Host more international events to boost Sibu's sports tourism, says Bukit Assek rep
SIBU (July 30): More international events should be held here to promote sports tourism in Sibu, said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
He said sports not only brings people together but can help showcase what Sibu has to offer to the world.
'Every visitor becomes an ambassador – sharing Sibu's charm and stories when they return home,' he said at the opening ceremony of the Sarawak International Volleyball Invitational 2025 at Rajang Park Indoor Volleyball Stadium on Tuesday night.
A total of 13 teams are taking part in the week-long championship. The teams are six men's teams from Thailand, Hong Kong, Johor, Miri, Sarawak Senior and Sarawak Junior and seven women's teams including two from Thailand, Mongolia, Taipei, Sarawak Senior, Sarawak Junior and Johor.
Chieng said the presence of these international teams will transform the event into a true international gathering united by the love for volleyball.
'Tonight's tournament is more than just about volleyball competition. It symbolises friendship, cultural exchange, and the chance to learn from each other.'
Chieng hoped all the guests, athletes and supporters would take some time to explore Sibu, a town known for its rich cultural diversity and warm hospitality.
'Sibu is often described as the 'Heartland of Sarawak's Culture', where you can experience the unique blend of Chinese, Malay, Iban, and Melanau traditions.
'I warmly encourage everyone to discover our local cuisine, from the famous 'kampua mee' and 'kompia' to freshly prepared Sibu-style 'dian bian hu' and our local tropical fruits.
'Beyond food, Sibu offers beautiful places such as the Sibu Central Market, the iconic Tua Pek Kong Temple, and the Rajang River, which is the longest river in Malaysia,' he said.
Chieng also thanked the organisers for linking this tournament with the preparations for the Malaysia Games (Sukma) next year.
'This reflects our long-term commitment to developing sports excellence and nurturing new talent.'

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's young squash talents, Gabriel Chia Yong He and Adryel Levi Limus Faurillo, made impressive runs at the Beijing Junior Squash Open 2025, held from July 24–28 at the Beijing Squash Centre, China. Representing the Prestige Squash Club, Gabriel competed in the boys' Under-15 category while Adryel took part in the boys' Under-13. Both players showcased determination and skill, advancing to the finals before narrowly falling to their respective Chinese opponents. They each earned silver medals for their efforts. Club secretary Mohd Nizam Ali Hasan, in a statement on Thursday, praised the duo for their exceptional performances. 'Both players delivered outstanding performances to reach the finals in their categories. They played hard-fought matches against top Chinese opponents on their home turf and finished as worthy runners-up,' he said. He added that their achievements reflect the players' talent, discipline, and development — a proud moment for Sabah squash. Mohd Nizam also expressed gratitude to the club's coaches, parents, and supporters for their continued dedication to nurturing junior squash players in the state. The Beijing tournament was the club's second international outing in July, following their participation in the 8th Borneo Junior Open Squash Championship 2025, held from July 15–20 at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Kuching. In Kuching, the club fielded 23 players. Among the notable performers were Euodia Lai, who finished sixth in the girls' Under-19 category, and Jedidiah Kwan, who placed eighth in the boys' Under-17. Pearly-Thinaah stay grounded despite world No. 2 ranking
Hoping to do better: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah reached the quarter-finals of the World Championships in Denmark in 2023. PETALING JAYA: A world No. 2 ranking may look good on paper, but shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are not buying into the hype just yet. Instead, the women's doubles pair Pearly-Thinaah are keeping their feet on the ground, insisting that being ranked No. 2 in the world offers no real advantage heading into the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31. Usually, a high world ranking often comes with the benefit of a favourable draw, helping players avoid other top seeds in the early rounds. However, Pearly-Thinaah believe this offers no guarantees, as many strong pairs are still in the mix despite their career-high world ranking. Their main focus is to maintain consistent performances in every tournament and continue supporting each other, both on and off the court. 'I think for us, being world No. 2 is just a number. What matters most is keeping our game more and more consistent and always supporting each other throughout the match,' said Thinaah. 'There are also many other strong players. It's not about avoiding top opponents, at this level, everyone is on par. 'So yes, we're happy to be ranked No. 2, I won't deny that, but our main focus right now is definitely to keep improving our consistency. 'I think recently we've been doing well in supporting each other, whether we win or lose, whether we're leading or trailing. 'We're always communicating, discussing things, and finding solutions together. I believe that's the most important thing,' said Thinaah. Pearly-Thinaah made their World Championships debut in the 2021 edition in Huelva, Spain, where they only managed to reach the second round. A year later in Tokyo, they improved on that result by progressing to the third round before falling to Japan's Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida. Their best showing came in the 2023 edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, where they reached the quarter-finals before going down to China's Zhang Shuxian-Zheng Yu. With hopes of doing better this year, Pearly-Thinaah have been working hard to improve on their weaknesses, particularly if they are drawn to face top pairs such as world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu–Tan Ning or Shida-Matsuyama again. For the record, the Chinese pair have won nine of their 12 encounters against Pearly-Thinaah, including their most recent clash at the Japan Open finals last month. 'Their game is very aggressive and they constantly put us under pressure,' said Thinaah. 'That's something we're trying to learn from them, and we're still working on improving our weaknesses ahead of the upcoming tournaments.'
