Trade talks between India-US still ongoing, ‘tech, trade & talent' future of ties, says MEA
In this regard, Goyal met Lutnick twice in the six days between 17 and 23 May.
At a regular press briefing, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'The India-US trade agreement negotiations are going on. We just had a team visiting the United States. So we will have to wait for the negotiations to come to a conclusion. And as we have an update, we will share it with you. But this is an ongoing matter, so you will have to bear with us.'
New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs Thursday said trade negotiations between India and the US were still ongoing even as an Indian team led by Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal recently met with his American counterpart, Howard Lutnick, twice in a week.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump first announced the India-US trade negotiations towards a deal during Modi's visit to Washington, DC, in February this year. Since then, multiple rounds of talks have been held.
The deal has become increasingly crucial to India-US relations ahead of the 8 July 8 deadline for Trump's 'reciprocal trade tariffs' to kick in.
Indian exporters are likely to face some of the highest tariffs, as India maintains a goods trade surplus of around $30 billion with the US. Trump has also increasingly pushed for American businesses to build in the US, calling on Apple a few weeks ago to stop producing goods in India for the domestic market.
Separately, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has been in the US between 27 and 29 May.
On Wednesday, he met with Jeffrey Kessler, the US undersecretary, to 'advance cooperation' in critical and emerging technologies.
'He [Misri] also led our delegation comprising the Deputy NSA for the inter-agency discussions on India-US COMPACT for the 21st century. This meeting happened in the White House, discussions at the White House, and it focused on implementing the trust initiatives, which again is about critical minerals and critical and emerging technology partnerships,' Jaiswal said.
The inter-agency discussions also touched upon cooperation in areas of defence and energy, as well as strengthening various multilateral initiatives such as the Quad, IMEC and I2U2. Misri also met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.
'They discussed all aspects of the India-U.S. relationship. In particular, they agreed that technology, tech, trade and talent will shape the India-US partnership in the 21st century, and they both reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India-U.S. comprehensive global strategic partnership,' said Jaiswal.
On student visas & India-Pak cessation of hostilities
On the issue of student visas, Jaiswal said, 'While we note that issuance of visas is a sovereign function, we hope that the application of Indian students will be considered on merit and they will be able to join their academic programmes on time.'
Media reports this week have said that the US State Department has halted the visa interview process for students as it institutes a procedure to vet applicants' social media presence. Indians make up one of the largest student communities in the US with roughly 330,000 students in the US for the year 2023-2024, according to MEA data.
The MEA spokesperson also reiterated that no talks on trade had been held between officials of India and the US during Operation Sindoor. This came hours after the US government told a court Wednesday that it had used the offer of expanding trade and the threat of tariffs to bring a 'ceasefire' in the flare-up between India and Pakistan earlier this month.
'From the time Operation Sindoor commenced on 7th May till the understanding on cessation of firing and military action on 10th May, there were conversations between Indian and US leaders on the evolving military situation. The issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions,' said Jaiswal.
India has previously denied that the US played a role in the cessation of hostilities, maintaining that it was a bilateral understanding, arrived at by the militaries of India and Pakistan.

Macron touts 'positive new' Asia-Europe alliance amid US-China rivalry
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on European and Asian nations to work together to build a "positive new alliance" to avoid being dragged into the growing rivalry between the US and China. Addressing the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Macron singled out the China-US rivalry as the biggest risk confronting the world. France's longstanding goal for Europe's strategic autonomy is also relevant for Asian countries, which share many of the same interests and can combine forces with like-minded European partners as they seek a third way, Macron said in the speech on Friday. The time for non-alignment has undoubtedly passed, but the time for coalitions of action has come and requires that countries capable of acting together give themselves every means to do so, Macron said in his keynote address. Let's build a positive new alliance between Europe and Asia, based on our common norms, on our common principles. Our shared responsibility is to ensure with others that our countries are not collateral victims of the imbalances linked to the choices made by the superpowers, the leader of Europe's second-largest economy added. We have a challenge of revisionist countries that want to impose under the name of spheres of influence in reality, spheres of coercion; countries that want to control areas from the fringe of Europe to the archipelagos in the South China Sea, at the exclusion of regional partners, oblivious to international law, Macron said. Macron pointed out that France is an Indo-Pacific nation as seven of its offshore territories sit in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, with a million French citizens living in this region. Macron said that the unpredictability of Trump's tariff approach that ended a rule-based order for our trade constitutes a common threat to Europe and Asia, affecting these nations' ability to finance their defence, requiring their greater cohesion. France is a friend and an ally of the United States, and is a friendand we do cooperate if sometimes we disagree and competewith China, he said. We don't want to be instructed on a daily basis what is allowed, what is not allowed, and how our life will change because of the decision of a single person. The dialogue also included US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and defence and security leaders from around the world. Hegseth, meanwhile, asked Asian countries to increase their defence spending to match levels that Washington expects of European allies. It is hard to believe I can say this but Asian allies and partners should look to countries in Europe as a new-found example. NATO members are pledging to spend 5 per cent of their GDP on defence, even Germany, he said. Hegseth had communicated to European allies this expectation at the Munich Security Conference in February. How can it make sense for countries in Europe to do that while key allies and partners in Asia spend far less in the face of a far more formidable threat from Communist China, not to mention North Korea? he asked. The global forum is being skipped by China by not sending its Defence Minister. Defence experts and diplomatic sources said the absence of a Chinese Ministerial representation at the Singapore Dialogue is being felt as China had last year and on several other occasions traded strong words with the US delegates. Hegseth underlined, Ultimately, a strong, resolute, and capable network of allies and partners is our key strategic advantage. China envies what we have together. President Donald Trump has been calling on US allies to bear a greater responsibility for their conventional defences, telling the nations in the South China region not to expect the US to bear the financial burden alone for regional stability and security. For a generation, the US ignored the Indo-Pacific, but under the Trump administration, we are here to stay, Hegseth said.

