Malaysia launches data-driven border security index for enhanced safety
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail announced the initiative, developed by the Malaysian Institute of Public Safety (IPSOM) in collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).
The index provides a data-driven evaluation of the performance, effectiveness, and readiness of border enforcement agencies. Saifuddin highlighted its uniqueness, stating, 'What makes this index unique is that it draws on credible data from 31 agencies responsible for border security, not just the police and immigration.'
The system operates on a centralised cloud platform, allowing agencies to submit data twice a year based on 58 specific indicators.
The aggregated data forms the basis of the IKSN's annual assessment.
The index uses a five-tier scoring scale, with 0.0 – 1.0 indicating 'Very Safe' and 4.1 – 5.0 classified as 'Unsafe.'
Twelve cross-border threats have been identified, including illegal immigration, human trafficking, and drug smuggling.
Saifuddin noted, 'Kidnapping for ransom and sea robbery currently score 0.00, indicating very high security, while firearms smuggling is at 0.22, still within the 'Very Safe' range.'
The IKSN will aid in strategic decision-making for resource deployment, risk zone identification, and budget justifications.
Saifuddin added, 'With reliable data, we can determine where to position resources, what manpower is needed, and which agencies should be tasked.'

ALOR SETAR, July 28 — The Ministry of Transport is calling on the public to make full use of the stage bus service introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, which is being rolled out in phases this year. Minister Anthony Loke said the government has allocated substantial funding to support this initiative, particularly in urban areas where the service is in operation. 'To convince the Finance Ministry to continue providing allocations to us, I need to show data and performance — that this service truly benefits the people. 'If the public doesn't use this service despite the affordable fares and convenience offered, we will struggle to justify further funding for its expansion,' Loke told reporters after launching the Kota Setar service today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is also the co-chairman of the Kedah State Development Action Council, and Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani. Loke said that the federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years, or RM15.7 million annually, to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. The Kota Setar service, which began operations in stages on June 1, has recorded approximately 30,000 users monthly, with numbers expected to reach 40,000 by the end of this month. 'We hope more people will use it. The cost to the government is fixed at RM15.7 million a year for Kedah, regardless of how many passengers use the service. 'The more passengers we have, the lower the average cost per passenger, making the government's investment more worthwhile,' the minister remarked. On a separate note, Loke addressed the recent fatal accident involving a bus in Kota Sarang Semut, saying the matter is under police investigation. The ministry will assist with technical investigations, but whether the driver was negligent or will face charges is up to the police to determine, he said. 'Of course, all bus operators are required to adhere to strict safety regulations, including speed limits and mandatory driver training programmes,' he added. — Bernama

Saifuddin challenges PN to suggest better policies
PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan next week will be the opposition's best chance to show their capability as an alternative bloc. PETALING JAYA : Pakatan Harapan secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has challenged the opposition to propose better policies than those being implemented by the government, downplaying the Turun Anwar rally organised by PAS Youth yesterday. Saifuddin said the Madani government has taken several measures to alleviate the burden of the rising cost of living on the people, including increasing the amount of cash aid. Now, it is time for the opposition to show what alternative policies they have in mind, he said, according to Berita Harian. 'If you disagree with the government's policies, show us the welfare policies you have in mind,' he said. 'If you think the reduction of the price of RON95 petrol by six sen isn't enough, tell us how much you would reduce it by and through what mechanism; let the people compare. 'We have our policies and programmes, but they simply resort to insults and political sentiments. We reject such gutter politics.' Saifuddin said the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan next week would be the opposition's best chance to show their capability as an alternative bloc. 'The people want to know the ideas and policies they offer, not just shouting on the streets. So, showcase your policies in Parliament, let the people evaluate them,' he said. Saifuddin, the home minister, also criticised the Turun Anwar rally's organisers after some participants brought their children with them. He pointed out that this was not permitted under the Peaceful Assembly Act, and blamed PAS Youth for not giving rally-goers a clear reminder on this.
