Dagupan siblings win gold at int'l math olympiad
Two young math whizzes from Dagupan City brought pride to the Philippines after winning top awards at the Horizon Olympiad Global Round held in New York, USA. The event was held from July 21 to 26, 2025. Purple Faith Aquino and Citrine Neo Aquino, from Mother Goose Special Science High School, led the Philippine delegation to victory. Purple Faith emerged as the Top 1 Ultimate Winner and a gold awardee in her category, while Citrine Neo also bagged a gold medal. 'It feels incredible because this is the first time we've done this. I love winning first try. It's the best thing ever,' Purple Faith said. 'Oh, it was amazing and I'm proud to be one of the pioneers. The Horizon gave us a lot of fun,' Citrine Neo added. For Purple Faith, the trip was extra special as it was her first time competing abroad and making new friends from different countries. Their mother, Winnie Bautista-Aquino, said the family was both proud and surprised at the results. 'Grateful, of course. Overwhelming kasi we did not expect it,' she said. Winnie said the competition also offered scholarship opportunities at a university in Brooklyn. The sibling's victory not only showcases their talent but also shines light to the potential of Filipino students to excel on the global stage. Truly, small but terrible and worth the nation's pride.

Gilas Pilipinas to meet Australia again seven years after infamous FIBA brawl
Gilas Pilipinas and Australia are on a collision course again, seven years after their controversial brawl at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan. Gilas and the Boomers will duke it out in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday with the latter out to keep their bid for a third consecutive gold medal alive while the Filipinos are seeking to pull off a major upset. "We know that they are the pretty much the number one seed in the tournament and for us to beat them is gonna be an upset," Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone on the heels of their 95-88 win against Saudi Arabia early Tuesday. The Philippines and Australia have faced off five times in FIBA tournaments, most recently during the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers here in the Philippines—a game overshadowed by a bench-clearing brawl. Australia would run away with victory by default, 89-53, after the Philippines was left with only three players in June Mar Fajardo, Gabe Norwood, and Baser Amer, and they committed intentional fouls to get disqualified. CJ Perez taken to hospital after injury in Gilas' OT win vs Saudi Arabia
Gilas Pilipinas' 95-88 overtime triumph over Saudi Arabia came at a costly price as CJ Perez was taken to the hospital following an apparent ankle injury during the qualification to quarterfinals clash in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup early Tuesday. The veteran guard looked to have hurt his right ankle while going for a loose ball at the 5:52 mark of the second quarter, further adding to Gilas' personnel woes with Calvin Oftana already sitting out the game due to his own ankle injury. "The only bad part about all this is the injury to CJ. Looks like it's a bad injury. He's in the hospital now," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said. "We don't know the extent of it but it didn't look good. I'm not gonna pretend to be a doctor and tell you what it is, but it was not a good injury so our prayers are with him." Missing two of their stalwarts, the Filipinos still withstood a gallant effort from the hosts, though it took an extra five minutes to get the job done. Brownlee finished with 29 points, none bigger than his cold-blooded three over a smaller defender that tied the game at 79 and forced an extra period. The naturalized player also grabbed four rebounds, five assists, and one block to star in the epic 95-88 victory that sent the Philippines to the quarterfinals against Australia. But Gilas showed it's more than just one man's game. Kevin Quiambao proved he belongs after the 24-year-old wingman posted 17 points, including two triples in the overtime, while AJ Edu churned out a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Dwight Ramos flirted with a double-double after collecting 13 markers and nine rebounds as June Mar Fajardo chimed in with six markers, two rebounds, and four assists. "But I'm just proud of our guys, we didn't quit. We had some leads that we gave up but they didn't quit either, that's what it was an epic game," Cone added.