Security forces engage in encounter with Maoists in Jharkhand's Jhariakela
The security forces engaged in an encounter with members of the banned Maoist organisation CPI (Maoist) at around 12 p.m. on May 30. The encounter occurred in the hilly/forest areas of Vangram Tirilposi under Jhariakela Police Station in Jharkhand, a press release said. During the encounter, seeing the security forces gaining an upper hand, the Maoists fled from the incident spot by taking advantage of the forests and mountains. Explosives and other daily-use items were recovered and seized by the security forces during the search operation. Recently, the Indian forces conducted a major anti-Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur, eliminating 27 Maoists, which included top commander Basavaraju. Basavaraju, the general secretary of CPI (Maoist), has been involved in Maoist activities for the past 40-45 years and has been involved in more than 200 Maoist activities. Meanwhile, Maoist activity in Bastar and many regions of India has 'reduced significantly' as a result of carrying out operations against the banned and 'illegal' CPI-M outfit, a police official said on Wednesday (May 28, 2025). Inspector General (IG) of police, Bastar, P. Sundarraj told ANI, 'As a result of carrying out operations against the banned and illegal CPI-M outfit, Maoist activity in Bastar and many regions of India has reduced significantly... 4 districts of Bastar sub-division, Bijapur, Sukma, Narayanpur, and Kanker were identified as the most affected LWE districts... 6 districts of Chhattisgarh, including Bastar, Dhamtari, and Rajnandgaon, will be specially monitored by us for any kind of resurgence'. The IG stated that most of the districts in Chhattisgarh are seeing a drop in Maoist activity. 'In the country, only 18 districts are Maoist-affected, and 28 districts are included in the list of districts of maximum thrust... District of maximum thrust means that Maoist activity in the district has reduced to a great extent, but strict observations are still required... Most of the districts in Chhattisgarh are seeing a drop in maoist activity...,' he said.

American Eagle Outfitters reports bigger-than-expected loss, forecasts downbeat revenue
HighlightsAmerican Eagle Outfitters reported a wider-than-expected quarterly loss, leading to an 8% decline in shares, as rising input costs and sluggish demand impact their revenue forecast. The company expects second-quarter revenue to decline by 5%, exceeding analysts' estimates of a 4.04% drop, amid consumer financial constraints affecting non-essential purchases. Despite American Eagle Outfitters' struggles, Abercrombie & Fitch reported positive results, driven by strong demand for its Hollister brand among younger shoppers. American Eagle Outfitters forecast second-quarter revenue below estimates after reporting a wider-than-expected quarterly loss on Thursday, due to rising input costs and sluggish demand. Shares of the company, which withdrew its fiscal 2025 forecasts earlier this month amid tariff uncertainty, fell about 8% after the bell. Consumers grappling with financial constraints are avoiding non-essential purchases, including apparel and accessories, which in turn has hurt demand for clothing brands such as American Eagle Outfitters. Comparable sales in the company's American Eagle brand declined 2%, while those for its Aerie brand dropped 4%, compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, fears of a surge in product prices, sparked by U.S. President Trump's unpredictable tariff shifts, have rattled businesses and consumers worldwide. Peer Abercrombie & Fitch, however, reported an upbeat quarter, driven by robust demand for its Hollister brand among younger shoppers. American Eagle Outfitters now expects second-quarter revenue to decline by 5%, compared with analysts' estimates of a 4.04% drop, according to data compiled by LSEG. Total inventory as of the quarter ended May 3 fell 5% to $645 million, with unit numbers also down 5%. The owner of the Aerie brand, which took a $75 million inventory charge on its spring and summer collection, saw further margin pressure from increased in-season discounts and advertising expenses. Its quarterly gross margin dropped to 29.6% from 40.6% a year ago. The company reported a quarterly adjusted loss of 29 cents per share, versus analysts' estimates of a loss of 22 cents per share.
