a major Hollywood figure will oversee the creative production of the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies. Rice, who has had senior leadership experience with 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company, will serve as lead executive producer for both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies in Los Angeles. "Our ceremonies will capture the energy, innovation and creativity of Los Angeles as well as the emotion that exists at the heart of every Olympic Games," Rice told Reuters in an interview. "The challenge is to welcome the world in a way that's not only memorable, but truly representative of LA's unique spirit - a city that stands at the crossroads of creativity, sports, and art." The British American producer will shape the creative vision and oversee production of all four ceremonies at two iconic venues: the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the newly built SoFi Stadium. He said his experience with global sporting events like the Super Bowl, World Series, and FIFA World Cup has prepared him for the task, and emphasized that assembling a world-class production team was his top priority. "We need people with deep Olympic experience who can also tap into LA's creativity and energy," he said, adding that the selection of a production company is expected by year's end. LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman expressed enthusiasm for Rice's appointment, citing their 25-year friendship and Rice's unique blend of business, technical, financial and creative skills. "I knew he was our number one draft pick," Wasserman said. Rice, whose projects have earned 51 Academy Award and 293 Emmy nominations, hopes the ceremonies reflect Southern California's spirit of optimism. "It's a place where people go to pursue their dreams, and the Olympics are all about people's dreams," he said. The LA Games open on July 14, 2028, with the Paralympic Games following in August. It will be the first time Los Angeles has hosted a Paralympics.
